Just looked at the championship table their anyone from 19th (Bristol City) could end up in those play off positions 7pts separate  6th to 19th crazy.

Bournmounth and Fulham look like they will run away with automatic.

Does the SPFL have such rules? Probably not given the accounts Rangers have been posting since 2012.

The heady days of Frank Lampard's Derby County seem so long ago.

I was listening to talk sport on the way home last week, And their was a Norwich fan on disputing that he never wanted Lampard and what did he do at Derby and Chelsea, A Derby fan then called in and also mentioned his time at Derby saying he done nothing and was overrated. Never signed a player for money but had Mount, Tamori and Harry Wilson on loan. Sounded like bitterness from Derby fan on the radio, And for the Norwich fan no manager could come in at this stage and save them they are terrible. They are a yoyo club up and down and their owners seem to be fine with that.

Lampard came in with Derby 6th in Championship. And after taking them down to 12th got them back to 6th by winning last games of season. Suppose that's progress.

Goldstein came out with I think it will be a risk of Lampard taking the Norwich job the Norwich fan said he thinks Norwich are at risk employing Lampard THEN they got Smith the following day. 😂

Could happen to any EPL club, the bigger they are, the more debt they have and the more at risk they will be. All it takes is a relegation, spunk a fortune on trying to get promoted, doesn't happen and all of a sudden you're financially knackered and heading for League one.

Pretty volatile

8 clubs in League One have played in the EPL

Only 5 clubs in the Championship haven't

They have known this was coming, and even staved off administration to make sure they didn't get relegated last season.

There needs to be harsher punishments for this kind of thing.  They are absolutely ****ed, have lived well outside their means for years, bending the rules to suit themselves, and the teams around them at the bottom of the league last season will rightfully be pissed off at the pressure this put them under needlessly when they could have just gone under a month or two earlier.  The only reason they didn't is for more money!  It also ruins the competition this year, because it effectively means one other team won't get relegated this season when they might deserve to.

Dropping down a league isn't going to do anything and the punishment should be much more severe.  National League at best.

No sympathy for anyone bar the fans. They were very close to a return to the top flight and a cert to go down to the 3rd tier all in the blink of an eye more or less. Shame, never minded Derby.

It was fairly obvious very quickly what Morris had done with the stadium sale (over valued to put more money into club) which is the source of this problem.

Acting quickly would certainly help everyone including the fans.

True. Could never happen to the Old Firm unless the HMRC has been stiffed (again).

Some big clubs in English League 1 Pompey, Sunderland, Sheff Wednesday and Derby next season.

I think Derby should have been in there this season instead of Wycombe

It only delayed the inevitable for Derby but was tough on Wycombe.

Lampard came in pre-season. Derby finished 6th in previous season. As you say, Lampard also finished 6th following strong finish and got them to play off final. Also knocked premier league teams out both of the Cups. So it was progress on previous season.

Interestingly, Wycombe were only in the Championship last season due to fortuitous points per game average taking them from outside to inside play-offs when league suspended due to COVID. Still with 10 games to play.

Derby finished a point above Wycombe, aided by an injury time winner against them few weeks earlier. A game that incidentally Ikpeazu scored at both ends including a cracking OG header. Fine margins.

Progress in terms of the season Derby seriously overspent. To finish the same position in the Championship.

Progress in terms of a memorable play off victory over Leeds which Derby fans can continue to enjoy.

Congratulations Frank. Great work. Hero.

Reading join an impressive list of clubs that have breached FFP and spending above their means desperately trying to reach the land of milk and honey.

Blackburn, Leeds, QPR, Forest, Birmingham, Derby, Wednesday, Wolves, Villa, Bournemouth. Unless you have parachute payments, it appears the only way to get out that league is to gamble big time. The trick is to make sure you succeed. Derby, Forest, Wednesday, Reading, Birmingham failed and the fallouts cripple the clubs for years.

Interesting how the clubs receive varying ‘punishments’. If you believe the SPFL makes it up as it goes along, fill your boots with the EFL.

Never liked them since Clough persuaded Dave Mackay to come to Derby instead of taking the player/managers job at Hearts! ☹️

Portsmouth, Sunderland, Wigan and Bolton can be added to your list.  A lot of clubs in the Championship with crowds comparable to Hearts (give or take 5K) but, wage bills and debt that is completely unsustainable without promotion to the EPL. While they have a better TV deal than us it doesn't paper over many cracks in their finances. Several clubs seem to have sold their stadium recently to generate enough cash to garner promotion and instead crashed and burned. For example , I think, Sheffield Wednesday and Derby.

Saw Wolves in that list their owners are a Chinese Pharmaceutical company the money they have is greater than the likes of Ambramovich so how does that work that they breach them but Chelsea dont?

Chelsea created a massive squad of players with many loaned out to other clubs and had/have a strategy of transfers out equalling transfers in. In recent years they have sold over 20 ‘fringe’ players for circa £200 million. Then add on sales of Hazard, Courtois and Luiz generating £100 million plus.

They did have a transfer embargo in 2019/20 for FFP breach when they brought in Lampard and Jody Morris from Derby to manage and blood a number of youngsters.

I believe that In the Championship, FFP or profit and sustainability as its morphed into has a capped amount of permissible 3 year accumulated losses even if the owner can easily inject cash to cover them.

Overall, Derby owe £65million. Mainly HMRC, paying back a £20m loan, outstanding transfer and agent fees.

They also owe their main fans forum £4k in unpaid advertising.

To add to the mix, Middlesbrough have apparently submitted a £45m compensation claim to the club on basis that if Derby hadn’t been breaking the rules, Boro would have got the play off spot instead in 2019. Wycombe have also apparently claimed compensation of £6m for loss of revenue due to their relegation. Never a dull day.

The Administrators still report serious interest in Derby being bought by new owners. Though £65m plus cost of buying the ground back is fairly eye watering especially with the inevitable relegation looming. Totally going pop is still a distinct possibility.

All because the previous owner, having overseen the train crash waiting to happen, decided to walk away.

There are petitions in play to request that he be stripped of his CBE and Lifetime Achievement Awards. From being a local lad revered and lauded in his home County to being ostracised by the angry mob. Football eh!
