If you’re a genuine fan of The Smiths you just want to hear their music being played by whoever of the band is left to play it. Or should it just be left to tribute bands, who had **** all to do with any of the music and murder it.

Having first seen The Smiths in 1984 and several times after and Morrisey quite a few times I have no wish to see anyone other than Morrisey singing Smiths songs. Same as I have no wish to see "Big Country" with anyone other that Stuart Adamson or any other band missing an iconic frontman. It's liking drinking diet coke.

It is difficult for some people to move on from the things they know…they crave the familiarity of a past that never really existed, thankfully Morrissey cares only about his art (and it is always art) and not about re-re-repeating and reheating the things that have already been.

Well this is the thing, he doesn't care about sales now and that's a good thing. As long as he's happy.

I think he cares, as he always has, about being him.  He hasn't ever pretended to be anything other than the person, and the artist, that he is.  As the chap who sings for U2 once said "an original of the species".  There was nobody like him before, there has been nobody like him since he appeared, and my heart tells me that there may not be anyone quite like him once he has gone.

 

Gone for 5 years and he returns with a peculiar, angular, poetic, achingly romantic, deeply tragic, song that nobody else could have written even if they had wanted to.  It isn't about liking it or disliking it, it is about being grateful that someone has something to say, and a way of saying it, that doesn't just sound like everyone else.

Generally speaking, music is pretty harmless.

 

It's surely possible to acknowledge that different folks can gain enjoyment in various ways without it ending up in some sort of bun fight as to which artiste is more worthy or entitled to sing / play whatever suits for any particular occasion?

 

For example, there's a thread somewhere discussing original v cover versions, and I'm pretty sure that I posted this as being but one example of a cover version blowing the original to smithereens.

 

Just my opinion, of course, but the group in question had every right to play it ... live ... on the OGWT ... and absolutely nail it!
