I've said it before, and I'll say it again.  Leonard Cohen is yer only man for a cover of Sound of Silence.

All i can find is him reading the words out. Is that the one you mean?

Yep.  I posted it sometime earlier in the thread (I think).

I think that's why I like it.

Mind you, if he sang it through a comb and a sheet of paper he'd still have done a better version than Disturbed.  :runaway:

Yeah, i actually meant everyone i know seems to love it. My fault for not being clear in my comment. It's definitely not one of my favourite Simon and Garfunkle songs either

Does this count as a cover version? Johnny Marr doing The Smiths?

Anyway, it's the best version of it I've heard, what a legend.

As a fan of disturbed since the beginning I've seen them live on several occasions.

I can understand the cover not being for everyone. But when you're in the crowd and it is being done live.....it really does create something quite special.

I know the vocals lack a bit but English isn't their first language.

Absolutely brilliant everywhere else.

Agreed.

That Disturbed version is decent, but it completely misses the point for me. It tries way too hard to be powerful. It's the idiot's version. It's explicit in it's attempt to manipulate your emotions, it tells you how to feel - when the power of the original is entirely implicit in the subdued delivey of those beautiful lyrics, and the utterly sublime harmonies of Simon and Garfunkel. It leaves enough room for you to bring a bit of yourself to it. Genius.

Love a bit of Leonard Cohen to soundtrack a boozy Sunday dinner, too.

Acid reign did Don't leave me hanging on the telephone, that was good.

Nirvana's Vaselines covers were decent interpretations.

It loses the sense of poetry, I think.

Oddly enough, my favourite version doesn't have the harmonies, because it's Paul Simon singing it solo at the 10th anniversary of 9/11.  I think it's how he sings it to match the occasion, if you see what I mean.

I would probably be quite enthusiastic about it in those surroundings, tbf. When its been on the jukebox for the 8th time in an hour, i start to think about bottling people.

It's not really cheating. Zep stole the song in the first place so their version was a cover

Thanks Christ. Someone else that can't be bothered with it. Also see "ironic" covers of pop songs by rock bands.

Since there’s a Cure thing going on this one is one of the best, and by a great band.

How about Bluegrass covers of pop songs? Don't these are ironic, just nodding in the right direction.

The cover of Crazy is wonderful.

I’m not sure how to word this but a lot of “Rock” musicians consider themselves as better than pop stars. The bluegrass stuff tends to be more appreciative of good songs in their purest form. All in my humble opinion of course.

I went to see Hayseed Dixie a while back. Very good as a live band as they were entertaining and clearly 'at it', but I'd never be able to suffer listening to them at home.

Probably not an INXS number known to many (if any) but I think this version has amazing energy.

Just heard on Virgin Radio that Suspicious Minds by Elvis was a cover. Who knew? Well, not me. Can't compare it to the original (and wouldn't want to, though FYC did a splendid cover) as that was a flop.

And "Dancing in the Moonlight" was released twice 30 years before Toploader.

Anyway, I found that interesting......... or maybe I'm just having a slow work day

Ooooh! Nice one. 👍

I reckon that's a score draw.

The production on the Neil Diamond version is top-notch and I'm loving that bass line and the brass accompaniment that oozes in & out.

However, the acoustic guitar Johnny Cash version (got my ear buds in 😎) is superb ... oh ... and that voice.

3-3 ... it goes to extra time & penalties.

Maybe there was some kind of deal they both made with the devil that in order to make some of the funkiest songs of all time, they also had to release some of the unfunkiest songs as well

That ☝️ is a stoater!

Soul Train totally roools! 😎
