I'll try again.

Does anyone know if Gas Central Heating is safe to run if the water supply is cut off at the mains?

Thanks

Not qualified in the matter but I do have to occasionally top up my central heating to keep the pressure at a good level.

So from that, I'd guess it's absolutely fine as the fresh water supply is only needed to top it up rather than being actively drawn from.

No water means it won’t run. I’d assume sone sort of safety switch off will kick in.

That has kind of put our minds at rest.

We couldn't find a definitive answer on Google.

Is it a sealed system or an open vented system?

Haven’t got a clue!

Can you put that into simpler terms for me please?

The above system is fed by a feed and expansion tank (cistern)  usually in the attic but certainly at the highest point of the system. The tank has a ball cock which keeps the system topped up with water automaticity.

The above system has no Feed and expansion tank and is sealed to the atmosphere. Water top up is manual via a filling loop connected to the mains water supply. It Will have a pressure gauge that will register 1 bar pressure under normal working conditions. Some are fitted with pressure switches or flow switches which will cut the power and prevent the boiler from running.

Righto, that’s magic, Danny.

I’m pretty certain now that it’s the top diagram that you have sent me.

The water was cut last Sunday afternoon and, to date, we have heard of no problem.

It was a concern because we are here (in France) and the house is there (in Edinburgh).

I very much appreciate your answers, thanks a lot.

Nothing wrong with it, Harry.

The house in Edinburgh has been empty since the beginning of November. It's now up for sale. The Solicitors turned the water off without realising that the heating was still on a timer.  We have just been a wee bit concerned that all was ok.

So far, so good though.

Thanks for your reply.

I didn't even know that there was such a thing as a 'link' function.  I suppose I should have just added today's thread to the old one.

Sorry, tried to send this message a while ago but marital affairs interrupted things.

No bother, Soops.  👍

I just wasn’t sure if you were being nippy, or smart.

It’s usually quite fun in my house when ‘marital affairs’ get in the way of important things.
