tian447 Posted January 14 Posted January 14 Yes, yes, use an ad-blocker, or the Brave Browser, but it's not always possible for everyone all the time. I've noticed an increase in adverts on different threads which lock you in to a redirect loop, especially on mobile devices. They are never adverts for products or "well known" things, it's always scammy looking sites which you'd never touch anyway. However, once they load on the page, they prevent you from leaving unless you close the tab. You get stuck in a redirect loop on Android where you press back and it just holds you on the page. Is there any way for the mods to review the type of adverts we are getting on the site, or has anyone else noticed this? Next time it happens, I will take some screenshots of the offending adverts.
tian447 Posted January 14 Author Posted January 14 Not even joking, here is an example that has happened on this very thread as soon as it had been created I think I've been set up.
tian447 Posted January 14 Author Posted January 14 But the point is, you can see the automatic redirect has been blocked, but you can never get out of it by pressing the back button.

It's really annoying, and it's happening across 5 different devices (2 phones, a tablet, a Mac, and a laptop). There must be a way for these to be filtered out, as I don't see them on literally any other website.
Canscot Posted January 15 Posted January 15 (edited) I use Brave. Never get anything screwing me around anymore🤷♂️ Edited January 15 by Canscot

Since when have you noticed this? We went to some trouble a few months ago to reduce the extent of intrusive ads, especially for paid members. Hopefully they're not starting to get worse again.

Hi Uly, Probably just this week, possibly from last weekend onwards. 95% of the adverts are the normal type, you know, the sort of things you've been looking at on eBay or Amazon, but these intrusive ones seem to be popping up occasionally.

Thanks. We may have to talk to our ad providers again. Once ads start to get worse things rarely improve by themselves.

I actually PMd you in our previous conversation with a screenshot the other day. Surprised I hadn't got a reply as usually you are very prompt when I message late at night. Turns out you left the conversation
hughesie27 Posted January 15 Posted January 15 Here's what I sent Got a new one for you seen over the last couple of days. This popular appears at the top of my browser. Once it appears it then prevents me from using that page anymore. I cans scroll up but then it snaps me back down to the bottom of the page. No actual ad's appear anywhere but earlier something different happened where it sent me to one of those ad pages that prevent you from using the Back button to return to previous page. Only solution for both instances is to entirely close Chrome browser and re-open.
Daktari Posted January 15 Posted January 15 FWIW, and to give some context in case it's helpful, I'm not seeing anything like this. I'm on a MacBook Pro and using Apple's standard Safari operating system .

All roads lead to Gorgie Posted January 15 Posted January 15 Is Brave working as well as it used to on here? It's taking a lot longer for the main page on Kickback to appear and sometimes I just go back to my old browser and put up with the ads. I don't know if it's just my phone or laptop that's the problem now !

As far as I can see it's an arms race. Websites do stuff to make the experience easier, so the advertisers and the providers rehash ads to sneak past the changes that were made. Pain in the hole, that's what it is.
tian447 Posted January 17 Author Posted January 17 A new one tonight @Ulysses: I keep blocking them, but a new one seems to pop up every day

hmfc_liam06 Posted January 19 Posted January 19 I've been experiencing the same issues. And I really wish folk would stop with the Brave pish, it is not a solution for all. It's been said numerous times, some folk can't install a different browser on their devices for various reasons.

tian447 Posted January 25 Author Posted January 25 It's been better today. I'm still seeing the same adverts, but not getting the redirects. Cheers @Ulysses and your helpers if you have fixed anything relating to this
tian447 Posted February 19 Author Posted February 19 Seeing this sort of thing pop back up again. Now it's double width adverts which force the screen off to the side on mobile, and are preventing you from going anywhere unless you close the tab.

Couple here: You can see it pushing the menu off to the side of the screen, and quite often it's preventing any thread links from being opened unless the tab is refreshed or closed and re-opened. It also constantly shows as the page loading when it's doing this. Annoyingly, it's not always for dodgy websites either.
Marvin Posted February 20 Posted February 20 I've had this too. I know ads are aimed at your browsing but I only visit .nut when they hibsit.
