Who is the greatest sports star of all time?

Still MJ for me. Unbelievable! I watch him and think :wtf:Is that even possible.

Maradona, Suger Ray Robinson and Usian Bolt are the same. A gift from somewhere.

Don Bradman

Whether in Test cricket or across all first class matches his batting average is so far ahead of anyone else. In Test cricket he averages 99.94 next best is 61.

Yep Bradman and Phelps were the two that came instantly to mind for me

+1 for Tiger

Usain Bolt is someone I’d have loved to have seen. The buzz about the stadiums at these big finals was electric and he always delivered.

Eddy Merckx.

Similar to Bradman that his records will never be broken. He won pretty much every major cycling race from 3 week grand tours to monuments and spring classics.

I'd say Michael Jordan, after watching his documentary he was something else. The standard he played in and dominated was so high.

He's not even the GOAT in Golf.

Nicklaus would have won half the majors in Tigers era.

For all the sporty bits of CB Fry it's always this bit that stays with me
"even well into his seventies he claimed he was still able to perform his party trick: leaping from a stationary position backwards onto a mantelpiece"
I know it's Wikipedia but I'd heard it elsewhere.
How do you find that you can do that? 😂

It's always going to be near on impossible to compare players across eras. Courses are so much longer now and the technology involved nowadays means that carry distances are so much greater.

The majority of current players are athletes which wasn't really the case pre Norman and Faldo.

However, the level of competition during Tiger's time is so much fiercer than what it was for Palmer, Nicklaus, Player, Watson etc.. To win what he has and to dominate for so long is untouchable. He's the reason why the purses are huge today and the reason why the crowds have got bigger.

Winning the 2008 US Open with a broken leg then the 2018 Tour Championship and 2019 Masters after what he had gone through will never be topped. Competing at this year's Masters was outrageous following the car crash.

The often mentioned thing about modern sportsmen being better as they are fitter doesn’t really mean anything though as if Nicklaus etc had played in the modern era he would also be using modern training techniques and equipment. And of course it was 24 years between his first and last majors meaning he was able to adapt.

Tiger will take a lot to be toppled as the greatest.

Jack won the master at 46 years of age. When Seve was at his best, Lyle, Faldo, Norman and he was second a fair amount of times. They're both brilliant.

Tiger Woods. At the top of his game he mastered the game of golf in a way that I don't think most people thought was possible. If it hadn't been for injury he would have won many more majors.

Great achievement. As was Phil winning a major last year at an even older age. Watson should have seen out another Open win at 59 in 2009 too.

If Tiger's leg can hold out, he still has the game to win another. St Andrews would have been the perfect course as it's not a punishing walk but it may come round too soon for him this year.

What about George Digweed?

The first sportsman to win world titles in five different decades.

30 World Titles.

19 European Cups.

12 World Cups.

Olympic Medals.

He's got to be Britain's most decorated sports man.

Also, Look at the change in fitness from when tiger came on tour to now. Vast majority of these guys on tour now are ripped. He changed golf completely.

And vice versa.

Nah, Tiger would have won 30 majors in Nicklaus era. Ben Hogan in his prime was better than Nicklaus.

Titles won on full throttle, hence the injuries, maybe.

BDC could end up with similar injuries, spine, knee, hips & ankles, all susceptible...

Federer, Nadal and Djokovic are the greatest ever and completed against each other. If only one had been around, it's possible they'd have won every slam for 20 years

Woods would have won very few in the Golden Bear era. I'd also put Severiano Ballesteros Sota above Woods as a GOAT in golf.

As fun as this tread is it's impossible, imo, to have a GOAT across all sports. You can only really be GOAT in one sport your own. However Bo Jackson gave it a good shot.

Without a doubt. Even with Fed and Djokovic around, Nadal practically owns the French open.

Seve better than Woods? No chance.

Woods is the greatest to pick up a golf club, absolutely no question, he could hit any shot, shots that most top pros couldn't play, at his best he had the ball on a string. Seve was great, probably the greatest European ever but not in the same league as Woods, no chance.
