The Lost Final

Just finished on BBC Scotland. The story of Scotland's 1982 European Under-18 Championship win and Pat Nevin's search for footage of our goals in that final, which the BBC didn't cover or even mention in their review of the year that December.

I didn't know Gary Mackay had scored in the final and what a goal it was.

I remember watching the 2006 final on a Saturday night. I think it was live on BBC2. Was excited about Clum playing. He looked like some player at the time. Shame it didn't turn out that way.

Getting to that final was an incredible achievement for Scotland, but mental to think only 6 of the squad called up actually went on to get a full cap. Garry Kenneth only got 2 caps and vanished off the face of the earth, Michael McGlinchey played international football albeit for New Zealand, Wallace should have got more than 10 caps but we all know why he never. Dorrans, Snodgrass and Steven Fletcher all done well in their careers, but the last 2 didn't even feature in the final squad.

I remember the Saudi game because it was played at Tynie. The Saudis looked 30 year old 😂

A lot of very good players in that '82 U18 team.

3 Jambos (including Westwater who was on the bench), no Robbo though as he didn't really break into Hearts first team until the following season.

Yeah I remember that, so many of their team were 'supposedly' born within a few weeks of the cut off date for eligibility.  All these young teens running around with full moustaches, it was clearly a con job.

The Saudi game was at Hampden. It was the semi final against Portugal that was at Tynie.

I only just got into the 1989 semi v. Portugal at Tynecastle.

Clicked through the McLeod St. turnstiles and there was no room on the school end terracing.

Ended up almost pressed against the fence with a view of the game through the goalnets. It was weeks after Hillsborough, iirc, and was the most unpleasant, uncomfortable experience I've had at a game.

I remember the goal and then exiting the ground with my feet mostly off the ground.

I knew it would be busy so was in the ground more than half an hour before ko and managed to get a bench seat under the shed. The game kicked off about 40 minutes late.  The crowd was unofficially estimated as 35,000 while the capacity at the time was 29,000.  I thought there was even more in the ground.

My dad took us as young teenagers and we were right behind the goal when Brian O'Neil scored. Have a memory of it being a really balmy night and like you we were there early as it was obvious there would be a big crowd. I seem to recollect stories of there being close to 40k inside the ground at kick off.

In terms of the documentary,  really enjoyed it. Did well capturing the feeling of memory and youthful camaraderie. Mackay's goal was a belter as well.

Pat Nevin writes a fair bit about the tournament in his autobiography which I would highly recommend.

Sure the Saudi team played at Tynie in the group stages. Great times, think it was 50p to get in for 2 games!

I recall the police estimated that 3/4k were outside when the gates were closed.

We'd had full houses of 29k vs. Hibs, Celtic and Rangers in the preceding few years but that night was the most packed I've known at Tynecastle.

There had to be, at least, 2/3k over the capacity that evening, over and above those who were turned away.

As usual we left the Tynie Arms about 10 mins before ko and the queue was backed up to Gorgie Road . Luckily the season ticket gates at the back of the old nursery were open and no one seemed to know about them so got in ok

Tynecastle at its best.

Seem to remember Wallace Mercer announcing on the tannoy that the game was a sell out and him getting quite a few boos from the non Jambos in the crowd.

Fair enough, I might have exaggerated, but how many of the players in that photo would you believe were qualified to play in a U16 tournament?  3rd left back row?  The guy next to him?  The guy next to the guy next to him?  Maybe they just have very hard paper rounds in Saudi Arabia.

Sure it was good weather when they played at Tynecastle

We were behind the goals and you could see at bye kicks and corners how hairy they were  :)

Surprised nobody has mentioned this before but Roxburgh played with two wide men (Nevin and Dick) and Gary Mackay as a false 9 (to quote Nevin)

This was years before Levein tried this with the senior team.

Must be okay to play this formation when you are winning ... or did nobody notice, like they didn't when Levein did; until he pointed it out!

Hypocrites.

Always thought that Bowman left us too soon as I liked him as a player. Financial necessity though.

Great to see that again. What a fantastic night it was. I was in the Gorgie Road end that night and if we’re honest, as much as we slag the dodgy Saudis, we rode our luck with the stonewaller and the very harshly disallowed goal. Not saying we didn’t deserve to win, but they were a couple of home team decisions!
The opening day was at Tynecastle a couple of Saturdays before and I was there, too, along with about 1,000 others at most. It was a double header and me and my mate were laughing about how old the Saudi lads looked.

Missing the point Roxburgh played a system 'without a fixed  big man up top' years before without any negative reaction.

Suggests that outcome outweigh agenda driven analysis or comment

Levein made many mistakes as a national team boss but this tactic being his 'legacy' is nonsensical.
