Aye, Pele said Africa would have a WC winner before 2000.

No idea what he based that on.

Cameroon's one half decent showing at one WC????

It’s based on the fact Pele will say anything to make people like him. He’s made some dreadful football judgements over the years praising teams.

He's playing tonight, maybe he fancies his chances...

Africa has produced 3 World Cup quarter-finalists since 1930.

Europe has produced 100.

South America has produced 35.

North/Central America has produced 5.

Asia has produced 2.

Then a few minutes later a shot cleared off the line.

Aye that was something else.   The keeper completely missed it.    Lucky his defence know what he's like 😂.    Great stop.

Another missed chance for Guinea with a header.

I always wondered about the side effects of that wee blue tab called Viagra that he he promoted, it might have done wonders for your 'old John Thomas' but it maybe affected other parts of your brain.

Tbh, if any federation had the funding and personnel to plan a vision for their nation, then I don't see why we couldn't have an African powerhouse.

Big thing I've noticed is the quality of coaching seems to have a big affect. There's no world class African coaches in the game, and even the better teams have a real mixed bag of managers. Egypt, one of the stronger teams on the continent, are managed by Carlos Quieroz.

Great post - I've moaned about this for many years that Europe only get 12 places at the World Cup as FIFA have increased the number of places to other federations to effectively buy votes.  Every Federation should get a certain number of places with 6-12 places based on previous world cups to ensure you get the best teams.

Rewarding past performance with preferential treatment only further reinforces the inequality and closed-shop mentality rife in Football.

We see this in European club competitions, with the same few clubs always at the top, with the competition set up to keep them there.

It's already a thing in the World Cup too, with each confederation being awarded the following slots for the 2022 World Cup.

AFC (Asia): 4 or 5
CAF (Africa): 5
CONCACAF (North, Central America and Caribbean): 3 or 4
CONMEBOL (South America): 4 or 5
OFC (Oceania): 0 or 1
UEFA (Europe): 13
Hosts: 1

Asia and South America play-off for a slot.

Oceania and North America play-off for a slot.

Europe having produced 100 quarter finalists doesn't seem as impressive when you know that European teams make up 40% of the competitors.

South America having 35 QFs is just about the same ratio, given that they only get 5 slots and make up 15% of the starting teams.

If simply used the QF stats to award places, Europe would get 22 slots and the World Cup would just be the Euros plus 7 south american teams and 1 each from Asia, Africa and North America.
Like Eurovision inviting the Auzzies.

That's not interesting.

Majority of players play in Europe/Asia while the list of officials officiate at home.  No clue regarding VAR.   I note that one of the VAR officials comes from Canada.

I gave up following when the referee sent off a player from Ethiopia for "I am not sure what"

Referee blew for full time after 85 minutes.

Game then restarted, and he blew for full time after 89 minutes, after a red card incident and a VAR review which took up most of the time.

:wtf:

Clearly had a grand on Mali to win 1-0.

Off to a cracking start.  All of 1 goal

Well, not cracking, more like a disappointing-yet-totally-expected start.

The referee was also suspended in 2018 by the CAF Disciplinary Board on "suspicion of corruption following the way he handled the CAF Champions League match which Espérance de Tunis won 4–2 in semifinals second leg over Primeiro de Agosto".

Tunisia refused to come back onto the pitch, because there is some rule saying that if 90 minutes aren't completed, the game has to go to a rematch.  So not content with being absolutely atrocious at football for 90 minutes (well, 89), they want to put everyone through it all over again and have their players even more tired for the rest of the group?  Quality idea.

4th Official declared Mali as the winners and the result stands.

How can a professional referee, backed by 3 other assistant referees (one of whom is responsible for keeping an accurate record of what is happening in the game, and displaying time to be added), and even a VAR studio, blow for full time early, be made to restart the game, and then blow early all over again?  It is absolutely incredible that it was allowed to happen, and makes you question the integrity of the refereeing, especially at a major international tournament.

This is why the African Cup of Nations doesn't get "the respect it deserves" because nonsense like this happens and is allowed to happen.  That, and the complete lack of scoring goals, which is sort of the point of playing the game in the first place.

So what's going on with Mauritania v Gambia then?

10 minutes past the kick off time, not started yet, and Sky aren't showing any footage from the stadium, just reruns of Golf, Steven Gerrard stuff, or Brentford v Swindon from about 400 years ago

Delayed for 45 minutes due to the Tunisia v Mali refereeing catastrophe

Didn't realise they were using the same stadium for these games, so that's probably why.

Only caught the last 15 minutes but it was quite bizarre.

85 mins: Ref blows for full time. Tunisia ask WTF he's doing. Ref re-starts game.
86 mins: Ref sends off a Malian player for an innocuous challenge almost on the half way line.
89 mins: Immediately after the red card protests end, ref blows for FT again.

Post-match interviews take place.

CAF order the game to re-start for the missing 5 mins.

Tunisia refuse to take the field.

Result stands.

Next match delayed 45 mins.

"but why does nobody give ACON any respect?"

Third attempt:

"Please rise for the national anthem of Mauritania"

Absolute silence from the PA system.

Another announcement.  One second of the anthem plays.

Outstanding.

I missed the first farce at 85 minutes.    Saw the red card and lost 15 seconds at the end.

Reading your post makes it look like he wanted to arse the game up because he had a wager on Tunisia.

PS. The referees' face at the end was crazy, he was pure :seething:

This.

This is the game that we're going to see a load of goals in.

If I keep saying it for every game, eventually I'll be right (maybe).

Barrow of Bologna gets the assist.   Jallow of Seraing from Belgium scores.

Not bad stock they come from.

Looking at Assan Ceesay as well of Zurich.   They're having a good season.    One of their top scorers.

That refereeing really is amateurish stuff. There had to have been a few minutes of added time due after all that went on in the match so why he's not added it is beyond me. Apparently this referee also officiated matches at the 2018 World Cup, so I'm starting to wonder if this wasn't just down to incompetence.

Read on the BBC that apparently the Tunisia players were already in their ice baths so it was too late to come back out. But that might just be there excuse if they want to replay the match.

Gambia should be 2 up, that's a couple of chances now.  A really good jump and header went wide of the post, keeper wouldn't have got to it if it was on target, and the other header the boy just put his head down and hoped for the best with.

If only they still had a certain Gambian Roberto Carlos :kirk:
