Just for very personal reasons, I’d like to throw in Daniel by Elton John.

Lone Striker

Yesterday by the Beatles  .... also Eleanor Rigby.   Astonishingly perceptive & emotional  lyrics considering the Fab Four were in their early 20s at the time

Jolene by Dolly Parton

The Living Years by Mike & the Mechanics

Hard to hear a song that reminds you of a certain place, time or person. My Matchbox 20 selection above was in relation to a recently departed from this earth soul.

Well in that frame of mind I’ll throw this one in. Will always remind me of losing one of the best people that ever happened to me far too young. The words were perfect at the time and helped me grieve.

It’s amazing that a song can bring back a particular memory right away as soon as you hear it , happy or sad .

I hadn’t really heard of it until a friend of mine ( another Jambo ) introduced it to me when we got home after a piss up and had you tube music on ! He would sing all the lyrics to it ! And quite well

been here before

Tank Park Salute by Billy Bragg.

About losing his own dad, sung from a wee boys perspective, most of the things he mentions in the song I do or have done with my own 2 boys.

Gets me every time.

This one for sure. Knowing how much Chester supported other sufferers and was so open and honest about his own struggles makes it so much more tragic that he succumbed to his own demons.

I P Knightley

I've got a few so please indulge me.

First up is Ruby's Arms by Tom Waits. I don't know why he feels he has to leave that relationship. He clearly knows he'll break her heart and Curses the fact that he'll never kiss her lips again. All kicked off by the most mournful brass ensemble.

He's dying, isn't he?

My other Tom Waits one is Kentucky Avenue; a wistful recollection of a childhood larks with a best pal who you know will be pals for life. It's only after 3 and a half minutes recounting tales of winding him up that a fire truck is rushing to his house; of breaking windows in an abandoned house or rubbing berries in each other's faces that Tom reveals his one frustration: that his best pal for life is wheelchair bound and that yound Tom dreams more than anything of getting his chum of his affliction.

I've listened to it a hundred times and every time...

Then there's Pearl Jam with EdVed singing to a loved one on his or her death bed. It's me beside my dad, wondering whether he knew how much I loved him and how little I was ready to let him go.

Hug your kids, people.

Last one (for now) is from one of EdVed's close pals, Simon Townshend. Its maybe appropriate for mental health awareness week to hear intimate stories of folk struggling with addiction or depression. A bit like Hurt but a bit closer to home.

Cats in the Cradle by Harry Chapin.

Never let your work get in the way of spending time with your children. They're only young for a wee while.

I've had jobs that were a challenge to my free time, but I always spent as much time as I could with my boys. Bonding sessions watching Hearts being the number one priority.

I'd have hated to be like the man in that song.
