If grass doesn't grow why are the greens still cut during the winter? It just grows much more slowly in the winter, and recovers quickly when you reach springtime.

Regular maintenance is always required - it actually improves the soil if divots are filled on a regular basis.

Memberships are expensive enough without playing toy golf for six months.

Can understand it on wet inland courses, but links really?

Would resign if my club went to mats. But you obviously really love it

It improves the soil...:rofl:what about the grass you all love playing off.

Six months on mats, you really don't have a clue.

What makes it obvious that I love playing of mats?

My point about loving golf clubs and their stupid rules was laced with sarcasm.

Are you seriously saying that Kilspindie gets played more than the Old Course at St Andrews, even given the fact it is closed 52 days of the year?? ??

Yes, a few divots. As pointed out, divots on a Links course tend to be small and are quick to recover.

Yes!

I wonder what the annual rounds at Kilspindie are?

45,000 at the Old course.

Be interesting to find out?

Find out please.

Ok I don't have a clue - winter months in golf -October - March = 6 months for those of us with even a minimum of arithmetic ability (your excluded:thumbsup:).

Grass grows out of soil, improve the soil improve the quality of grass quite simple really.Yes its terrible at my course not a blade of grass because of divots, walking about in rolled mud its terrible.:rofl:

You must love playing from mats - your laborious defense suggests a lover of the mat.

So every day the Old course is open (313) even in the winter, it ships 143 tee off times a day...bollocks!

Taken from the Links trust website

Quick Facts

  • Golf has been played at St Andrews Links for 600 years. In 1552 Archbishop Hamilton’s Charter recognised the right of the people of St Andrews to play golf at the Links.

  • St Andrews Links takes up almost 300 hectares and The Castle Course almost 90 hectares.

  • More than 230,000 rounds of golf are played on the seven courses each year with around 45,000 being played on the Old Course alone.

I think you have categorically proved that the only person speaking BOLLOCKS is your good self.

Away and have a wee lie down and dream of playing on mats:rofl:

Wrong again!!

I am sure there is more than 1 player per time.

I am sure they pretty much insist on 4 balls which is approx 35 tee times per day.

Reasonable ???

It's generally accepted that you can knock your ball into the first cut when mats are in operation is it not?

Kilspindie probably a bit too expensive though, £75 a round they have advertised on their website. Reckon I might try get to Gullane if the weather is decent. £46 for #2 and £33 for #3.

Gullane No. 2 is on great condition.. greens are brilliant..

Well if that's true, its pretty sad of you to be on this page, and to be attempting to pass yourself off as a golfer?????

Have you really nothing better to do?

Probably don't support Hearts either I would guess.

Pumpherston for as long as I remember played off mats in winter.

Due to dropping membership mainly, it was dropped this winter.

Is the course suffering? No.

I regularly go and play St Michaels, Drumoig and Charleton in the winter as they're all known for playing full course/no mats no matter what (they usually just close the course in the case of heavy frost).

They're some of the best kept courses in Fife. The use of mats is a bit of a myth for me.

PS. Good to know re Pumpherston, played it a few years ago and enjoyed it. Might get over again soon.

For some reason Gullane 2 can't be booked all week. Considering Gullane 3 or possibly Craigielaw (if they aren't mats).

Think they close each course for a week during the winter months, to give them a bit of a rest.?

Rattled your cage?

Patronising, nit-picking membership, hardly, just adhering to the rules. Arma should be including himself on the cant help front. When the board at Kilspindie point to a rule being compulsory, I reckon the clever, observant members will adhere. Nit-picking? have a word, the guy's blatantly admitted playing from the 1st cut, against Kilspindie's compulsory winter rules...case closed!

Yes there is better courses than Kilspindie down our way...you're pretty much stating the obvious.

Remember not getting on Kilspindie because i was wearing shorts on a hot summers day in July.

Just went round the corner and played Gullane 2

If you had read Kilspindies dress code prior to pitching up (pardon the pun), then you're shorts would've been tailored, yours obviously were not. Well done to the administration for upholding their values and moving you on due to your ignorance.

You'll find Kilspindies dress code on their website.

If playing unfamiliar courses in the future, I would recommend a quick glance through their websites, this will guarantee you wearing the proper attire for both on and of the golf course.

Happy golfing!

My annoyance of Kilspindie, is that to play in their open, you must have membership of an East Lothian course.

Strange one IMO

Christ!...Kilspindies getting it tight the last couple.

I'll ask why that is TB.

Kilspindie is a nice course. It's too short for me though.. last time I played there I shot a 63 scratch. Drove 6 of the par 4s.

No reason for this post other than to say.. I shot a 63 scratch...

Luffness had that reputation a few years back. The East Lothian guys will know if things have changed or if that's still the case.
