David Coverdale

Good but started copying Robert Plant, most notably on the 1987 album.

The Coverdale Page album is basically reworked Led Zeppelin songs.

Robert Plant

Tom Jones

Frankie Miller

Graham Bonnet

Dio

Freddie Mercury

Steve Marriot.

In no particular Order although Paul Roger's and Steve Marriot are stand outs IMO.

Took a while for the late, great Steve Marriott to get a mention but glad he did. He had an utterly amazing voice.

Ian Gillan would get in, just ahead of these two .

But behind Glenn Hughes. Ask David Coverdale what it's like when the bass player has better pipes than the singer.

He’s now a raving conspiracy theorist and all round unpleasant nutter, but Van Morrison could sing. Never mind British, he’s one of the all-time greatest voices anywhere.

Robert Palmer and John Martyn haven’t been mentioned. Both exceptional singers.

I honestly can’t think of any British male singers who I would rank as great singers as in technically / vocally great singers . I can’t even think of any classical or opera singers who may fit the criteria . Freddie ,Elton , Tom Jones , et al are what I would call performers  and can put on a show but that’s it .

There is definitely a distinction to be drawn between great singers and great vocalists/performers. Mick Jagger couldn’t and can’t sing to save himself but has a number of great vocal performances to his name. Alex Harvey likewise.

In classical music, there are dozens of singers over the last few decades who would qualify as great. Maybe just not as well-known outside that sphere.

Sawdust Caesar

My top ten faves (rather than the best):

Steve Marriot

Eric Burdon

Chris Farlowe

Reggie King

Joe Cocker

Ian Gillan

Roger Daltrey

Steve Winwood

Long John Baldry

Tom Jones

All of them from pretty much the same era.

Matt Monro. The Man With The Golden Voice.

Wonderful.

His chain of butchers shops were pretty good too.  👍

At long last. Eric Burdon. That's it.

However, I also very much enjoy those that are not that great but take a run and jump at it. One of my favorite examples of this is Mark Almond singing Say hello wave goodbye.

My choice would be Peter Hammill, however, I get how most wouldn't know about him, and if they did, wouldn't get it.

 Here he is.

His singing sounds like a goose trying to strain a particularly hard stool. Great songwriter but one of my favourite albums is called Two Rooms. It celebrates the work of Taupin/Dwight with covers of about 15 of their songs by a range of artists (Kate Bush, Oleta Adams, Hall & Oates, The Who, Dode Michael, Sinead O'Connor, Bon Jovi, Joe Cocker...). Every one of them sounds better than the original.

I could easily come up with 100 British males who are better singers than Elton.

...particularly because it's true.

He sings it with a wee snarly growl too.

Elton and George Michael for me.

With EJ winning by a head.

Elton cannot sing his own songs.

Misses quite a few notes on his live shows.

Great entertainer though.

 Bryan Ferry obvs 😉

Not a technically great singer but brilliant phrasing on what he does, Street Life being a great example.

More of a unique voice but I think a very good singer and his phrasing is/was much copied. Very influential but I would say that! 😁

I like his voice but can also understand why some don’t.

I get that too. His band are one of the most influential of all time which included his voice if you catch my drift 👍
