Austin McPhee

I though AM had decent contacts tbf, obviously he won't be remembered fondly at us because of his poor stint as an intern manager and the way things ended but as a no2 he was not too bad, obviously having success with Michael O'Neil and NI and was it not him that brought us Lafferty, Washington and Smith because of his NI connections etc and also had a hand in us signing Meshino too iirc, which opened us up to a new market for players at the time, although not great for us, he seemed a likeable and hard working guy, i personally don't wish him any ill will tbh.

Its strange isn't it.  Cathro & McPhee with no senior football playing career, being lauded by managers who played at a high level, despite what Boydy thinks.    No idea about McPhee, but  Cathro has proved his worth in the EPL as an assistant coach.

I suppose Jose & Wenger prove that it's possible to reach the top jobs with no or little practical high-level professional football experience.

Yes but a big difference between being a Head Coach and an assistant or coach.

2nd that. Most likely hamstrung by status, assocoation and our expectations. Good chance for him to rebuild his career away from certain shadows up here.

Absolutely agree. Michael O’Neill rated him very highly and the IFA have kept him in the Northern Ireland setup - even though they didn’t see him as a successor to Michael, they saw that he brought a lot to the team.

Boyd questioned Cathro's ability to be a manager, not a coach.

How's he going to fit in these duties alongside his own business ventures, plus working for Northern Ireland and playing for Nickelback?

😂

Joe seems to have given AM a bodyswerve when he was looking to appoint an "analyst" (still not sure what that actually is 😏)

Yup sure do, you know in the same way you ignore common decency and ignore the modern world we live in where sectarianism is unacceptable.

Good luck to the man. Best as an assistant manager.

Tactically clueless so will be interesting to see what he could bring to villa if true.

I Can only tell you 5 people in Scotland right now who I would take at hearts

Michael Beale

Callum Davidson

Steve Clarke

Derek Mcinnes

Jim Jefferies

Jim Jeffries??? Don’t you know according to one of our leading JKB’rs Jim can’t be trusted and blabs confidential information to anybody who will listen to him! 🙄

Levein didn’t appoint Cathro as an Assistant Coach…

Indeed so.  Things would probably have worked out better if he had. 😏

I doubt if Cathro would want another shot at being a manager or Head Coach after his miserable experience with us. He's not cut out to be in the media spotlight, but seems to be doing very well as a number 2 or 3.

Tbf, Cathro had been youth coach at Dundee Utd, Assistant at Rio Ave, Valencia and Newcastle before Austin Macphee even had a professional coaching job. Not sure the comparison works tbh.

Incorrect. MacPhee was at Cowdenbeath in 2008 on the coaching staff. Cathro had only just started at the United academy that year.

Aye failed right enough. 8 years and always top 6. McInnes is equal with Neilson and I say that with a strong level of definativeness

Austin was a great person to have in the background, clearly knew what he was doing but not the person to be making all the calls.  Understood the analytical side of the game, and had contacts that lead to us being able to make signings that we wouldn't usually have made.  He was never a manager, but tried to do what he could after being put in that situation.

People didn't like him because he, quote, "looked like a hippy" and as is absolutely typical with social media, leathered him for a physical characteristic above anything else, and refused to change any opinions after an initial knee-jerk thought.

Was advised late last week that he was going to Villa and had bought a property.

It's been announced today that he has joined them.

Fair to say Villa not making an all singing, all dancing announcement for this one.

Was he not behind all our fancy corner and freekick moves? I remember quite a few of them paying off.

Our set pieces where shit for all the time he was here.   We couldn’t take a decent corner. We were even shit at throwings and goal kicks.

Anyone got any idea how that partnership (set up when he was our assistant manager) is going with his US agency? Borne any fruit yet?

I’m sure it had stand-alone commercial merit…

Probably never progressed due the club going into freefall 2 seasons ago and Covid.

I'd rather see us work with a Central/Lowland league club with a significant partnership (ie. support for infrastructure, commercial coaching programs, player loans etc).

Not sure I can quite claim this one, but Haring's second at Hamilton appears to be from the McPhee playbook.

We had one spectacular free kick set up a goal, but failed abysmally on subsequent attempts. Pretty much wasted dozens of free kicks.

McPhee was one constant between Cathro, Levein, and his own stint as caretaker.

As others say he must have something I'm not seeing.

Mcphee and Cathro were rubbish at Hearts, if the go on to surpass Pep and Sir Alex they won't rise one iota in my estimation.

Sometimes people are best left doing the things they do best. See it in workplaces all the time. Someone is good at something, impresses the higher ups, maybe talks a good game, and they get promoted beyond their area of expertise.

I certainly remember we were more dangerous from set pieces at that time – particularly the winning run at the start of that season. But you obviously thought otherwise 🤷‍♂️

I look forward to another sarcy response in a few months.
