Griffiths just never thinks long enough to help himself. From the Rudi Skacel song to this incident, a wee bit of brain power would tell him not to get involved. It seems he'll never learn.

Having said that, it would be a bit hypocritical of St Johnstone fans saying someone could have been injured. Whoever threw the smoke bomb onto the pitch in the first place could have injured one of his own. Throwing a very hot item over peoples heads is crazy.

I'm going to suggest the guy who threw it was in the front row and that all necessary health and safety precautions were  followed. Let's just concentrate on the Thumb.

The Wrinkly Ninja

Hope if it hit anyone that it was the dick who brought it in, lit it and threw it on the pitch.

I'm sure the fan thought he was picking his phone out of his pocket and got a shock when he discovered it was indeed a live smoke bomb.

He's clearly dropped it on the pitch by accident, or perhaps to save his fellow fans?

No excuse for thumb's behaviour though. Despicable.

I was sitting near the wee girl that day, remember the girl was taken to hospital for suspected concussion I think,

Kirk was  later arrested and  done in the courts for it, mentioned in this article of players convicted for on field 'bad behaviour''  https://www.theguardian.com/football/2006/jan/18/theknowledge.sport

I was sitting just along from the incident as well. I remember immediately thinking that it was clearly deliberate to kick into the crowd as hard as possible in a fit of temper. Deserved to get punished for it.

It would be hypocritical if the fan who threw it was then criticising Griffiths. Nothing hypocritical about other fans in that stand criticising him. Fair to say other fans in the stand have more reason than anyone else to criticise.

Idiotic to throw a flare onto the pitch, even more so to kick it back. He just never thinks before acting... it's been the story of his life so far.

It's okay lads, he's apologised...

Good.

If it did hit someone on the head, the least he can do now is put them onto a decent hair weave company !

It would be more convincing if the statement used words Leigh actually knows.

Let him know there's a decent band called Porno for Pyros.   Got a funny feeling he'd be straight onto YouTube.

Going with the Stevie Kirk defense. Would be a little more convincing if the smoke bomb had been more than 6inches onto the pitch. Good of Dundee to include a photo of the stadium to show quite how far he has had to kick it to get it back into the stand.

You'd think this was an obvious and serious case that would result in a lengthy ban, but being Scottish football and who is involved, it is a lottery whether he'll even be charged.

To be fair, I’m sure he’d think it was a fair swap.

Berra than you

Journalists in this country man. Saying "it's regrettable" is by no means an apology. He's just saying he didn't mean to kick it in to the crowd, albeit you'd have to have been born yesterday to buy that.

May have been running the show until he got injured when someone fairly took the ball first and man second

:greggy:

As part of his "apology" for booting the ball into the wee lassie's face, Kirk magnanimously invited her and her family to a forthcoming Motherwell home game as his guests. They wasted no time whatsoever in telling him where he could ram the tickets.  :icon14:

The children behind the goal think it's fun to throw the flare but how dare anyone try to return it......bleating like sheep in a field.

The village idiots from Perth were out in force and some got the response they wanted

An awful lot of plurals there when it was one person who threw it onto the pitch, what Griffith's did was way more likely to cause injury. Nobody has condoned either act, well until you did anyway.

Thrown onto pitch no where near anyone.

Thrown into crowd of hundreds of people packed closely together.

Stupid thing to do. You don't excuse the throwing of the flare but you can't boot it back into the crowd.  Griffiths doesn't help himself in any way.

That hits someone in then he's looking at serious issues.

Statement from club and Leigh Griffiths

September 23, 2021 / Club

Dundee Football Club and Leigh Griffiths would like to address a regrettable incident which occurred during last night’s Premier Sports Cup tie with St. Johnstone at the Kilmac Stadium.
Following the opening goal a smoke generator, amongst other items, was thrown onto the park by the visiting supporters. This pyrotechnic ended up back in the stand as Leigh kicked it to remove it from the field of play.
Leigh said of the incident, “It was regrettable that the pyrotechnic ended up back in the stand as my intention was just to remove it from the pitch.”
“Having just lost a goal I was eager to get the match restarted as quickly as possible and I would like to apologise for any distress caused by this action.”
The club will be making no further comment on this situation.

Could have flicked it with his boot over the byline like any normal person would have done. Not booted it full pelt about 10 rows high into the stand.

One person throws it onto the grass. Not allowed and likely will be banned if caught.

Griffiths kicks it into a crowded area with a very high chance of hitting someone. Far more serious and he rightly faces a lengthy ban.

Sorry but if I'm sitting behind the goals and a player launches a flare at me you can be damn sure I'll have plenty to say about it. I'm there to watch a game of football not babysit the waines, that's one for the stewards. Culpable and Reckless Conduct as far as I'm concerned.

Someone needs to tell Leigh and Dundee there’s video footage… I know they’re a few centuries behind in the city of discover it’s shite and leave but that defence is as leaky as Pat stantons breeks!

So Make Some Noise..

Wrong un, hibs class, tube, thumb behaviour aside I never fail to facepalm when I see how fickle football fans are.

Tribal, aggressive slurs being hurled out and pure uproar if and when a player responds.

Absolutely wrong to kick something back into the crowd but you can guarantee the same people spouting their shock horror at it were giving it big licks when it was thrown on to the pitch.

Quite appropriate when you think of their song "caught shoplifting ".
