I always wondered about the side effects of that wee blue tab called Viagra that he he promoted, it might have done wonders for your 'old John Thomas' but it maybe affected other parts of your brain. Tbh, if any federation had the funding and personnel to plan a vision for their nation, then I don't see why we couldn't have an African powerhouse. Big thing I've noticed is the quality of coaching seems to have a big affect. There's no world class African coaches in the game, and even the better teams have a real mixed bag of managers. Egypt, one of the stronger teams on the continent, are managed by Carlos Quieroz.

Great post - I've moaned about this for many years that Europe only get 12 places at the World Cup as FIFA have increased the number of places to other federations to effectively buy votes. Every Federation should get a certain number of places with 6-12 places based on previous world cups to ensure you get the best teams. Cade
Rewarding past performance with preferential treatment only further reinforces the inequality and closed-shop mentality rife in Football. We see this in European club competitions, with the same few clubs always at the top, with the competition set up to keep them there. It's already a thing in the World Cup too, with each confederation being awarded the following slots for the 2022 World Cup. AFC (Asia): 4 or 5 CAF (Africa): 5 CONCACAF (North, Central America and Caribbean): 3 or 4 CONMEBOL (South America): 4 or 5 OFC (Oceania): 0 or 1 UEFA (Europe): 13 Hosts: 1 Asia and South America play-off for a slot. Oceania and North America play-off for a slot. Europe having produced 100 quarter finalists doesn't seem as impressive when you know that European teams make up 40% of the competitors. South America having 35 QFs is just about the same ratio, given that they only get 5 slots and make up 15% of the starting teams. If simply used the QF stats to award places, Europe would get 22 slots and the World Cup would just be the Euros plus 7 south american teams and 1 each from Asia, Africa and North America. Like Eurovision inviting the Auzzies. That's not interesting. Edited January 12, 2022 by Cade

The referee was also suspended in 2018 by the CAF Disciplinary Board on "suspicion of corruption following the way he handled the CAF Champions League match which Espérance de Tunis won 4–2 in semifinals second leg over Primeiro de Agosto". Tunisia refused to come back onto the pitch, because there is some rule saying that if 90 minutes aren't completed, the game has to go to a rematch. So not content with being absolutely atrocious at football for 90 minutes (well, 89), they want to put everyone through it all over again and have their players even more tired for the rest of the group? Quality idea. 4th Official declared Mali as the winners and the result stands. How can a professional referee, backed by 3 other assistant referees (one of whom is responsible for keeping an accurate record of what is happening in the game, and displaying time to be added), and even a VAR studio, blow for full time early, be made to restart the game, and then blow early all over again? It is absolutely incredible that it was allowed to happen, and makes you question the integrity of the refereeing, especially at a major international tournament. This is why the African Cup of Nations doesn't get "the respect it deserves" because nonsense like this happens and is allowed to happen. That, and the complete lack of scoring goals, which is sort of the point of playing the game in the first place.

There had to have been a few minutes of added time due after all that went on in the match so why he's not added it is beyond me. Apparently this referee also officiated matches at the 2018 World Cup, so I'm starting to wonder if this wasn't just down to incompetence. Read on the BBC that apparently the Tunisia players were already in their ice baths so it was too late to come back out. But that might just be there excuse if they want to replay the match.
