OK, had some free time today so here's my definitive list of first team quality (at least value) players who are available at the end of the season. Some have only gone down to a certain market value so there'll be lots more out there who are valued lower.

Who're we huvin?

Can I just be the first to say that I'm extremely concerned that we're less than 7 months from the window closing and we've still not signed anyone yet?  What are Savage and Neilson doing?

Asleep on the job as usual, Robbie must go and he can take Savage with him.

GMS and Gino will be kept on. Remove right and left midfielder. We will keep one of the loan players. Will be central midfielder, not attacking.

We need better than those two if we are going to improve.

Only loan player looking likely to be worth keeping is Simms and Everton might need him in their Championship squad next season.

We will get improvements.  But will keep them. Try to not make to many changes. Expecting 4/5 players of real quality.

Don't know if it's been posted but Jamie Walker is interested in a one year deal to stay at Hearts. Personally I would take him and don't think Robbie has been fair to him.

Yep. Imo he can do anything Woodburn can do. And that's without trying very hard.

Walkers capable of the odd game where he’s brilliant but is largely an absolute passenger especially in big games, would hope we’re setting our aims higher than him

I think most folk were convinced we had aimed high we we brought Woodburn in. Sometimes when you aim high the target is easier to miss. IMO Woodburn was a mistake,an expensive one wage wise, so we learn from our mistakes I hope and move on.

If Walker couldn’t get much game time this season he’s living on another planet if he thinks we’ll be offering him a new deal.

When I read that article yesterday I kinda got the feeling he really wants to stay because it’s convenient for him.

I just copied over the whole list. I didn't have that much time that I could look into what everyone earns and filter out. Even if I did, I have no idea what any of these players might be asking for. Many high earners will need to take big cuts to find new clubs. Nor do I know what our budget is, so it's not for me to decide who we can and can't afford.

People can discuss for themselves what they think of certain individuals from the lists. That's the point.

I've wasted more time replying to you than it took me to copy paste and post that list 😂

With FIFA allowing Russian based players to get out of their contract, does that allow them to play for another team before the next window?

Either way, it could be a decent market to pick up some players desperate to leave the country and get guaranteed European football in a stable country.

I think you have to be out of contract before the last window shuts, which must be illegal in the real world.
As for Russian players I feel sorry for them if they’re against the invasion but I can’t see Budge allowing us to sign any, the criticism would be huge for us and we can do without it.

Learned yesterday that anyone who does become a free agent outwith a transfer window won't be able to register to play for a new club until the next window opens. So if anyone does cancel their contracts, they can't play for another team until the end of the season basically.

If everyone on loan and out of contract leaves we will need 2 CHs, 1 LB/LWB, 1 CM, 2 strikers and at least one wide player. Possibly another GK too. That’s 8 players without making the squad bigger.

The last one I remember it happening with was Tony Watt just before the first lockdown when he was released in February by CSKA Sofia but couldn’t sign for Motherwell until the summer of 2020. That’s restriction of trade and must be illegal.

I was not overly keen on Halliday getting an extension either but he has proved his worth over a number of positions recently and as long as he is happy to be a utility player then may be he will prove a good renewal.

They can sign for a new club - either officially or in principle - but can't register to play for them. Clubs won't pay them to do sit and do nothing though, so will likely wait until the window opens before officially completing the deal.

Its a clear FIFA rule, so definitely not illegal, and definitely not restriction of trade.

Halliday's deal has been extended because he can cover just about any outfield position on the pitch at a competent enough level. Nothing to do with his face fitting in better than Walker's - he just offers more to the team.

You could say the same about Walker, can play anywhere up front or midfield if given the opportunity, wasn’t given the chance.

He can cover a lot of positions, but isn’t any good in any of them. Walker can play anywhere from midfield forward, his face and McEnffs doesn’t fit so don’t get a chance and doesn’t open their mouth and give information about the clubs injury situation like Halliday did last night.

FIFA don’t make laws, none of their rules are legality binding in the real world. Bosman proved this and not allowing someone to play football and make a living is the very distinction of restriction of trade.

I'd say Walker, McEneff and Halliday all have about the same level of ability, but Halliday offers much more to the team because he can play anywhere those two can, and more. Its been a choice between the three of them IMO, and Halliday's versatility means he won.

I think Walker and McEneff offer far more going forward, Halliday more a defensive option wherever he plays. Wonder why he’s favoured more 🤔🤷🏾‍♂️

I do not think you can say that though do we know he would have been good as a striker for example he might have been but we do not know. We do know that he was no longer mobile enough to be an out and out winger and that he often did not do enough when played as a ten

You think Halliday is mobile enough to play there, or anywhere if that’s an issue? Neither are quick, one has the ability to change a game off the bench whereas the other can get sent off or play right back for ten minutes.
Hopefully the rest of the signings this summer put Halliday where he should be, up in the stand, but as he’s the managers blue eyed boy unfortunately that’s unlikely.

I do not agree that this is the reason he was re signed but as I am not his biggest fan I am not going to keep defending the guy when I already said I did not think he should have been given an extension. Nothing to do with his face or eyes though.

Fair enough, I think we agree he shouldn’t have been given a contract and the reason was because of his versatility. Where we differ is I think he’s given opportunities ahead of others more suited to the job, last season in midfield and this further forward, for no other reason than he’s one of the managers solo signings.
