42 points normally needed for top 6 at split.

The last 6 season's the 6th place team at the split has had 44, 48, 43, 42, 42 and 42 points after 33 games.

So that's the kind of target that we have to reach to have a chance of a top 6 finish = 42 points or more.

9 games left and we need 15 points to reach 42 points and a chance at the top 6 and maybe European football next season.

4th could be good enough to get in the UEFA Cup and 5th for the Intertoto.

If we can't get 15 points from the next 9 games then SF can GTF.

Our run in could be a lot worse and we've not been hit by the fixture back-log, so won't have any extra midweek games.

Easily do-able.

42 points is achievable but performances will have to improve further. With the mid-table congestion I think we may need closer to 45 points and that may be out of reach. If we want to retain hope of getting into the UEFA Cup I think we'll need to have at least 48 points at the split.

You are correct although if you look a year further back you will see that Dundee managed it with 41 points.

Team lying 6th after 33 games

07 Apr 2001: Dundee(41 pts)

23 Mar 2002: Hearts(42 pts)

19 Apr 2003: Dundee(42 pts)

17 Apr 2004: Dundee United(42 pts)

16 Apr 2005: Motherwell(43 pts)

08 Apr 2006: Aberdeen(48 pts)

07 Apr 2007: Hibs(44 pts)

42 looks like like a good measure and looks even more accurate when you look at the other side of the coin.

A more appropriate measure of our likely target would be what total those teams needed to beat to finish 6th.

Team lying 7th after 33 games

07 Apr 2001: Dunfermline(41 pts)

23 Mar 2002: Kilmarnock(42 pts)

19 Apr 2003: Hibs(39 pts)

17 Apr 2004: Hibs(38 pts)

16 Apr 2005: Inverness CT(42 pts)

08 Apr 2006: Motherwell(44 pts)

07 Apr 2007: Falkirk(40 pts)

The Mean value for seventh place teams is 40.9, The median is 41.

So 42 or over looks even more like the target
