Car Trouble

Салатные палочки

Over the last week I have started to hear a sort of howl from somewhere in the car while driving. It started when I was over 60mph but recently I have heard it when I've been over 30. It only kicks in then and I don't hear it when idling or revving it up when parked. It also only seems to be when I'm going in a straight line for a while, it starts to kick in and gets louder but dies down when I slow.

Went to the garage yesterdsy and he said it's probably a wheel bearing but anything I check online says this would be accompanied by a rumbling when turning left or right. I can only get booked in next Monday to get it looked at but I'm now wondering if I should just get the train to work this week.

Anyone else had this problem or anyone able to shed any light on it? It's a 2012 Focus TDCi.

Yep had the same problem twelve months ago when garage checked there was a cat wedged under the bonnet hence the howling hope you get problem sorted.

I had wheel bearing go and the mechanic asked if I'd heard it rumbling. I hadn't. High pitched noises are the ones that are most obvious.

I'll give him a phone tomorrow and see if he can try and fit me in this week. Just had a new battery fitted last week as well.

Would imagine the car must have higher miles for a wheel bearing to go.

Open the boot and re-secure the duct tape over the bound hooker's mouth.

Bus and train this morning. Could seriously have killed someone if they had looked at me the wrong way. Soaking wet, freezing, almost £20 in fares.

On the plus side, managed to get it booked in on Wednesday instead and I can hopefully work from home tomorrow.

Spanish friends of my sister and brother-in-law had something like this happen. They were up in the Pyrenees for a few days one winter. When it was time for them to return home, they packed-up and set off. After driving for a while they started hearing strange noises coming from the engine, so they pulled over to see what the problem was. They opened the car bonnet and were confronted with the sight of a terrified puppy cowering within the engine compartment - they reckoned that it must have climbed-up into there sometime during the night or early morning in search of some residual warmth.

Appropriately, it was a Pyrenean Mountain Dog puppy!

They took it home with them and adopted it as their pet. Sadly, some years later, it ended-up being killed...

it was hit by a car.   :ermm:

Looking for some advice.

Took an 18 plate car out on a PCP deal about 3 months ago. Since getting the car I have done just over 1000 miles in it, - it has about 22k miles on the clock with Glasgow and back being the furthest I’ve been.

Problems I’ve had are:

- all tyres needing air frequently

- car struggling to start

- Engine management light on restricting power to 25mph (this happened on M8)

the car is in the garage now and they are telling me there is nothing on the diagnostics to say there is anything wrong with the car. The battery seems fine and “needs time to recharge”. They are trying to persuade me to price up a new battery and are also telling me I need 4 new tyres at £110 a pop.

Anyone know what sort of options I have here? Can I demand an exchange of car, anything.

Help pls.

4 new tyres because of the air issue or tread depth? You’d have thought they would check for a puncture and put a sealer around the wheels then have you run the car for abit to see if that fixed the issue before recommending tyres all round.

Im surprised they have said there is nothing on the diagnostics especially with the EML being on.

One was poorly plugged and now they’re saying they don’t want me to put an odd tyre on for wear issue.

I’m concerned about the EML as it has been going on and off infrequently and typically hasn’t when they’ve had it.

The fact that the EML light does come on should dictate that what ever the cause of that is logged in the car and diagnostics if done correctly should be able to identify the issue from error code(s).

I would take the car to a good independent specialist and have them diagnose the fault. You may have to pay a initial diagnostics fee though - would estimate roughly £75 for this. You may have a fight on your hands in terms of recourse on costs however from the Garage that you purchased the car from.

what type of car do you have as some have a convoluted method that can give the error code that you could google for an initial idea

I had a similar problem with the EML coming on last year. The garage I took it to couldn't find anything on the diagnostic check, and from what they were saying about just trying to replace certain parts and seeing if that fixed it (at great expense) it was clear to me they didn't really have a clue.

I ended up taking it through to a specialist garage for the make through in Glasgow and they recognised and diagnosed it immediately from having had it happen before for the make. It turned out that a standard air filter was fitted at the last service, and not the make specific one it needed to be, causing the EML to come on due to reduced air flow when the turbo kicked in. A new air filter and all was good.

Long story short, I would try to get a second opinion from another garage, specifically one that has experience with the make of your car (if the one you've tried already isn't make specific).

Edit - what Milky_26 said as well, I googled the issue and found what it ended up being before I took to the other garage for them to confirm

Take it to a car dealer that specialises in that type of vehicle……I.e.    if it’s a ford take it to a ford garage……25mph is not good on the motorway……….this small fault could turn into a very major fault…….💡pay for a years warranty…….report the fault in a couple of weeks after the warranty has started 🏴‍☠️

Appreciate the comments.

Realise I have a fight on my hands due to the EML not showing on their diagnostics check at all. The computer that allegedly stores all the faults hasn’t found any hint of it in the slightest. This is what concerns me.

I know nothing about cars but I'm guessing it's not as simple as a hole in the exhaust pipe?

In the midst of selling my car and it's just developed a problem where it's difficult to get it into first or 2nd gear. Anything higher is fine but it's proving a nightmare driving in town. No grinding noise or anything else.

Can't mind what that is.

It's not serious though.

Give the accelerater a slight rev while changing gear.

If its any consolation my motors needing a few things done.

I'm looking at it thinking I fix you and then I have to fill you .

I have the work motor so I'm lucky I don't have to fix it out of necessity.

Not much help bud sorry.

I had that issue a few years ago and it turned it was just the engine mount bushes needed replaced so the engine and gearbox were slightly off from each other so the clutch wasn’t totally lining up. Cheap fix.

Make and model would help, also does it have stop/start. Some of the Citroen models had a similar fault to yours, new correct battery and a reflash" update of car electronic control modules" solved it, basically the ECU was overcharging the battery and cooking the internals. Modern cars store fault codes,so garage can't use or have a decent diagnostic machine. As for tyres I would seek a second opinion,BMW 19 inch wheels are prone to cracking and loose air due to the state of our roads coupled with low profile tyres

Hydraulic clutch? Might need a bleed to get air out of system, try pumping clutch a few times before selecting 1st,if it goes into gear easily, bleed system through🧐
