I've been advised to download Mozilla Firefox to use as my browser.

Should i?

What are benefits compared to IE7?

If i do, should i keep IE7 on my hard drive or just delete it?

Cheers

I've used Firefox for about four years now, better, faster, great features. The only time I need to use IE is for Hearts World, so no, don't delete it.

I used Firefox a few weeks ago to see what everybody was raving about.

I still dont know what everybody is raving about.

Maybe people prefer the name, I suppose Firefox is sexier than IE7.

Cheers for the reply's.

Does it offer greater protection from viruses, trojans etc?

I don't think so, but the conspiracy theorist in me believes that it prevents Bill Gates and his evil Microsoft empire from tracking everywhere I look on the interweb, which is probably bollocks but makes me feel better.

I use Opera. :)

it integrates all you need into one nice package, the mail client in one of the best around and it has a news reader, IRC and bit torrent client built in too. It renders pages faster than IE and firefox and has some snazzy features such as content blocking and individual site preferences.

It was the first browser to introduce tabbed browsing and mouse gestures too :)

All that may sound like it is bloated but even with all these features enabled it still takes up a lot less memory than firefox or IE.

There is the odd features on the occassional site that is not supported but this is happening less and less and they really are very minor features anyway.

I use Firefox (Mozilla) and it is 100 times better than IE7. I personally haven't noticed a change in speed but the add on's blow you away. And yes you can dlete IE7 after because one of the add on's allows you to view any page in internet explorer if it requires it. ie, hearts world.

Ther is also another one which allows you to navigate through your websites(forward, back, open new window, close window, refresh, open new tab etc) by using gestures with the mouse for example: to go back you just rightclik and hold, then drag the mouse to the left. Forwars just drag the mouse to the right. Refresh is drag it up then down. It's brilliant and when you use IE again you will hate the fact that you actually have to use the button togo back. I also end up right clicking a lot now out of habbit.

mouse gestures are great, makes navigation quick and easy. A feature that has been available for some time with Opera :) A trully innovative browser.

I'm sounding like a fan boy now! (maybe I am :o)

Say What Again

I always raise a smile at the way Firefox users go on about it.

It's a browser, not a cure for cancer FFS.

I use both and find one better for some sites but not the other. Lots of Firefox's add-ons are good, 95% are a waste of time.

Internet Explorer 7 is now where Firefox was a couple of years ago.

IE tried to copy the tabs off Firefox, but they made a terrible job of it!

The mouse gestures.

Ability to download youtube videos

IE page viewer (How ironic)

These are the main ones I use.

Also everytime you enter a new username or password into say kickback or any other site, it wil lcome up asking if you want it to remmebr these details forever so you don't have to re-enter them.

I don't know much about the snazzy media add-on things but if you use your PC for work, there are loads of cool toys. I do a lot of digging up info on people so I have a special toolbar thing I downloaded with lots of research links...I have an automatic note taker, I just highlight whatever it is that I want and it saves it for me...there's a favourites organiser...if you get an 'error 404' page, there's a tool that finds the original version of the page for you in archives (don't ask me how it works - but it does)...you can add dictionaries/translators...you can highlight an address and it will find an aerial image for you on one of the mapping sites....

Yes, I'm a geek. But they make my life easier.

Get add-ons and things here....

Not even close. Firefox and IE copied tabs off of Netscape, but it took them 10 years to do it.

hate to repeat myself, but Netcape introduced tabbed browsing in 2002(Firefox is basically the successor to netscape anyway.) - 2 years after Opera - the first major browser to use such an interface. :)

and no, I don't work for Opera

Dang, I forgot about Opera, but then I'm sure I had netscape with tabs well before 2002.

But even then that is how the technology industry works, they always borrow innovations from other companies and there are always the fan boys of one brand who get angry about it. Just look at the Apple fan boys and their constant harping on about Microsoft 'borrowing' the GUI system. They do tend to forget that Apple aquired it from Xerox in the first place and they were not the first to use it.

It might not be inherently safer than IE7, but more viruses are programmed to target known IE exploits because IE has the biggest market share. IE may also be targeted more because of Microsoft's (justified or not) reputation as an "evil" corporation.

Regardless of the browser you use, the more important issue is to use an up to date firewall and anti-virus.

Firefox 3's already in the Beta 2 testing stage, so it'll be interesting to see what market share that gains when it's released.

Downloaded a few add ons for Firefox - particularly liking yoono. Any other faves?

Also downloaded Opera, and very impressed with that. It seems to be a hell of a lot quicker than IE or Firefox.

Firefox is by far the better web browser,

The only thing I use IE for is my work email when at home, (web access via exchange :()

but the best thing is, just use what works for you.... find something you like and use it. (Safari will be worth a shot when it is out of Beta for Windows)

I don't know if Opera is better overall but it is def faster than the others but it has trouble playing videos in windows media and i had to change them to quick time but some sites don't give you the option. If anyone knows what flash player i need to download to get windows media files to play on Opera could you let me know.
