Russia Invades Ukraine

Greenbank2

Recommended Posts

Is Russia really about to invade Ukraine or is this simply Johnson's latest effort to deflect attention away from his own monumental inability to demonstrate any kind of leadership?

USA needs to up the ante on its "enemies" to distract from their own economic mess (and allow grandpa Joe some breathing space for afternoon naps) - and expects its lapdogs to follow suit (UK will, Germany won't)

NATO in Ukraine is exactly the same as USSR in Cuba in 1963. What did/do they expect?

Easter European nations make overtures to the EU and NATO because their populations have looked west for years thinking "I'll have some of that". And when they do, what the west gets is increased demands for financial support, economic and criminal migrants, loss of jobs to low paid labour and the rise of right wing nationalism in these former eastern bloc countries.

So why should WE care what happens in Ukraine? This is about the west picking fights and Putin trying to show he's a big swinging dick. And Johnson trying to distract from his own lies.

Our resident comrades won’t know who to side with in this one !

the original borders should have taken account that large areas in Ukraine wanted to remain Russian and consider themselves to be  Russian . 13000 have died in the ongoing internal civil war aided by Russia on one side and the West on the other .

Its not the Tories fault unless you are Jimmy Krankie of course then it will be.

NATO is arming itself against Vladimir Putin (69)!

The situation in the Ukraine conflict is getting worse and worse: In response to the threat of an invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops, several NATO countries are increasing their military presence in Eastern Europe.

NATO spokeswoman Oana Lungescu (63) tweeted a list of states offering support on Monday morning:

  • Denmark wants to deliver F-16 jets to Lithuania
  • France sends troops to Romania
  • The Netherlands to base F-35 jets in Bulgaria
  • A Spanish frigate could make its way to the Black Sea.

This means that Denmark, Spain and the Netherlands want to increase their military presence in Eastern Europe, and the USA and France are therefore considering this.

I imagine the build up in forces is only natural as covid restrictions relax further.

More operators can be in tanks...soldiers can march closer together......less necessity to wipe down field guns between each shot.

Great that the pandemic easing means we can have a wee war.

Which original borders are you taking about?  Ukraine has been sliced and diced throughout history, with Russia, Poland, Moldova, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman (Turkey) all having held or are still holding territory.

IMO Putin is intent on rebuilding the former Soviet Union. He already has influence in the four "......Stan" states, Belarus and annexed Crimea.  Troop build ups on the borders of Ukraine and the Baltic states are not coincidental.

Other than bumping his gums, Johnson has nothing to offer this 'conflict'

His presser today was all about how 'Global Britain' was leading the world on what sanctions we'd be imposing.

Putin will be pishing himself.

He turn the gas taps off and the UK grinds to a halt inside a fortnight.

Militarily Britain couldn't break up a fight in a boozer.

We have 215 thermonuclear warheads ready to go at any time. 6 nuclear submarines. Pretty sure we could inflict some considerable damage.

West only have themselves to blame. Expanding NATO till it was on Russian border was never a smart move. We don't give shit about Ukraine, Crimea or any of these countries.

If you continually poke a bear, whose fault is it if the bear gets pissed and pokes back a lot harder.

It's not just about territory, it's about Ukraine holding 1% of the global gas reserves and the 2nd largest reserves in Europe. That's why Putin had his man installed and now moves in, militarily, after the Ukrainians - with help/interference* from Obama/Biden deposed his man, which is why Hunter Biden was in the Ukraine (not what Guilliani claimed but you wouldn't believe him if he said the sky was blue at this point).

I assume the western aid into Russia has either stopped or Moscow is happy to be a puppet of China who want their gas and likely the Ukrainian gas too (China gave them $36 billion in the last 12 years in aid flowing from China).

Johnson will only talk a big game, he's a prime candidate to have been bought off just like Trump was.

Russia have about 2000 warheads. If we lauch any of ours they will obliterate us.

It's over 6000 they have.

