Was the right hand man to McLean at Dundee Utd and Souness at Rangers, a vital part of both their successes.

No surprise he stepped up to the big seat and was successful.

A big loss to Scottish Football. RIP.

What a guy 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

A legend of the game during a period when my love for the game was at its peak, sad news, but I can’t help but smile when I think about him and that era.

A legend of Scottish football, wish his stint in charge of the national team had lasted longer, great memories of that win v France at Hampden. RIP.

Brought a great feeling back to the national team. But he was a Rangers man and the lure of going back there was too much for him.

One of those guys who just loved football, even if it was the wrong team.  I'd love to have 1/10th of the career he had.

Heard about this earlier this morning, he fought a great fight like you’d expect a great man to do. My favourite memory of Walter will always be that interview with Chic Young. RIP

Failed with Scotland? He rose us 70 ranks and beat France at hampden

Close to beating Italy at Hampden in 2005 also finished 1,1

Feels that even though he was 73 he died too young. Will be seen as one of the greatest Scottish managers of all time, would say Rangers run to the final of the Uefa cup was an incredible feat, it wasn't pretty but very effective and was a big case of punching way above your weight.

RIP

I always remember how complimentary he was to us after the Scottish Cup final in 98. Conducted himself with dignity even thought it meant he ended his last season trophy-less.

Indeed, a day I'll never forget. Got home in time to see the highlights and the shots of Smith going daft at the goal spoke volumes.

Sad news.  Despite the feelings I had and continue to have, about his club, I always liked and respected him.

A gentleman.  RIP.

Very sad news. Despite the pain he inflicted on us from a footballing perspective he always came across as an all round good guy, a gentleman and a bloody good manager

RIP

Three things standout for me with Walter Smith.

1. Playing for Dumbarton against us in the 1976 Scottish Cup semi final.

2. Being very magnanimous in defeat after the final in 1998.

3. Along with Ally McCoist being a pallbearer at Tommy Burns funeral.

RIP Walter Smith. Condolences to all his family and friends.

Sad news. A proper football man and a true legend of the Scottish game. Will never forget the pandemonium at Hampden against France, what a night that was.

Best to ignore the troll, he’s getting the bites he wants.
