Any Jobs?

Phage

Recommended Posts

Currently unemployed and starting to browse the job market.

I have zero references and was self employed black taxi driver for a long time before the pandemic. So assume I have no referencable skills but do have Prince2 practitioner and economics degree qualifications. 40 y/o.

I keep getting told do courier deliveries and make £160 a day. But never see this as an option, this can't be what couriers earn? But really looking for anything a little interesting (no more black taxi'ing). Not particularly looking for a career just a decent fun job.

So if anyone know of any good jobs going, give me and other JKB'ers the heads up 🙂

What's wrong with driving a black taxi? Thought it would be a good job

Saw an advert the post office looking for workers delivering the mail

Good luck in your search for a new career

Stagecoach,Lothian country and East Coast buses are taking trainees.

They all pay about the same. Stagecoach are only about 20p more PH. Piss easy job just boring as **** and the 4am starts can be a nightmare. You'll make between 350-400 a week on the buses but it's really really boring.

As a taxi driver, your chances of depression, divorce and suicide etc skyrocket. It's an alright job, didnt mind it day to day, but its quite easy to become and incredibly unhealthy occupation so only now after 18 months I feel like I have recovered my physical and mental health lol

A courier that owns their own van can easy earn £160 and upwards a day, sometimes double that on the run up to Christmas if you're prepared to put the hours in.

There's lots of companies on Indeed, Gumtree etc looking for couriers at the moment, just now is a good time to start making lots of money on the run up to christmas.

You basically become a self employed contractor, they supply the parcels and you deliver them.

How long have you been unemployed?

I had a spell unemployed a few years ago and got my HGV free through a government scheme. The criteria was, unemployed for more than 12 weeks and non-work shy, ie they wouldn't offer the course to waster types who had no interest in finding work.

I imagine with the shortages right now the scheme is still on the go so maybe ask the next time you sign on.

Pension down the pan?

I could get this van for £100, runs fine, it's a VW, but the garage says it needs about £900 worth of work done.

Tempted.

It's done about 150k miles though.

Amazon has multiple companies running fleets, at Euro central and Newbridge? or Bathgate? You need to own your own van to make any money. The companies take over a thoosand a month to hire you a van that usually costs a couple a hunner.

The insurance is steep tho. Risk and reward or whatever its called.

Google Indeed job, search for multi drop driver, Edinburgh.(or wherever you live) There's plenty of jobs there, most of the description is bollox and outright lies, but a jobs a job. No reference needed, just a background check and drug/alcohol test.

Good luck!

What about setting up your own business. It is something you already know how to do and have experience with. You could start a dog walking business, or doggy day care (if animals are your thing). Maybe you could set-up your own driving school. You could even become a childminder if you want. The gender norms / stereotypes of men doing specific jobs are not anything like they used to be.

There's no money in that.

I can imagine. But given the OP's subsequent post regarding mental and physical health, it may be more suitable. Sometimes less is more.

I think when people are at a crossroad like the OP, it is better to evaluate all options.

There can be, know a couple that do it and once you build the business to the point where you are walking 6-8 dogs and hour at anything upto a £10 each it can become very profitable

Doing that kind of maths is easy. But getting to the point where you have enough dogs to make a living would take lots of time and luck. The OP might not even like dogs anyway 😄

I do agree with you about getting the maths to work, but I think 6-8 dogs an hour is OTT also.

As I said earier, my area (Uphall) I see at least 6 different vans. There is a living to be made.

Making a very good living multi-drop delivering is a myth.

The thought of doing multi-drop around any city fills you with horror.

Where do stop/park.

I went to DPD a few years ago and they paid by the package, my numbers might be a bit off but for doing around 150 packages a day 6days a week you would earn 900ish pw but van rental and insurance was nearly 200 a week and fuel would be another 100-150 a week. Then you have tax and pension to your tax, NI and pension. Think you would be lucky to be on a tenner a hour.

Yeh, I work for Royal Mail Relay and know loads of guys who went self-employed working for the likes of Parcelforce ect

The hours you have to do and number of drops is unreal and it is very very difficult to earn a decent wage.

It's a couple so only 3-4 dogs each, they collect the dogs in an airconditioned van take them to somewhere like Pilrig Park and for the most part can exercise multiple dogs at the same time. It's not something tha'ts easy to setup but once established you can arrange the day around dogs that socialise well with each other so you aren't walking 1 dog an hour.

Head to uni.   Get into nursing.  Just started at Napier and loving it.   46yo student nurse.  :)

the missus is a community nurse. 3rd year student started this week, excellent on the theory.

Her hygeine is horrendous, but her weight is even worse at over 20 stone. Basically cannot do the job as she has no physical strength what so ever and is about to pass out when trying to move frail old pensioners.

In the wrong job.

Not necessarily. VAT registration can be advantageous for a small business regardless of turnover.

Thats the point where you have to be vat registered, you can do so before the threshold.

Took me 3 reads at that to realise you were talking about 2 people there. I was wondering why you were being so harsh about your missus!

If buying a van and dogfood are your main input costs then probably worth being VAT-registered...

Both the Mrs and I have considered this.

I'll be 47 in a couple of weeks so probably too old, the Mrs is 37 so I'm really pushing her towards it.

47 is nowt.   I'm doing Learning Disability Nursing and it's crying out for all ages of staff.  What us oldies have is life experience which counts for loads.  Year I'm in has a mum in it with her son doing adult nursing in same year.

Over 30 age bracket probably biggest group in this intake.
