OF aside everyone else is still contesting 4th place. Hearts are the only side in the top 6 who already know their end position. Does this mean everyone else will be more motivated?

FFS I dont even remember this thread started last night.

Might be my fault. Seem to recall chivvying you along to get it going, having been aware of a direct correlation between you starting the matchday thread and us not losing. And it would be great to keep a little bit of momentum going over the next few weeks.

Now is the time to start trying different formations out. Chuck Sibbick back in midfield and see if he improves, put Boyce at RB for all I care. We're not moving from 3rd so we've got a unique opportunity to test these formations out against decent sides.

I'll take any win right now but I'll take any loss as well if it means we've learned something for next season (or the final if it's against Rangers).

Sunday Games are for big team  winners

Saturday Games are for wee team losers

Who cares, if Robbie fancies a run out at full back then crack on, big JiG up front and Ann Budge in goal!

Professional pride says we should still try and win our remaining fixtures whilst utilising the bench and maybe a couple of younger players

Correct. Losing our last five matches isn’t going to do anything for player or supporter confidence.

Considering Utd tried to kick us off the park last time - What is it with the teams in this league, I thought we were supposed to be the cloggers :D , I'd be happy to see Robbie try something a bit different.

Gordon

Atkinson Moore Kingsley Cochrane

Devlin Sibbick

GMS McEneff Gino

Simms

Try and rotate in a few players and give Haring, McKay and Boyce a rest

Pretty much this for me but depending on how Kingsley is then I'd consider dropping Sibbick and McEneff back one and giving Woodburn a go too.

A decent rest after two big derby matches and then start to ramp up against towards the final.

Happy days!

I quite like that. Still plenty quality and attacking intent in that side. Would maybe switch McEneff wide and put GMS more central but maybe not.

Why? What does it matter at this point?

These are effectively friendlies.

Kingsley, Simms, Devlin, Haring,Boyce and McKay need wrapped in cotton wool.

Give them this one as a rest then give an hour here or there until the final. The rest can prove the are worth a place.

My worry is that a run of losses sets in and we get into a rut. Remember the poppadom hand effect upon the team.

I suppose, but the alternative is that some critical player like Kingsley or Devlin or Simms picks up a 3 month injury in a match against Ross County that means absolutely nothing. The last United game was utterly brutal on the squad.

We can't rest everyone completely or else they'll go off game fitness, and it's not a good idea to throw a bunch of youth out with no team regulars around them, but also asking players to maintain the same level of dedication for games that mean nothing also seems like asking for discouragement to set in.

Play some reserves and set team goals that aren't winning for each game, whether that's limiting RCC, getting shots on goal, developing midfield creativity, whatever. Then evaluate the team on that.

This. Great post.

This was my initial thoughts. Should we in the 3 shite games let our sub bench players play and bring in the cream of the kids to get first game for big team. Rest up first team players. The kids will surely have more to prove. We know we will finish third regardless so no big deal? Just play full team and beat the arse cheeks to mess up eos. Be funny if we beat Celtic say and then one of the bottom teams draw with Celtic. Haha. Revenge for 86. Bliss.

Ironically while all of those below would swap places in a heartbeat it turns out it does have a down side so to speak. A string of defeats obviously isn't good for simply consistency if nothing else.

But in saying that these sides really do have something to play for, all 5 of them. All below 3rd see potential millions of income for snatching that 4th spot. The OF are contesting an automatic Champions League group spot.

They, all of them, will be ready to get down and dirty and potentially hurt for every last point they can capture. While for Hearts the league games are meaningless from a points perspective.

Will Hearts players be willing to fight as if their season depended on it as it does for these others? Are they likely to have in their head i'm not going to chance getting hurt for these points when there's an actual prize game coming up?

Would you even want them to?

I'd definitely give game time to Moore, Woodburn, McEneff, Ginnelly and GMS and ask them to show them something. Smith and Souttar as well if they're back.

This.

Be good to see some of the fringe players get a chance to prove themselves. If they can’t perform with the carrot of a cup final dangling in front of them, then it pretty much tells us something.

No chance will we see Souttar or Smith though.

Get folk saying not bothered as practically friendlies etc. but hope we still get big numbers going, in particular for the 2 home games of course. Would be great to go into the Final on the back of a couple full houses!

Also, for what it's worth I'd rather Dundee Utd finish 6th so hope we pump them Sunday

McEnneff badly needs game time. He was like a rabbit in the headlights when he first came on on Saturday. I'd be starting him. It also looks like Sibbit will start at CB in the final so he needs a run of games there.

£28 is a tad pricey don't you think?

Big clubs are probably classed as Cat. 1 games. There's only three big clubs in the league.

Given that Halkett & Soutar are both likely out for the final we need to start bedding in our defence for the final. That means giving Sibbick and Moore as much time together to work out their roles. Whether we play a four or wingbacks I think it's vital we play them both and build a rapport. By all means give fringe players and youngsters some game time but not in defence.

Souttar back in training and ready to start running next week according to Robbie.  Halkett to see another specialist for assessment, so his participation is very much in the balance.

Anyone get this rather cheeky message after ordering their tickets on the Dundee UTD website.

"Your order has been successfully processed. Please download your tickets today in a PDF. A copy of your tickets have been emailed to you should you wish to print at a later stage. If you do not receive your email please check your Spam/Junk box.

"Thank you for your custom and we look forward to welcoming you on the day to Tannadice Park to see Dundee United."

:naughty:

The squad will be used to the full for the next five games but that doesn't mean wholesale changes every week

Bazzas right boot

A string of defeats as we rest players, get some fit and play some youth and prepare for the final will have no effect on the team for the final.

Completely different to playing to stay in the league, busting a gut and still getting beat as you spiral.

The players will know the difference one is planned and one is just utterly shite and depressing and effects confidence.

Some fringe or youth guys are also likely to try harder to impress.

It's a balance, but we should and imo will rest players if not Tommorrow the next few games.

Robbie can play himself at RB if he wants.

Utd and Motherwell are pretty brutal teams, losing kingsley, Simms, Boyce, McKay  as they compete with a 50/50 with the likes of Butcher in a nothing game is the stuff of nightmares.

We've seen how easy it is to lose 3 players to injury in 1 game, we don't want that.

Keep players fit, get others fit, give some seniors and youth a chance while resting some key players is perfectly sensible.

Try to win but don't break a leg in trying to do so.

Levein kinda gave up on the split games in 2019 and almost won the cup. Would take the same this time round although would really like to see them go for it at Celtic Park no matter who is in the starting lineup.
