Pish, Shankland has never ben a fast player.

He doesn't look in top shape, though. Could get leaner and thus probably make himself a little sharper on the turn.

I think his mental fitness is slowing him as much as anything. Frustration can really get to you, and he's got to be the most frustrated player in Scotland right now.

Seriously?! He was just shot of confidence. He looked like he was praying to the Gods when he was teeing up the penalty

As Captain he should have handed over the responsibility to someone else if that's how he was feeling before taking it.

Put it this way, I don't think he gives a **** whether it goes in or not

So with that mindset, he was never going to score

If I’m in his position, I just put my foot through it down the middle. That was a shocker.

Everyone digging up the OP. Thinking shanks gives a **** about scoring for Hearts is the real idiocy. He knows where he’s going and couldn’t care less what happens in the meantime.

At the very least a subconscious desire to burn the bridge with the Club down to the ground

At most, the mind boggles, not even going there

Shankland looked devastated when he missed.

The club threw him to the wolves when they never got in any other decent strikers for this season and he has struggled with the weight of trying to carry the whole team, which he has done for the previous 2 seasons.

The pressure and our level of expectation on Shankland has shattered his confidence.

No he is shot to bits. What he should have done if he wasn't feeling confident in taking it was be the bigger man and pass the ball to someone else

difficult one - I wanted spittal to take it but if he misses shanks is a bottler etc etc

also shanks somehow manages to score the penalty he could then go on a run of scoring

ideally it needed taken out shanks hands and with him being the captain probs only critchely could do that

time has arrived / past for shanks to be benched for everyone’s benefit especially shanks

Yup should have been taken out of his hands. The fact that we are where we are has a lot with being so overly reliant on him. The fact that even after his shocking run of not scoring and missing sitters we’re still making it about him by letting him take an important penalty in the hope it gets his confidence back is so wrong.

We often hear the phrase, no player is bigger than the club. Well we need to start showing that.

He leaving in the summer, that has been known since he didn’t sign the bumper new deal he was offered. His replacement should have been signed in the summer, to either take his place, or at least lighten the load from him.

folk saying in the summer that we don’t need to sell for less than 5m as his goals are worth that from euro qualification. The fact that he’s stayed could cost us so much more if we are relegated.

100% spot on.  Shankland will never score another goal for us.

If he starts on Sunday, Critch needs his head examined.

I'd be calling the Huns first thing tomorrow and telling them they can have him on the first of January.  Get him off the wage bill.

Ok, ok.

Daft suggestion from me.

I just don’t understand why his penalty taking style changed tonight.

And, I’m so feckin angry.

Because he has scored 1 goal in 24 games after scoring almost 1 in 1 for two seasons?

Can you imagine that kind of pressure?

Thats his entire life. Scoring goals. In front of thousands of people.

Not sure why people have suddenly decided that Shankland is the equivalent of a Russian spy rather than just a human being.

Stupid question, why on earth would he do that? People forget he missed one at ER last season as well. The only issue I have is he should have been dropped weeks ago but deliberately miss a penalty? No chance!

It consists of trying to be clever by putting it in the top corner.

He certainly should have been taken off penalties,  even when he was scoring otherwise.

Nah not having that, all strikers enjoy scoring goals.

After scoring goals for fun two seasons and being named best player in the league he would have went into the Euros thinking he was going to announce himself on the big stage. He never got a look in and absolutely nobody wanted to give him a big move. He knows his stock will never be higher and he knows that no matter what he does moving forward he’s never going to be the Scotland striker and he’s never going to play for a bigger club than Hearts.

To me he just looks like someone who’s given up and he looks gutted to be here

I am pretty devestated at the way Shanks career is coming to an end at Hearts. It is becoming something of a Greek tragedy and certainly was not meant to end this way.

It is almost unbelievable. I was furious at Shanks tonight and it is nothing to do with effort or anything like that but I was furious because that was a very winnable game and he has lest us down again, as have all the players this season.

I am raging at Shanks form which is truly mind boggling, I am raging at the rest if the squad who are not stepping up with goals and moments of quality and I am raging st Naismith and the board that we are in this position. What is that four wins in 21 this season.  Truly abysmal.

Even when he was scoring, he was missing penalties so not like it's something new. Missed 4 of his last 7.

I wouldn’t argue with that but as it’s our first one this season it’s not like he’s missed a few already, the manager would be thinking a penalty will get him scoring again. Backfired big time tonight but as I said before, he should have been benched weeks ago.

It's a sad reflection on Shankland that this thread even exists. So little effort, so little commitment from a captain of Hearts.

This sums it up. Well he'll definitely be off penalties now. I've seen Spittal and Dhanda take crackers in the past, even Grant knows what he's doing with them. Probably Boyce too.

It was that bad a miss thats the way it seemed at the time. No way he should have been taking it.

My thoughts as well. It should have been Spittal. A thoroughly embarrassing attempt by Shankland.  With his current form he should be no where near a start. For a Hearts Captain that was as poor a performance as I can remember. His heads gone.

Obviously not, but share the OPs sentiments.

Its becoming comical.

He's came back from preseason not fit enough, and his confidence has went. He's not a professional footballer, and honestly, bigger clubs than us would be wise to steer clear. He'll mentally quit if he gets a bumper deal because he'll know its his last big one.

He should have signed the extension, got his head down and focused on what was in front of him. Instead he let his agent fill his head with delusions of RA PEEPUL and sure enough, he's taken his eye off the ball and is a ****ing waste of space at the moment.

Grateful for the last couple of seasons. But this is an embarrassment.
