Hearts took more points off 'the others' than the Old Firm did. Failure to beat either of them in the League (2 draws and 2 defeats to Celtic, 1 draw 3 defeats to Rangers) cost us dear.

Aye.

I remember that at the time.

It wasn't a last day kick in the teeth and, of course, we won the Cup (and Hibs got relegated 😄) but we really could have been champions in 1998.

Still, it will come*.

*I have to keep believing that and always will.

We also drew 3 consecutive home games having been 1-0 in each
Hearts 1 Kilmarnock 1
Hearts 1 Motherwell 1
Hearts 1 St Johnstone 1

We had a really frustrating end to the league season that year. Only 1 win in 6. Including a 2-1 defeat against a really shite (and later relegated) Hibs.

I firmly believe that we could’ve and should’ve, done the double in ‘98.

If we'd reversed 1 game v both celtic and rangers we'd have won the league.

If we'd reversed just  1 defeat to each.... Champions 😬

For context tho, rangers beat us 3-0 and 5-2 at Tynecastle that season.😢

Tommy Coynes equaliser seemed to be the one that really hit if I recall, any chance fell apart from there and the focus became on having players fit for the final. I think Cameron missed a few towards the end of the season after the Motherwell game

Also the champions were only on 74 points, shows the need for  other teams to draw and beat the of to squeeze the table up.

We only had 67 points, for context last season  rangers got 102 and Celtic 77.

You need about 85 points now.

It's a bit shit.

Pretty sure Aberdeen got about 82 points 1 season but we're 2nd by about 12 points. Celtic beat them 4 times that season.

The 1-1 v  Motherwell is the one that stands out for me.

Midweek, a few days after the Ibrox semi v. Falkirk, and 1-0 up. The 2 points dropped that night and the 3 at ER a few days later was the killer for us.

Great team, not a big enough squad.

I actually feel that, squad/bench wise, we're better off this season than then. Add a key player or two in January and who knows?

With the financial backing and the work of the new backroom staff I feel confident we can maintain a challenge.

Back on topic.  5 Celtic players? Battling to stay in the top 6.  Hopeless in Europe.

I doubt if the green brigade would have put any in the top 50.

Furuhasi has only played in half their games as well.

Tbf, he's been excellent for them, and fully deserves to be on that list, at least from what I've seen.  He's the only celtic player that deserves to be on it though.

Yep Motherwell and ER were the killers but I hadn't realised we'd been so bad against the OF that season.

We did manage one win v. them, though and it won us a big shiny Cup. 🏆😊
