There’s seems to be a few threads celebrating Australian “ culture “ , in particular soaps . I much preferred this pile of tosh really . It was classic wooden tv , made “ crossroads “ seem like it was written by Denis Potter. Who can forget Maggie “ the freak “ Ferguson or Bea Smith ! ( I met both ladies at a charity night ) and also Vera “ vinegar tits “ ! My all time favourite character was Nola Mackenzie . She was a wrung un !

I remember when channel 5 launched in the 90s they were showing cell block H from the start. It was on in the middle of the night so we taped it every night to watch.

Also seen prisoner cell blocH the musical at the Kings. The freak was in it with lily Savage playing g Bea Smith.

So bad it was good.

Was it not on or around the same time as Tour of Duty?

Interesting fact about Sheila Florance who played Lizzie is that although she died in 1991, had she lived she would be 106.

That cracked leather face of hers made her look 106!

Always liked when the Freak slipped on her leather glove... 😁

Was it on the same night as ToD, you think? Was trying to think what I used to watch that kept me up late enough to watch Prisoner, so it could have been that. Loved ToD, the music was great.

And one of the writers on it who also appeared on screen in several episodes was Ian Smith. AKA Harold Bishop.

Sure Vivien Grey (Mrs Mangel) was also on it. 😁

I missed that musical. Sounds rather camp.

It was a big error getting rid of Nola Mckenzie as she was a worthy adversary to Bea Smith. Big and butch

It was great, I enjoyed the reboot too when my ex made me watch it.

I love Australian culture, I love that they don't give a **** and call a spade a bloody shovel.

Also, Australian comedy is among the finest on this planet.

It was, lily Savage had everyone in tears laughing, including the freak. A few times she had to stop in a serious scene as she was laughing too hard.

Love PCBH... I have the full boxset ... collecting them cost me a lot of money ... 692 Episodes.

Watched it on STV ... when Tour of Duty used to be on after it.

Watched it on Channel 5 when it was on there.

And watched the boxset twice. Classic programming.

Tommy Dysart who played Jock Stewart just died the other day ... a great character.

Half the women in that clip would get to at least the semi-finals of a Nicola Sturgeon look-a-like contest.

I remember in those wee hours somethinh called Winds of Change. Just wee segments of people amd their lives, around the world.

I remember one on a young Indonesian boxer who had lost all 9 of his fights but was convinced he was going to make it.

Anybody else remember Winds of Change?

Aye.

I thought this rung a bell, done a search and found a post I made frim 5 years ago...

Sgt Zeke- the battle hardened vet steering his rookies through their tour with a mixture of tough love and common sense. A father figure, a little bit distant as like Billy Brown he'd seen things and been places... took it hard when one of his boys got hit. Tried not to show it...

Good lookin flyboy chopper pilot who always seemed to be taking his aviators off or carrying out some insane medivac.

Simple farmer type boy. Struggled at first to adjust to army life, just wanted to go home to Mary Anne and raise kids and a crop. Now a hardened pro, The Sgts right hand man.

Token black guy unhappy at fighting the white mans war. Just looking forward to getting back to 'the world' and his brothers on the lower East side.

Token new character in every episode who only had a few weeks left to go who you knew would die before the titles rolled.

A slower and more sombre closing theme ala The Sweeney.

It’s certainly showing its age but is still a really good watch.

Loved cell block H, was on around midnight so as a teenager I had put the tv on in the bedroom and pretty much sit right next to it so I didn’t wake my folks, brilliant show.

I'm sure I remember watching it on  stv and grampian (managed to get a signal somehow) in the early 90s- and grampian was a year or two ahead- double the fun. So many late nights.

So many great characters too- Lou Kelly was another great baddie and had a weird early crush on doreen

Actually even though the sets were made of lego the acting was not too bad really and even though the storylines were OTT the show did explore some serious issues sensitively...drug use, lesbianism, mental health. suicide etc
