Francis Albert

The book is well worth reading not just for the Bobby Walker story but for insight into the early years of professional football in Scotland. Amazing how quickly it grew in just a few decades.

Glad you enjoyed the Book . It does indeed give an insight into  late 1890,s and early 1900,s football much of it in Bobby Walkers own words and from club records of the time. Also how players worked and lived in this era in their local community where they grew up.

On this Day Alexander Walker Hearts passed away .Alexander Walker: Date of Birth: 15th November 1881 at 7 Oliver Terrace, Edinburgh. A 5’6” winger, “Sandy” Walker was signed in April 1899 from Bainfield Athletic. He was a Junior Internationalist and a gas meter maker to trade. In over three seasons playing at Tynecastle, he appeared in 14 senior matches, scoring 3 goals. He also appeared in the reserve team making a total of 48 appearances scoring 14 goals. After leaving Hearts, in May 1903, Alex moved to Motherwell for the 1903/04 season making 19 appearances and scoring one goal. A season later, Alex journeyed down south and joined Brentford FC in September 1904. In his one season at Griffin Park, Brentford’s first at their then new ground, Alex made just 8 Southern League appearances without scoring a goal. A newspaper report from September 1905 mentions that Alex had suffered a severe knee injury while at Brentford. After recovering from this injury, he was looking at returning to Scotland to continue his football career. Bobby Walker owned the Ship Inn at Musselburgh and at the National Census of 1911, Alex was living there with his mother Janet and he was recorded as a barman. Alex joined the Army Reserve in December 1915 and was appointed to the Ninth Reserve Battalion Royal Scots in March 1916. He never left Scotland because he contracted tubercular pleurisy and died on 12 May 1916, at Flora Stevenson’s Military Hospital at Craigleith, Edinburgh and his grave is beside his brother, Bobby and his mother at North Merchiston Cemetery.

One of my favourite photos of Bobby and reflects the adulation he experienced. It wasn’t taken Tynecastle though, but Jedburgh.

One of the most astute bit of business done by the club to preserve the history was the purchase of Bobby Walker's Full Scottish Caps and Scottish League Caps in 1961 from his nephew George Walker. It was an honour to help Davy Allan set up a cabinet with ten of Bobby Walker's caps with the chance to gently handle several on the night the book was officially launched in November 2021 in the Club Museum.

It was great to work with my late Hero Drew Busby on his career story but also up there was helping Colin Robertson put the Iconic Bobby Walker's Story in a long-overdue Book. It was rewarding to hear some of the feedback on the Walker book with one non-Hearts fan (A Scotland national team fan), saying it had an incredible amount of detail and some fantastic images (many unpublished in over 100 years).

Best of all - the proceeds of every copy are donated to the Hearts Heritage Museum to continue to preserve the club history. Maybe if it eventually sells out it will help the museum buy any required memorabilia out there that comes up for sale.
