I suspect for Murray it wasn’t just about signing a decent player. He would have relished the psychological impact on Celtic of the deal and the message it sent out about who was the financial powerhouse. And then along came that pesky McCann fella… When David Murray approached Souness to go to Rangers, Souness agreed on the condition that he could sign any player regardless of his religion, including Catholics. Murray agreed. Souness instigated that.

There was a bit in a match programme saying he was training with Hearts. He would be about 15 at the time. Apologies if this has been said before but I haven't bee following the thread. His brother Gordon was with Hearts for a season or two, but never appeared in the first team.

In any case, neither of them was/is noticeably anti-Catholic. Murray’s mother and I think Souness’ wife, were both Catholic. And what both recognised was that RFC needed to bring in the best players (regardless of background) that tax-dodging could afford. They weren’t going to let the club’s archaic traditions get in the way of a tilt at the Holy Grail of the European Cup.

Ultimatum is maybe a slightly strong word but his taking the job was dependent on that. I think you're right about his wife. I was introduced to him many years ago just when he had been transferred to Spurs as at that time I was going out with who would eventually be his sister in law.
Ex member of the SaS Posted April 5 Posted April 5 Regardless of what the board rooms think ,they both know that the bigotry is what makes them both huge. The fans can shout whatever they want as long as the cash rolls in. If either board renounced the bigorty and meant it, then both teams would be a shadow of what they are now.
EVHearts Posted April 5 Posted April 5 Is it genuine info, if Leeds don’t get promoted, then their 49rs takeover can’t go ahead. Leeds are wobbling right now 😁😁

NaturalOrder74 Posted April 6 Posted April 6 Just want to join in the pile on here seems like they are living in the fantasy that ‘these players aren’t good enough for rangers’ as they are all used to EBT’s and having player they couldn’t afford Barry leading the charge saying the exact same things the fans are saying he’s basically just a fan in the managers job think this is only gonna lead to history repeating its self they are gonna overstretch their budget and go bust again 100%

Its a truly bizarre mindset only embraced by supporters of 4 Scottish clubs. Go bust, as long as they beat their neighbours, bonkers imo but it doesn't show any sign of change.

They're also just about to rake in even more millions from their tie v Bilbao.

They are getting by on very fine margins and doing ( grudgingly ) admirably well by raking in cash from the secondary competition in Europe . They are a total state financially though , and the 49ers stuff is seriously dubious imo

These potential new owners have serious money, and they'll make millions from Europe this season. But, as you rightly say, this takeover does seem to be dragging on a little. Craiglockhart No.9 Posted April 6 Posted April 6 Technically they have gone bust... If your losing money (millions) year in year out with only the goodwill of your directors pumping in cash to keep things afloat. I'd call that gone bust.

In that case, there's a lot of clubs gone bust. We've also benefitted from friendly loans and donations.