That's the weird thing. How can anyone countenance the use of nuclear weapons? Impossible. So why bother having them? The accepted rationale is deterrent so I doubt they would be used over Ukraine.

The UK gets less than 5% of our gas from Russia, almost half of our supply is from our own fields in the North Sea and around about 30% from Norway.  If Russia turned the taps off it's Germany that would grind to a halt, followed by the rest of the EU shortly afterwards.

If there is a war, hopefully it is by conventional means.

Indeed  you just need to scratch the surface.

Oliver Stone provides a helpful perspective in understanding how complicit  the West is in building tension.

Looks like Norway’s gas will be in high demand.  I wonder how much it’ll cost?

We need to get stuck into the North Sea and start extracting own gas to elevate the pressure. Yes rely on renewables but it will become needs must

and that time in now.

He said we are a small little nation unable to break up a fight in a boozer. However this small weak little nation has enough Nuclear Arsenal to **** things up big style.

Like you say it is all a deterrent and not really relevant to this thread. However to his particular post our military might isn’t exactly small. We have a well trained, decent sized army, excellent Navy and a well equipped RAF. We have plenty fire power to defend and if need be put up a good fight.

Not sure about these bits - 70k is a small army.

The Navy has 2 aircraft carriers but not enough ships to screen them, and the planes don't appear to be working too well...

I think the OP has hit the nail on the head.   Boris Johnson has phoned his good mate Putin and asked him to amass 0ver 100,00 troops with tanks, artillery etc on the border with Ukraine to take the heat of him with partygate, etc.   Seems to be working a treat as all we see on the news is Ukraine, Ukraine and nowt about Boris.

Correct. The UK is far less reliant on Russian gas than Germany and most of the EU despite the hopes of  alarmist UK haters on here.

Which explains why Germany is appeasing Putin while we are at least making a show of resistance.  Germany did not even allow us to use their airspace to fly military equipment into Ukraine for fear of offending Putin.

Google says they have 900k regulars and 2m reservists. I remember being at tank museum in Belarus on the old WW2 defensive lines near Minsk and watching Belarussian soldiers practicing hand-to-hand combat. They were seriously tough looking hombres...Wouldn't want to be one of the fatties from Redford or Dreghorn having to face those lads one-on-on whilst defending the Asda McDonalds...Need to get them from a distance!

I watched a video on YouTube about the Russian military and seemingly while the new equipment is very good the bulk of there equipment is soviet era shit that they can't afford to replace, so out they 4000 tanks maybe only 1000 are able to match up to the Challanger and abrams. If there's a war it will come down to who has the best supply lines.

Google says Russia has 23k tanks in total though.

We only have 227 Challenger tanks and they were described as ageing last year. Only 148 to be upgraded to Challenger 3...

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-shropshire-57025266#:~:text=The British Army has 227,digital turret and smoothbore gun.

I think we'd get steamrollered before the 9k Abrams could get across the Atlantic...

FWIW I don't think there will be a war or major conflict so the numbers of boots on the ground or tanks or jets will hopefully be irrelevant.

Putin has stirred the pot and will more than likely get what he's after and the UK can go back to puffing its chest out telling everyone it would have done them likesy.

I’m no fan of Putin but no-one likes an opposing alliance moving into their ‘sphere of influence’. The Cuban missile crisis might have been 60 years ago but I doubt Uncle Sam would be quiet if something similar happened in the Americas again.

It is indeed. Putin attempting to make a massive land grab, destabilising not only the whole of eastern Europe but the rest of the world in the process, and it's all the West's fault. However, in a way it is, but only because we let him waltz into Crimea and, with the exception of a few meaningless sanctions, showed him how much we are unwilling to back up our threats with action. No wonder he think he can up the stakes now and waltz into Ukraine.

Yeo. NATO has done nothing other than show bravado to help Ukraine. Putin knows we or nobody will do anything serious to stop Russia.

Same with North Korea. So long as China are happy with them acting like ***** and protecting them then the west will stand back and watch as the atrocities keep happening there.
