Lewis Ferguson wins the Serie A's Midfielder of the Season award.

It's a shame he's injured and will miss the Euro's, as would have been good to see him get some game time there.

Clarke would probably still play Kenny McLean ahead of him.

Congrats to the laddie though, hell of an achievement.

Think we would have preferred them to keep outside top 4....although Conference is much more our level

Currently 5th

That’s some achievement.

I’m not even going to try and claim a tenuous link, but I remember watching his old man and thinking - this was around the time Channel 4 started “Football Italia” that Derek would have been a player in Série A.

Josh Doig must be regretting his move to Sassuolo in January.  Will be interesting to see where he goes in the summer - Serie B or his third Serie A club in two years.

The lad didn't have a choice. Verona shafted him, he was in the airport ready to board the flight to Marseille and then they shipped him off to Sassuolo who bid a little bit more than Marseille did.

Two quick goals for Atalanta

Atalanta's win clinches a Champions League spot for Bologna next season, as Roma can't catch them now. Hell of an achievement for a relatively small Serie A team like Bologna, whose results I've followed ever since Hickey (and Ferguson to a lesser extent) played for them.

Does Atalanta's result have a bearing on that very slim situation we could automatically qualify for the Europa League?

Don't think we want them to get a CL spot via league position (top 4)

Josh Doigs Sassuolo relegated.

Can't see him staying for Serie B

Intriguing stuff in the relegation zone today. Sassuolo lost 2-0 to Cagliari and are as good as gone with one game left. Udinese currently 0-0 at home to Empoli. Both teams could do with winning this - Udinese are away to Frosinone, the other major player in the relegation battle, in their last game and Empoli are at home to Roma.

Verona should be able to stay up - away to relegated Salernitana tomorrow.

Frosinone leading 1-0 at Monza.

I think they’ll pick up more points than Juve in their last two games and will finish fourth, which would end our very slim chance of going straight into the EL group stage.

Surprised nobody has mentioned Allegri. What a mad guy

As for Hearts, they need Atalanta to finish outside the top four – plus other permutations – to go straight into the Europa League group phase.

Rangers fans will therefore be cheering on Atalanta in their remaining two fixtures in the hope of having as kind a qualifying route as possible.

Think would prefer conference anyway but if it screws up ra gers all good

If Atalanta win the Europa league final and Dortmund win the champions league final, we will go direct into the Europa league next season. Less games but more money. Thats how I understand it

Only if Atalanta don’t finish fourth - I think. But I think they have a very good chance of finishing fourth. Bologna vs Juventus this evening will go a long way towards settling that issue.

Bologna currently annihilating Juventus. 2-0 after 20 minutes, but it could easily be four.

PortyJambo

Bologna 2-0 up, and had a 3rd disallowed, on Juventus already, after only 15 minutes

PortyJambo

With 3 goals in 5 minutes, 2 of which were absolute gifts, Juve are level with Bologna...who are hibsing it after dominating the game.

Posted

Bologna concede three in five minutes late on after being 3-0 up. Juve were dead and buried. Unbelievable.

The situation is still as clear as mud after this evening’s draw between Bologna and Juventus. Bologna, Juve and Atalanta can all finish 3rd, 4th or 5th. If Bologna and Juve both win their last matches, Atalanta would need to win both of their remaining matches (at home to Torino and Fiorentina, so doable) to avoid finishing 5th.

Hopefully Atalanta will be knackered and/or hungover after this coming Wednesday’s Europa League final against Leverkusen.

Typical end to and Italian season - it will go to the wire with some unexpected results still to come.

Both at the top and bottom.

It's almost like it's scripted/arranged 😉

From Football

From Football Italia

There is only one relegation spot left going into the final round of the season, as it is between Empoli, Udinese and Frosinone.

Salernitana have already been relegated for some time, while Sassuolo joined them following the 2-0 home defeat to Cagliari on Sunday.

Hellas Verona won 2-1 away to Salernitana this evening and took themselves to safety on 37 points alongside Lecce, while Cagliari are also secure on 36.

We go into the final round this weekend with Frosinone on 35 points, Udinese 34 and Empoli 33.

Sky Sport Italia calculate that Empoli have a 55 per cent chance of getting relegated, compared to 22 per cent for Udinese and 11 per cent for Frosinone.

It is also possible we could see a relegation play-off between Empoli and Udinese, so there is an 11 per cent chance of that happening. If two teams are level on points in third from bottom, then they go into a two-legged play-off.

What the teams need for Serie A safety

Because Udinese and Frosinone face each other in the final round, the only possible play-off would be between Udinese and Empoli.

In order to survive, Empoli need to either draw with Roma and hope Udinese lose, or beat Roma and leapfrog at least one of the other two.

Frosinone can afford to draw and still guarantee safety, because it would put them on 36 points

and Udinese on 35.

Serie A standings

Frosinone 35

Udinese 34

Empoli 33

Atalanta

Bologna currently losing 1-0 at HT away to Genoa. If it stays that way it would mean Atalanta have 2 games to surmount the 2 points they’re currently behind Bologna.

Basically, not looking good for that weird way that Atalanta finishing 5th and Dortmund beating Madrid could have us automatically in the Europa League proper.

BackOfTheNet

2-0 Genoa now. Basically, next to zero chance that Atalanta don’t take at least 3 points from the next two games, so playoff for Europa it is for us.

Perth to Paisley

They put the tools away when CL qualification was guaranteed.

Prefer the conference anyway😁

Atalanta 2-0 up at half time. Currently 4th as it stands overtaking Bologna and if stays the same can overtake Juventus in 3rd if they beat Fiorentina next week.

So although there was (still technically is if Torino can do something in the 2nd half) the slimmest of chances that would mean we were automatically Europa, the playoffs it is.

3-0 to Atalanta now with under 20 mins left. I think we can put the direct entry to group stage hope to bed.

Probably a blessing in disguise. There's some decent teams in the europa league. Conf league gives us a better chance of making at least being competitive.

You have opened up a can of worms there, we still have a play off round where we can qualify and apparently the manager and players want to be in the EL.

I'm sure we'll go for it. Quite prestigious for us to be in the EL. Be very tough though.

I see what you mean, but if we manage to qualify at least it wouldn’t be like we snuck in (kinda like the difference between Scotland qualifying for Euro 2020 and 2024).

I have a hunch our signings this summer won’t seriously elevate us to compete with the tougher sides in either competition but the new format will mean we will play teams from different levels in one off ties, so it’s not necessarily going to be the same drubbings like a couple of years ago.

Yeah absolutely. There was a bit of a stushie about folk saying we would be better off in the Conference in the European thread.
Im sure we will be discussing it again over the next few months, a great dilemma to have though, big team problems 😆
