Saddest (or most poignant) song you know?

Cats in the Cradle by Harry Chapin.

Never let your work get in the way of spending time with your children. They're only young for a wee while.

I've had jobs that were a challenge to my free time, but I always spent as much time as I could with my boys. Bonding sessions watching Hearts being the number one priority.

I'd have hated to be like the man in that song.

That would be another of mine. That and Father & Son by Cat Stevens; not the version that got mangled by WestZone.

This one for sure. Knowing how much Chester supported other sufferers and was so open and honest about his own struggles makes it so much more tragic that he succumbed to his own demons.

Couldn't have put that better myself but exactly what I was thinking.

Excellent choice. Made me think of Floating in the Forth by Frightened Rabbit.

That's another good shout. Both symbolic of what was to come sadly 🙁

All Around the World - Lisa Stansfield

Lost a good friend at 23 and this was getting a lot of airplay at the time.

Memories come flooding back every time I hear it.

Eva Cassidy's "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" always gets to me.

What a voice that lassie had.

Judy sang it better really . No one can sing it as well as her. She sang it at every concert she did . However Cassidy version is a decent attempt.

This really is a beautiful song with a full tragic story in it. Struggle to listen to it at times as reminds me of someone close who this song could have easily been written about. Sadly died of an addiction.

An ex told me that Fade Into You by Mazzy Star always reminded her of me as I listened to it so often. Then she added “especially the lyrics”.
Ouch.

Салатные палочки

Both written by Phil Coulter. But no better person to sing them than Luke Kelly.

This one is particularly sad as Coulter wrote it about his own experiences with his son who was down syndrome.

This has a dance beat but the lyrics are very deep. Elena Tonra from the band Daughter.

y deep and sad. Elena Tonra is normally known from her other band Daughter.

Is that song not about a guy reminiscing before he kills himself?

Love me a bit of Springsteen but the emotional ones for me are Streets of Philadelphia (a very fitting song for the film) and, more so, 41 Shots, especially where the mother is getting her kid ready for school and has to tell him how to behave if an officer stops him. "Be polite and keep your hands in sight."

Hes  no called " the boss" for nowt.  I find " the river" quite moving really , about accepting less in life.

Malinga the Swinga

Very difficult.

Fire Away by Chris Stapleton. I'm not a country lover, but this one is different.

Hurt is a classic, by either Cash (my choice) or Nine Inch Nails.

As an outsider, Monsters by James Blunt or Nothing Compares 2 U by Sinead O'Connor.

Slightly unusual one here, but Skywest and Crooked by Carter USM, particularly for the  spoken word part at the end by Ian Dury doing the bit from The Man of La Mancha. Gets me every time.

"I have lived almost 50 years, and I've seen life as it is. Pain, misery, hunger, cruelty beyond belief. I've heard the singing in the taverns, and the moans from bundles of filth in the street. I've been a soldier, and watched my comrades fall in battle, or die more slowly under the lash in Africa. I've held them in my arms at the final moment. These were men who saw life as it is, yet they died despairing. No glory, no gallant last words, only their eyes filled with confusion, whimpering the question... "Why?" I do not think they asked why they were dying, but why they had ever lived"

Also, been mentioned already, but Johnny Cash's version of Hurt never fails to bring a tear to the eye.

Gloomy Sunday.  There’s been loads of versions - some have added a “Bobby in the shower” last verse to make it a bit less bleak.

Here’s Sinead O’Connor’s version…

Statts1976uk

For me it's James and Coming Home Pt 2.

It's about how much he misses his son as he has to go record and tour away from home for weeks. When it was released I was a bit down as I had been working away from home for a fair while and it just reassured me I wasn't the only one.

The upside was that the day it was released I got a job offer much closer to home and could see the end in sight. I was a bit sad and tweeted the lead singer Tim Booth not expecting a reply but I got a really lovely message back.

All roads lead to Gorgie

I'm not sure this song is all that sad but it certainly has a melancholic feel in my opinion.
