If Shankland does hypothetically win the league before he leaves, where does that place him in all time legends for you?

Somewhere below Braga, who has hauled us closer to the finishing line in the absense of Shanks and Devlin than I thought possible.

Don't get me wrong. Shankland is brilliant, but as an individual player Rudi was a phenomenon

Goals scored alone whilst he has been at the club puts him above Rudi Skacel.

Do you mean the number of goals scored? Because in that case you’d be saying Jamie Walker is above Skacel..

Yes above Skacel.
I think he would  become the greatest ever Hearts’ player full stop.
You cannot underplay the significance of Hearts wining the league in today’s game.

Yes. He is a league winner with us.

Few folk at the wind up on this thread, Rudi won two Scottish Cups, anyone else would need to win the TOP league, Shanks is a legend anyway, whether we win the league or not, his story is still unfolding and as I have stated previously Shanks returning will bring the best out of everyone else.

But FWIW, Rudi is the best player I have seen in a Hearts strip....Kevin Keegan does'nt count presumably.

Yes if he wins the league he would clearly be above Skacel

Winning the league in this era is statue territory.

Straight to top. Love Skacel, iconic player across the generations of fans. But a league winners medal trumps the lot

Well, what determines an all time legend to you? Honours? Goals Scored? Big Moments? Ability? Because if so, I’d say the only one Skacel has over Shankland so far is honours. It’s probably not a black or white type of answer, but I’d agree with others if Shankland wins the league this trumps Rudi’s a achievements significantly.

Don't really rate the comparison personally 😂

I think Shankland is the best and most influential player we've had since Cameron.

His goals, assists, appearances and likley number of years with the club elevates him above the likes of Cameron, Hartley and Skacel.

This wil be cemented If Shankland continues this form for the next 3 seasons or more- then I'd say he's even above Robbo.

Shanklands touch, control, link up play and the fact he's two footed makes him a special player. He's also good in the air and steing, add in his influence, goals and assists then he's the best in my adult life.

For balance he is also clearly a fat, slow, uninterested hun *****- I paraphrase opinions from previous threads.

Always thought it would be Robbo then Rudi but if Shanks captains us to the title and with the number of goals and assists he has had over the last four years he would have to go top of the list.

This is very good.

After your first reply I was ready to come in all guns blazing, fists pounding at the keyboard, my screen flecked with spit.

Then I read this and saw what you were actually doing.

Fair play.

Totally different players, impossible to put them against each other head to head.

Shankland has scored so many good goals, and Skacel only seemed to score good goals, albeit in lower numbers due to his position on the pitch.

There are reasons for both, which is why my answer is firmly:

St Johnstone.

So, it hinges on a league title we don’t know if we’ll get yet?   Rudi Skacel was a brilliant player, had an all round X factor.  He’s a better player in a head to head analysis of ability and influence.

Shankland is an out and out finisher and is adding influence this season which has been hugely cajoled by McInnes in persuading him to stay.

Posted

Skacel is in a category of his own because he was a proper character.

Especially against the vermin. He was on the pitch doing what we all dream of doing. Smashing one in the net turning around and telling them GIRFUY.

Even though Skacel had phenomenal ability I would say more than 50% of his status with us is down to the character.

Shankland is our captain and leader on the park. If he were to lift the league title above his head in this current climate of scottish football......You're talking about naming stands after him.

IF we win it, every player in the squad, who has contributed meaningfully, leaps above Rudi Skacel in the legend stakes, however, NONE of them is a better player

If we win the league then Shankland is in conversation as one of the greatest ever imo

If you're going by on-field performance, the team of 57/58 is number one. Regardless of the era (modern game etc) that was a season that's unlikely to be topped, going by the record books (before my time).

If you're including influence and other factors, Rudi won a couple of cups, but a league title would trump that.

Off the field, the team of 1914 is above all else in Legend status.

Would've loved to have seen shanks , rudi , Hartley and Fulron in same team

Yes unfortunately it does.

Shankland will be the greatest player in my lifetime if we win this league. So many critical moments he has contributed to this season.

If he wins the league for me he would be top of the modern era of Hearts players,

In that scenario I'd go

1.Shankland

2.Robbo

3.Rudi

At the moment its probably,

1.Robbo

2.Rudi

3.Shankland

If carlsberg did rivals...

It's true that Rudi won 2 cups, but does that make him a bigger legend than say Mickey Cameron or any of his team mates who won our first trophy in 30 odd years.

rudi must stay

If we win the league that doesn't mean Skacel becomes less of a legend. Both are very much sat at the top table.

The greatest Hearts player ever?

:notsure:

Hearts winning the league, with Shankland as captain, certainly would not place him in the 'greatest Hearts player ever' category, imo.

Not even greatest captain, I venture.

It's an interesting debate.

The good thing is we don't need the "vs".

We had Rudi. Now we have Shankland. Both legends of our club among others.

I think I prefer a pantheon to an Olympic style gold silver bronze pedestal.

You need to separate greatest from best.

For a Hearts team to win the league in this era would be unbelievable. And if the unthinkable were to happen, Shankland would be our greatest ever player and captain.

To me it would. Past great players , yes they have won leagues etc but to do so in the current era I think he would .

Goals scored is not the question, would you put either above Craig Gordon who truly is a club legend? I certainly wouldn’t as for Shanks and Rudi I think Rudi as he has not just won trophies but also shows his passion more than Shanks and clearly got the wind up Hibs!

goals dont tell a whole picture though eg did Rudi go through a 7 month spell where  his form had turned sour and say he wanted to leave the club ? Instead Rudi is on record as stating that he would come back to play for us for nowt, as long as it helped us avoid being demoted...and wouldve signed if the GFA hadnt stopped him. (yes he wouldve been paid mind you)

Also - did Rudi go and watch a rival team play football when he was injured - eg the rival team that he wanted to sign for and supported since being a kid ?

Yes winning the league would greatly help this thought re Shanks - especially if a run of quality form was partially responsible, but to my pea brain he isnt at Rudi's all round standing - Yet !

Totally - scoring in two cup winning finals ....including a pair in the biggest Hearts game in history, makes him an act hard to follow
