Typical evidence-free Kickback assessment of a manager whose teams scored goals and won points, loads of them. I enjoyed watching that.

Eye-bleeding? Don't let the facts get in the way.

All the best, Robbie Neilson.

His defensive tactics were holding the squad back to a paltry 1.5 gpg. As soon as he left, we exploded to our current (checks notes) .89 gpg. Defensive shitebag and all that…

Really? Oh. Then that seems a bit of a weird move.

They can’t get promoted through competition but MLS is expected to keep expanding and TB are hopeful of promotion, even with Orlando getting a team. (Because US sport stupidly sees clubs in close proximity to each other as a bad thing.) Winning silverware and drawing crowds are seen as positive so in a way he’s there to get them promoted, just not in the normal way.

Good luck to him and his family. A lifestyle change and a new adventure. For a golfer it is a dream move and a great life experience. Fair play to him.

Hes never been an Assistant manager. Sounds unlikely to me.

Great move for him and his family. There’s more to life than trying to be the next Alex Ferguson..

It didn’t work out for RN in the end and the time was probably right for him to go but he is still one of the best managers in our history and a great servant to our club….

All the best Robbie

Good move for Robbie. I'm sure it will be an interesting experience and opportunity for him and his family.

If the rumour about rangers is true, I'm glad he's made the right call.

Wish him all the best!

Cracking quality of life for him and his family out there.

Good on him - will be well paid & his family will be treated to a great lifestyle. If he does well an MLS club will no doubt be having a look at him

What a weird job to take 😂

Fair play to him and hope he's successful and has a blast.

There's no way he took this over being assistant at Rangers.

Great lifestyle move tbf.

Many teams in the tier below the MLS (USL) simply wouldn't want promotion due to the logistical costs of moving from east/west USL conferences to the whole country MLS, that said with the MLS now at 29 teams it's possible that the MLS may split into east west also in the next few years

Good gig but it's not the old Rodney Marsh Rowdies. No 71,000 capacity ground - in fact they don't even play in Tampa.

It's St Petersburg -  cracking place. 7,500 capacity ex- baseball ️ stadium.

Player list is poor but they are now owned by The Tampa Bay Ray's baseball team so 💰 no problem. He has half a dozen to add to the team so maybe a few SPFLers will be looking out the factor duffelcoat.

Do you ever see promotion / relegation making its way into the MLS as the sport continues to grow?

I would love it, but no owner in a franchise model in the US would allow that to happen. Fan bases would abandon them in droves and loss of TV money would crush them. Parachute payments may save the finances, but not crowds.

I have no problem admitting pure proximity means I spend more on my MLS team than I do Hearts. Lots of games, swag. The atmosphere is fun. The quality of play is often really good, especially as you’re getting more competitive internationals from abroad versus retirement league types. I really believe, on the field, MLS someday can be right outside of the big ones. TV money, beautiful new stadiums popping up everywhere, real investment paying off in youth development, growing crowds, all great vibes.

Saying that, I follow Hearts closer because football/soccer is not built for a playoff system. I could get over lack of relegation, but the playoffs just are a poor fit for the sport. I think any Hearts fan on this board with an open mind would love the experience at any MLS stadium, but they’d tune out the second the roster and postseason models were explained.

To bring it back to Robbie, I think USL is doing really well and he’ll thrive. The cost of entry is cheaper and fanbases love it. If he does some winning, he could find himself at an MLS club which would be a damn good gig to make buckets of money coaching big name players in big cities. He’s young. He has time.

I just can’t wait to see what random Hearts Robbie brings to The Big Guava.

The only way I can see it happening is if MLS itself splits into leagues with big revenue sharing deals so that relegated teams get big payments even if they’ve been in the lowest leagues for years.

The US sport that most desperately needs it is baseball though.

The biggest difference with MLS/USL is that only 52 teams exist in all of the U.S. and Canada by comparison with 1,150 in Europe.  Promotion / Relegation is really not an issue with so few teams in only two leagues so the play-offs take that place in the league structures.

The biggest issue right now then is expansion.  MLS currently has 29 teams although they're  expanding to 30 with the addition of San Diego.

https://soccerstadiumdigest.com/2023/05/san-diego-mls-expansion-team-unveiled/#:~:text=With it increasingly looking like, playing out of Snapdragon Stadium.

In a couple of years or so, despite denials, that is likely to go up to 32 with the addition of Las Vegas, NV and maybe, depending upon financing, Phoenix, AZ.

Meanwhile USL is actively looking to expand to 40 teams in the next few years.

And at some level you can’t have a sane national competition with over 40 teams. Every other pro league has stopped at 32. (Again, baseball can and should expand well beyond but that requires something other than the minor league system that exists now.)

Americans have shown abundant interest in soccer in person but almost no interest in watching MLS on TV. (And why would we when there’s so much European football that’s so much better on TV?) So the logical thing is to keep adding clubs. But how do you keep that from becoming unwieldy?

That's true to a certain extent but Apple TV does seem keen to up it's subscription numbers especially after they surged once Messi signed for Miami.

This post is along the lines of the 1 in 10 for Hearts.

50% is correct. But it’s 22 games, 11 wins, 7 draws and 4 losses. Now you don’t say it’s bad but you also don’t say it’s decent. After 22 game last year we had 12 wins 3 draws and 7 losses.

40 points to 39.

Which 22 game run is better?

He seems to be doing a half decent job tbf as he usually does.

I think the rowdies have been trying to get into the mls as an expansion team for years.

They'll probs eventually make it but need a few things to fall in their favour.

Won a playoff game last season. Dealt with Hurricane issues at the stadium. Four straight away matches, where they did pick up a win.

There must have been something poisonous off the pitch because this is a surprise.
