Dreadful Cover Versions

Mr X

Recommended Posts

In response to the 'Great Cover Versions' thread that was on here last week. Here's a few to kick us off:

Hear'Say - Bridge Over Troubled Water

M People - Itchycoo Park

Suggs - I'm Only Sleeping

Oasis - Street Fighting Man

Stereophonics - I Wanna Be Your Dog

British Whale - This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Us

However, I've found one that tops them all. Perhaps the worst cover version of all time. Missing the point completely and having no empathy whatsoever with the original. Can't do the embedding thing so I'll put in a link. You will watch this in complete disgust, but like a car crash, you'll be unable to pull yourself away.

Good people of Kickback, I give you...................................

Celine Dion and Anastacia's version of You Shook Me All Night Long by AC/DC.

Don't say you weren't warned.

I can't believe you've let me know such a song exists.

I will never forgive you :sad:

Stereophonics - I Wanna Be Your Dog

Is there a song they haven't covered?

The lad at work plays his iPod full of them all the time. Every 2nd song is a cover.

I'm finding hard to forgive myself. Kind of makes me feel better that you're all sharing my pain though.

Forgot 'Stop Me If You Think....' by Mark Ronson. He deserves to be killed.

Will Young - "Light My Fire";

Madonna - "American Pie";

Lily Allen - "Up the Junction" ;

and perhaps the worst of all Girls Aloud vs Sugarbabes - "Walk This Way"

All horrible.

I just saw shania twain's Acoustic, Country version of You Shook me all night long and thought it was a brilliant reinterpretation.

What's puzzling me is whether this is solely because I was watching it just after Celine Dion

The only other contender for Worst Cover in the World though must be

LOL. At the time I thought it was OK too. I was only 13 at the time and thought it was tres cool and trippy. Being a Beatles purist I can look back and shake my head in disbelief that I even entertained the fact that it may have been cool. The original is great, even if it's not one of my favourite Beatles tracks.

How about Briney Spears - I love rock and roll or Scissor Sisters - Comfortably Numb both terrible versions and imo the scissor sisters should be put up against a wall and shot for that but i think they should be shot anyway they are crap

All Saints' version of Under the Bridge has to be one of the worst ever - absolutely no idea what the song's actually about!

I have a 7" single with the Butthole Surfers doing Good King Wenceslas. I have a vague suspicion LSD may have been involved. Either way it is hilariously unlistenable.

That's like starting thread saying, "Right folks. What do you think about tall mountains? I think Everest is the tallest. Beat that."

Cringeworthy gold!

But look to Boyzone murdering Father & Son (one of the more beautiful, thoughtful performances in the hands of Cat Stevens). Sounds like a goose being slowly strangled to the sound of a drum machine and a Bontempi organ.

I actually heard this not long ago, at the time I thought it was a pretty decent cover and I haven't changed my mind, I still think they manage to pull off what a number of bands have tried and failed miserably at and that is to do a decent cover of a Beatles song.

Dear Prudence - Siouxsie & The Banshees

We Can Work It Out - Stevie Wonder

Day Tripper - Otis Redding

Happiness Is A Warm Gun - The Breeders

I Want You (She's So Heavy) - Booker T & The MG's

Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except For Me And My Monkey - Kristin Hersh

I Wanna Hold Your hand - Sparks

I would humbly suggest that these are marginally better than bloody Candy Flip.

I once saw Jim Davidson and 14 year old son sing this on The Generation Game. Truly awful and totally shoe-horned into the programme to sell albums

I have to return to that Celine Dion one for a month. I don't know which makes it worse:

(a) that I liked the original so any cover would have to be pretty special;

(B) women covering blokes' songs is rarely right - especially where they change "she" to "he". Interesting aside - in the other thread you may remember us all agreeing that one of the top 5 had to be Kate Bush's version of Rocket Man: well Kate never tampered with the lyric, bless her. Or

© I really didn't want to hear Celine Dion singing about herself coming...

I'm not sure that I'll sleep well tonight.

Really? Have you 'Innervisions', 'Talking Book' or 'Songs In The Key Of Life'? The guy was a genius at his best.

Drylaw Hearts

Pick any UB40 song and that has a fair chance of being a bad cover version.

Falling in Love is probably the worst.

Or Rolf Harris and Stairway to Heaven.

Or Mike Flowers and Wonderwall.

Need to clean your ears out mate!! Wonder's "We Can Work It Out" is one of the best Beatles covers I've heard. I agree his modern music isn't great, but try and get your hands on Innervisions or Songs In The Key Of Life. Both brilliant.

Any dance cover versions, all sung by sexy blonde "nobodies" and having the same backing music rearranged to suit the song.

Easy money for those involved.

Aye it was McFly. Its horrible. I used to work in HMV so I have heard TONS of this type of fecking guff.

May I suggest "the Enemy - these towns" which is a thievery/cover/reworking/update/whatever lets them sleep at night.... of the Jam's classic - "thats entertainment". AND its pish but on the radio all the time cos Jo "i love every band and song every" Whiley thinks its ace.

Anyone ever heard Lee Ryan (noofter from blue that fancied dolphins) sing "best of you" by the foo fighters? Admittedly the original isnt the best but his cover is absolutely hilarious. Think I heard it on radio 1 about 3 years ago. Funniest thing i have ever heard on the radio.

Lets Dance by Craig David - needs shot in the massive chin by Bowie.

Under the bridge - All Saints

Smooth Criminal - Alien Ant Farm

Something inside so strong - Rik Waller

Take on me - A1

Cant Get Blue Monday out of my head.....utter *****. Dunno who made the remix.

Atomic Kitten - Tide is High

Theres many many more tho!
