Hearts Captains

Elvis is the best I've seen, no contest.

Sandy Jardine I'd rate as the best captain we never had, although Zico wore the armband a neutral observer would suspect Jardine was the leader.

Michael Stewart's characteristics were the polar opposite of what makes a good captain.

In our opinion 'the greatest'.

He also captained Scotland 13 times in 21 appearances.

A Shoreditch Heart

I've been a Hearts supporter for over 50 years and I've seen some great captains, but Steven Pressley for me is the one.

The ‘snake’ as he is often disgustingly called, is doing pretty well in this wee survey.

The best captain of Hearts in my lifetime.

That I've seen.......

Elvis.

On and off the pitch represented the club fantastically. Even when it meant speaking out against Vlad and costing him his job.

Always appeared to inspire and drive on players around him.

Fantastic penalty record.

And if I'm not mistaken there's a nice wee short video somewhere of him speaking to the camera after the cup final about how it was for the fans....was it on the team bus maybe? Mind is hazy.

What was is about Elvis during his time at Hearts made it a ‘nah’ for you?

Was it him taking the ball and scoring late penalties to win at Easter road?

Was it him grabbing the game by the scruff of the neck and scoring two to earn a draw at Falkirk after Gordon got sent off?

Was it captaining Hearts to be the first team to reach the uefa cup group stages?

Was it him taking a stance with Hartley and Gordon?

Was it him taking the first penalty in the 2006 cup final?

Was it him captaining Hearts to the champions league?

Was it him trying to play on concussed in the 2006 semi against hibs?

Or was it because he made a tit of himself when he scored a goal against hearts?

Outstanding post. Should be quoted every time the snakey pish comes up.

He was brilliant at Falkirk that day.

Stephane Adam was captain in a pre-season friendly with his old club Metz in season 1998/99.

Might have only been one game but after his cup final effort the previous season I am sure nobody could grudge him it :)

Imo, Pressley was vastly over rated as a captain and player. (Not saying he was a bad captain or player, just very over rated on here)

More to being a captain than pumping chest imo.

As a Hearts player he represented Scotland more often than anyone in our history, so not only was he vastly over rated on here, but by several Scotland managers too.

Which particular attributes do you think Pressley lacked?

Leadership of the team on the park. He was good at leading himself.

Playing wise was very average imo.

You've posted some tripe at times, but you've outdone yourself here.

You didn't actually give any details about the specifics of his lack of leadership, which was what I asked.

32 caps for Scotland, the most capped Hearts player ever, and the first player in the history of Scottish football to win the cup with 3 different teams.

If that's average, I'd settle for more average players.
