John Findlay Posted February 6 Posted February 6 Has sadly passed away. Helped Hearts to Two league titles and Three league cups. Condolences to all his family and friends. RIP Gordon. Quote
Carl Fredrickson Posted February 6 Posted February 6 Too young to have seen him play but I used to work in Torphican Street in the 1980s and I am sure I chatted to him once about Hearts as he had a barbers within a newsagents on West Maitland Street. This is my memory and I may be wrong as I was only a teenager at the time. RIP to Gordon and he will have been a hero to many. Quote
Daveandal Posted February 6 Posted February 6 RIP. Just before my time but a well known player. Quote
neilnunb Posted February 6 Posted February 6 🙁 Before my time but obviously part of the great Hearts sides. Quote

hereford_hearts Posted February 6 Posted February 6 I was lucky enough to have both Gordon Marshall and Alan Anderson live within 2 mins walk from my house. Used to have kick abouts with his son, Gordon Jr, even though he was a few years older than me. RIP GM Quote
jambo-in-furness Posted February 6 Posted February 6 R.I.P. Gordon, he was in goals when I first attended Tynie, was gutted when he left and thought Cruikie would never fill his boots. Quote
Morgan Posted February 6 Posted February 6 RIP Gordon. Unless I'm mistaken, it was his dad, Ronnie, who ran the Colinton Mains Hearts bus? I took worked at Haymarket and remember the barbers shop. Downstairs in a wee newsagents I think? Quote
N Lincs Jambo Posted February 6 Posted February 6 Sad news indeed. Never saw him play but did have the pleasure of taking 3 penalties against him at a Donkey Derby event at the Gyle in 74. I was 11. Didn't realise until recently that he was still playing for Arbroath at the time. His son Gordon Jnr used to drink in Winstons in Corstorphine. He was goalkeeper for Celtic back then in the 90s. RIP Gordon. Quote
Gundermann Posted February 6 Posted February 6 There's a legend for you. Am too young to remember him but my mother does. RIP. Quote
davemclaren Posted February 6 Posted February 6 Sad news indeed. He won 5 major trophies with Hearts. Never saw him play as he left a couple of years before my first match. Quote

jambos are go! Posted February 6 Posted February 6 Remember him well. A brave and talented keeper. Played for Hearts , Hibs and Celtic . He was a Newcastle legend as well and Bobby Moncur said he saved them from relegation on at least one occasion. Also played for England at Under 23 level. Despite having a few clubs he was a Hearts man through and through and a regular at Tynecastle after he hung up his boots. Gordon Junior also played for Celtic and other clubs was and still is a goalkeeping coach I think. He ran the Barbers in his dad's News Agent shop when he was a part time footballer at East Fife IIRC. His daughter was an experienced Scottish International Basketball player. RIP and condolences to his family. Quote

I remember once when we played at Arbroath when Gordon played for them, wee Ronnie insisted that the Colinton Mains bus waited to give Gordon a lift home. Bus didn't leave Arbroath until about 6pm. Ronnie hadn't bothered to tell anyone this was happening so everyone was back on the bus. Needless to say, both generations of the Marshall clan got it tight all the way home Quote
Victorian Posted February 6 Posted February 6 Played a couple of rounds of golf with him as he was a friend of my dad's. Really quality chap. Condolences. Quote
132goals1958 Posted February 6 Posted February 6 Very sad news. A true legend from the halcyon days of Heart of Midlothian FC. My friend and I spoke to him at the St Mirren League cup final and we were convinced it was a good omen considering the length of time we had waited since he was between the sticks. I know us older guys may over- romanticise about times gone by but they really were the good old days. A member of Hearts best ever team in that glorious 1957 /58 season. Quote

1971fozzy Posted February 6 Posted February 6 A legend on the pitch and a legend off the pitch. A gentleman and great company. I’m very lucky to have known him and been in his company many times. Very upsetting news, he was ill for some time. RIP big man. Love always ❤️❤️❤️🇱🇻🇱🇻🇱🇻 Quote

luckydug Posted February 6 Posted February 6 Very sad news indeed. I met Gordon once. I was six years old and our Supporters club used to put on a children's party at Xmas. A few of the players turned up and were brilliant with us kids. My Dad got speaking to GM and told him he was my hero. This was true as I used to stand at the wall at the Gorgie Road end and marvel at the great man. Anyway Gordon comes over and sits and chats for a good while and promises to give me a wave when he runs out at the start of the games. I was devastated when he left to join Newcastle. RIP Gordon Marshall Quote
dannymack Posted February 6 Posted February 6 Part of the most successful Hearts season in our history. Quote
Seaside jambo Posted February 6 Posted February 6 Sad news indeed My thoughts are with his family and friends Great player in a great team Quote
Jacques de Gatineau Posted February 6 Posted February 6 A trophy-winning legend with HMFC. Very brave to become a GK in those days, even braver to go on to achieve such things in the game. Quote
Maple Leaf Posted February 6 Posted February 6 Before joining Hearts, Gordon worked as an office clerk at the Rubber Mill in Fountainbridge. His desk was right next to mine and we became good pals. During our lunch breaks, a bunch of us teenagers from the Mill used to go up to the Brunstsfield Links to play football. When he signed a part-time contract with Hearts he was told to quit the kickabouts on the Links, so that was that. When he signed part-time for Hearts, an Evening News photographer came to the Rubber Mill and took a picture of him at his desk. I tried to get in the picture as well, with my Hearts scarf on, but the photographer told me to get lost! I have a picture of the two of us on a works outing to Largs (or maybe Loch Lomond). We both look impossibly young. When he signed a full-time contract with Hearts he left the Rubber Mill and we lost touch. I'm sad to read of his death. He was a good man. Quote
