Should the stockings/socks not be black with maroon & white turnovers ?

Nevertheless Andy has done wonders with his colouring on various Hearts pictures.

Think the photo is 1911/12 when they had Marone stockings Black not introduced until 1913. Difficult as the photo was undated but the style of the jersey indicates 1911/12.

I will check it out on Saturday as the photo is being dropped off at the Museum on Saturday and I will see if either Davy Allan or Davie Speed can date it.

Cheers, was looking at the detail of the stocking in the original image then checked out this marvellous site...

Maybe the site needs updated 👍👍

Born in Edinburgh in January 1879, Bobby is arguably the greatest ever player in Hearts history and one of the greatest ever in Scottish football.  After making his 1st team debut in April 1896, Bobby scored an incredible 266 goals in 655 matches, 33 of them coming in the Edinburgh Derby; a record unsurpassed in Edinburgh Football. Bobby scored Hearts 1000th league goal and was the first Hearts player to score 100 league goals.

Bobby was the first Scotland player to win 25 caps, when he retired his record of 29 caps stood for 20 years, only Kenny Dalglish has held the record for a longer period.

Bobby has been inducted in both the Heart of Midlothian and Scottish Football Hall of Fame.

One of my favourite bits from the Bobby Walker Story came on pages 98/99. It was Bobby's pre-match discussion with the cocksure Celtic Goalie ahead of the Scottish Cup Quarter Final against Celtic in Glasgow in February 1906, and the outcome and commentary when they left the field at the end of the game: -

"A 3-0 victory at Beith in the second round (Walker scoring) set up a mouth-watering quarter final tie with Celtic in Glasgow. The game was scheduled for 24th February 1906 and a massive crowd of 52,000 (the largest crowd to watch Hearts at that time) turned out. Beforehand, Bobby Walker was on the pitch with David Adams the Celtic goalkeeper. Adams remarked, “Ah Bobby, it’s scarcely worth your while examining the ground.”

Walker asked “For why?”.

“Because you’re going to get badly beaten,” said the keeper.

“You never know Davie, you never know,” replied the Hearts man quaintly.

The pitch was hard and heavily sanded due to frost and the ‘Final before the Final’ saw the home side lead 1-0 at half-time.

The second half saw Hearts surge into the attack and Walker equalised from a Wilson pass when he lofted the ball into the postage stamp corner. When he later set up Menzies for the winner, the travelling fans of 5,000 celebrated with sheer delight.

When going off the field, Walker turned to Davie Adams with a twinkle in his eye and said, “You never know Davie, you never know!”

I'd be interested to hear of anyone else's favourite bits from the book?

Below is the match report of the game not used in the book.

My favourite story from the book is Where Bobby Recalls his Childhood being brought up in Gorgie. How He played Football with his pals from morning till night and burst many a Tanner Ba on the Fence around Tynecastle . How he delivered milk to the tenements in Gorgie from Begbie's Dairy for a penny a day with many a short measure being delivered as he really liked milk. How He and his pals jostled to carry the hampers into Tynecastle  so they could see the match for free. A Happy childhood for one of our own.. Hope to see as many of you as possible at the Museum Book signing tomorrow 6.30-8.30.  Official Book Launch of Bobby Walker's Biography - Events - Universe

During My research for the new Bobby Walker Book I discovered that Isaac Begbie was instrumental in the signing of the next Gorgie Legend Bobby Walker. As Bobby was a local Gorgie Boy he was well known by Isaac during his development with Dalry Primrose. He Made sure that Bobby was signed by Hearts secretary at the time George Robertson . He continued to be both Bobby's Mentor and Minder during his early career with Hearts. You can Read all about it in the New Bobby Walker Biography on sale in the Hearts Shop. All Funds Raised are being donated to Hearts Heritage Museum by the Authors. https://www.heartsdirect.co.uk/.../BOBBY-WALKER-THIS-IS...image.png.6df3e461943d3a0f8e4e394fcb4f7978.pngimage.png.f6a04451b1ecad1afbd3441b763b6458.pngimage.png.98b1cff7a68030067a57616f51a96b71.png

Just started this.

Interesting that he seems to have been another great player who was constantly in dispute with the club.

A good observation. There's quite a few stories in the book about how the club continued to retain Bobby's services.

The close season of 1902 stands out with various Directors being rebuffed on the offers made. Secretary George Robertson eventually got him to sign a form as he seemed to be most aware of Walker's worth to the team. The Directors were still huffing about the improved terms offered by Robertson, but their bluff was called at the prospect of losing their star player.

There were no agents in those days and Bobby himself had walked out the boardroom in the summer of 1906, but was called back upstairs as the Board buckled and acceded to his demands in the wake of a supposed interest from Tottenham (which was a false rumour - as revealed by Bobby!)

There are also his observations on the transfer system which are totally scathing.

There are lots of revealing stories in the book. I felt it was like stepping back in time and got a real feel for what was going on. I'd be interested to hear of any more feedback anyone has?

A great christmas present for any Jambo at an excellent price of £15.99 with 330 packed pages in high quality print - last chance to grab one at a home game before Christmas when Hearts face Rangers on Sunday 12th December. Also, the book is well into profit, with any copies sold now contributing directly to the excellent Hearts Heritage and Museum. One of My Favourite Stories from the book is from Early in Bobby's Career when Newcastle United wanted to sign him. His Mother had the final say and despite an offer of £100 for her son to sign (an enormous sum in these Days) she refused and considered it more important that Bobby finished his apprenticeship as a Gas fitter with Alder and Mackie.

Bobby's last appearance at Ibrox when he sustained a serious back injury early in the game and had to leave the field on 21st September 1912. The Hearts ten men were sensational and still managed to beat the original Rangers 4-2.

The picture attached shows Hearts centre forward Lawrence Abrams make an unusual flick on the ball. This picture didn't make it into the book. More images to follow on this game.

We Could have doubled the size of the book with so much that did not make the final edit but had to leave so much on the shelf .The Draft research had over 4000 entries in my original slides. We think we have captured the best but there is so much more we could have filled two books. Another News Photo of Bobby that missed the cut.
