Canscot Posted March 18 Posted March 18 Morocco awarded AFCON Cup after result overturned! What went on there?
Canscot Posted March 18 Author Posted March 18 Not a big deal here in Canada. Only heard about it as I am presently watching BBC News. What goes on in European sport is not a big seller over here.

Australis Posted March 18 Posted March 18 The coverage of the tournament was awful. And the events in that final made it look like a laughing stock. Must be badly damaged for the next tournament. Two months to act and take action, but at least it wasn't dropped and forgotton like the Rangers Celtic usual fiasco will be.
martoon Posted March 18 Posted March 18 (edited) I've just found out thanks to your thread, @Canscot.👍 The final was farcical and I doubt very much this is the last of it. Edited March 18 by martoon

Suspicions of them getting favourable treatment from refs followed them throughout the tournament. Also engaged in some shitehouse behaviour like nicking goalie's towels. In the final, Morocco were awarded a penalty. Senegal manager pulled his players off the field. 15 minutes later they were persuaded to re-start the game. Morocco missed the pen, Senegal then scored in the 94th minute and won. Now they've been hit with the title being stripped for them having left the field of play. Morocco handed a 3-0 default victory. Typical AFCON nonsense. Meme federation. Edited March 18 by Cade

Not sure if this was the first finals with VAR but it was VAR that awarded the penalty whereas the on field ref deemed it not to be. The Senegal Coach took his team off the pitch in protest and it took 15 mins to coax them back on. I think the penalty was missed. Morroco appealed that Senegal broke the Rules and its taken until this week to deliver a decision. VAR does this to you I suppose when those operating it cant draw lines etc. The AFCOM VAR officials must have done their VAR training at Largs !!
jamboozy Posted March 19 Posted March 19 It’s not a competition that shows football in a good light imo, it’s like ‘all you need to know about cheating in football’ the (car) crash course for beginners.
If carlsberg did rivals... Posted March 19 Posted March 19 I remember the good old days of AFCON when there were allegations of witch doctors being used, far more straightforward than VAR!
Cade Posted March 19 Posted March 19 AFCON is never dull. Fans pointing lasers at players and official's eyes. Fans being paggered by local police. Teams threatening to go on strike unless their federation pays them more. Players going missing then turning up claiming asylum. Agricultural kung fu challenges. Awful goalkeeping. It's always a crazy competition and every edition has its own mental story.

You missed the other key moment in the match, the ref blew immediately for a very dubious foul when Senegal scored (this meant that VAR could not intervene and goes against all that we have been told about quick decisions by the on field officials for this very reason), this all happened before the last minute dodgy penalty. So I'm sure the combination of both events happening in a relatively short space of time tipped Senegal over the edge.

Cade Posted March 28 Posted March 28 Senegal parading the AFCON trophy around in the Stade de France before their friendly with Peru. Top shitehousing.
