BigAlim
Was trying to find a definitive list online of the players who have been officially club captains to date but have been unsuccessful in doing so. Does anyone know if such a published list exists? And in the spirit of creating a thread on the subject, who is the best captain you’ve ever seen at Hearts? Are "official club captains" not a relatively recent thing? I always just remember a chosen player being the captain. None of this vice captain/match captain/club captain pish. BackOfTheNet
Always remember Locke being so young and a fan. Levein of course, and Pressley. Zaliukas has a special place though it has to be said, even more so now.

I guess there is a grey area there, when I say "official" I'm referring to the player who would always wear the armband if they were ever on the pitch
HillmanHearts
Zico must have had a good record as captain ( but tbh SJ was the leader on the pitch in 86 ) Fulton was a very successful captain in one particular massive game. Elvis was a brilliant captain. ( bit of a Dick after it - but none the less ) Perry was a bit rubbish. Big Zal : Legend.

Tasavallan
My memory goes back to Alan Anderson (The Pivot) and spans until Pressley/Berra. For me, Elvis was Hearts best captain in my life time, even despite his hiccoughs. I so wish he did not do what he did in a Celtic top. ShortmanRossco
Big Zal for me. The fact he was captain ahead of Andy Webster speaks volumes for me given I think he's probably the best centre back we've had in my years.
Fort Vallance
Not my first captain but in my formative years Jim Jeffries sticks in my mind as being a proper captain. No doubt in my mind that but for the injuries Gary Locke would have been a great skipper. Gary Mackay saw the armband as a huge privilege. Zal will always be remembered for lifting the cup that day. Pressley, nah not for me. But the great thing about it is it's all about opinions. If I have to pick one it's the number 26.

jambo mark
Delighted to see some many people saying Pressley. Phenomenal captain and ambassador for the club during his time. Is there not footage of him on the bus coming back from the Gretna final, looking out at hearts fans who’d queued up to welcome them home and saying to fellow players “We should be applauding these people” Great man, who knew and understood what an honour it was to be a leader and captain of our great football club and proud history. Was it him taking the ball and scoring late penalties to win at Easter road? Was it him grabbing the game by the scruff of the neck and scoring two to earn a draw at Falkirk after Gordon got sent off? Was it captaining Hearts to be the first team to reach the uefa cup group stages? Was it him taking a stance with Hartley and Gordon? Was it him taking the first penalty in the 2006 cup final? Was it him captaining Hearts to the champions league? Was it him trying to play on concussed in the 2006 semi against hibs? Or was it because he made a tit of himself when he scored a goal against hearts? absolutely brilliant post

We should be applauding these people WE SHOULD BE APPLAUDING THESE PEOPLE!

Tear to a glass eye lads. I'm really happy to see the big man get the credit he deserves. The way he wore maroon is a shining example of what a captain can be, there's a reason the press called him Mr Hearts. The Celtic thing hurt, we all felt it, but the good outweighs the bad, massively.
4marsbars
I agree with the majority. Pressley. Lots more great names there, Eddie Thomson, Levein, Berra, Gordon, Kidd, but has to be Pressley.

Sorry Stephen. I didn't say I didn't think he was a good captain. What I said was that the ones I mentioned stood out for me personally. It's a generational thing. Apart from Zal of course.

Don't have a problem with Elvis at all just that the ones I mentioned stuck out more for me personally. Nice mention for Alan Anderson. Big Hearts man and a lovely guy. Thomaso
The Captain who was Hearts through and through, loved the Club and gave 110% every time he pulled on the beloved maroon jersey…. JIM JEFFRIES
OTT
When I think Hearts captain, Steven Pressley is who jumps to mind, closely followed by Zal. Real shame how Elvis allowed his reputation to be ruined by his antics, even if they were intended as a GIRFUY to Vlad, its not how it came off at all. Likewise, when I think Hearts manager, its JJ who immediately comes to mind.

Uncle Buck
Pressley was the best captain I’ve ever seen, followed by Zaliukas. Michael Stewart was the worst. I would have hated him as a team mate/captain.

I would have hated him as a team mate/captain. Probably one of the least inspiring characters you could imagine playing alongside. Would always be seeking an excuse or someone to blame when things are not going his way. A huge number would love the opportunity to pull on the maroon. However, if you've spent half a dozen years on Man United's books, managed a handful of league cup and European dead rubbers, a couple of failed loan deals, rock up at Hearts on a loan (which was hugely underwhelming and deemed to be a mistake by management), then sign for Hibs, you've got to question your ability, application and worth). Nobody should be leaving Man United after a lengthy period with so few games and turn up at Hibs on a perm deal.

I think it was Don Cowie was captain before Kitchen. Have always believed it was a mistake to take the armband from him. (And now, having found myself in agreement with i8 possibly for the first time ever, it's time to take a couple fo aspirins and lie down in a darkened room until I can get over it.). 🤪
