Seems shit has hit the fan fishing in the English chanel if you are registered as a British ship.

France has held hostage a Scottish fishing boat and its looking tasty.

Britain has summoned a French minister for talks.

France has issued an ultimatum.

Another cod war

Game on!!!

The Mighty Thor

just to add some context, some utter helmet phoned into LBC this morning as they were discussing this 'incident' and spewed forth the immortal 'the French should remember that if it wasn't for the British they'd still be speaking German'. in 2021.

Macron playing hard ball with the British plays out well with a lot of French voters.

Long may it continue. Love the French, “Taking Back Control”. It cuts both ways but the hard of thinking have great difficulties grasping that.

How exactly does it cut both ways now the Brexit deal is done?  The French are ruled by Brussels.

Despite their grandstanding for the electorate they will get slapped down.

Copying another poster's post above and editing it to reverse the meaning without even tagging them is childish and pathetic is it not?

The anti-English sentiments on here are a bit ill-thought out as to the consequences that could affect Scottish companies, should the French be allowed to cause disruption.

In any case, this could be a very expensive mistake for France in terms of financial damages should they break their own EU laws.

Jersey had been dragging its heels in awarding fishing licences to French boats.

France impounds the first rule-breaking UK ship it finds.

Jersey instantly approves a big bunch of French licenses.

Daily Mail and Express start screaming, Boris does his wee hard man act.

Ok, just another rabid English-hating nationalist, then who would damage Scotland as long as England suffered.

Was it not more the case that some boats were not eligible, just as some boats from other EU countries are not eligible yet the French throw their toys out the pram?

As long as any French law-breaking is done in a “limited and specific way”, we don’t have a leg to stand on. Remember, we started that law breaking nonsense?

Does the UK not have special relationship with France?

Well, for a start, I'm not a "nationalist" (I do support Scottish Independence however) and - being half-English myself, on my mother's side - I'm certainly not "anti-English". You bash on with your ignorant and ill-founded assumptions however: I'm always up for a laugh!

Come on lads, 30 posts in and nobody has started the puns yet? The Scottish boat was clearly cod in a trap, wrong plaice at the wrong time, the French will end up getting battered. Floundering now so will hand over to you....

Like that one with the USA that was going to get us that mega, mega trade deal that would go a tiny, tiny way towards mitigating our decision to leave the EU. Oh wait…….!

Did we not get slapped down for trying to break the EU agreement, much as France will do?

The French ambassador made it crystal clear that our current fishing dispute has been caused by the U.K. failing to comply with the WA. So whether or not the U.K. was “slapped down”, it has made no difference to our behaviour. That being the case, France should behave in a similar fashion. Once again, the U.K. started this nonsense.

Explain?  Were the boats in question eligible or not - the UK government says they weren't due to the rules on fishing the waters within 4 years (or something on those lines).

And yet on another thread you say you would fight for the UK in a war, make up your mind.

According to Jersey, they say that they have no record of these 55 French boats ever having fished in either Jersey or Guernsey waters.

Some people will believe what Jersey say, whilst other people will believe what the French say.

The truth will most likely be somewhere in between and probably some of this 55 will have a right to fish in Jersey waters, whilst many more are just chancing their luck.

Agreed.

Its just the usual French overreaction that isn't going to help their cause at all.

The issue is that the French want the access they had to all British waters while we were in the EU and think this tantrum will magically give them it.

A guy phoned a radio station tonight and he said the ship was Canadian owned, Flemish crew and the skipper was Scottish as a flag of convenience. It was Talk Radio so might have been some nutter

The boat is owned by a Scottish based company but is registered in the south of England.
