Rudi Skacel Posted December 28, 2025 Posted December 28, 2025 Watched a few games in the first set. Looked like Sabalenka was giving alot of effort, and kyrios was just playing well within himself. The scoreline was what I would expect. I think on a proper court and proper rules, Sabalenka would have been lucky to get a game.
JudyJudyJudy Posted December 29, 2025 Posted December 29, 2025 Proof if any was needed that sex based sports are in place for a reason . The disparity between Saba and Nick was clear to see , despite tweaks to the rules to give her some advantage .
PortyJambo Posted January 5 Posted January 5 Great start to the tennis year for Fran Jones. After getting into the top 100 for the first time last year, she's now beaten the No.2 seed and world No.15, Emma Navarro, in the first tournament of the year in Auckland.
PortyJambo Posted January 8 Posted January 8 Maybe the Grand Slam tennis thread is the wrong place for this, but even if there was a general "tennis" thread it would still be the wrong place... A girl managed to get an entry into a W35 event in Nairobi, but she clearly has never played the game in her life . Doesn't know where to stand and has to be told by her opponent, can barely hit the ball when she "serves", etc, etc. Unsurprisingly, she got double-bageled. The LTA will probably be looking into whether she has any UK links and whether they can fund her...
Rudi Skacel Posted January 8 Posted January 8 Sadly played at a higher level than me!! but yeah its incredible that a player with no record atall was able to get a wildcard.

Reminds me of that time that Souness signed a player for a team down south that had never played the game before, sure it was because he was a brother of some known player so they thought he must be legit Edit - from Googling it, it was a hoax where someone purporting to be George Weah phoned up Souness in 1996 and persuaded him to sign his "cousin", and he signed him without a background check. Hard to imagine that happening nowadays! Edited January 8 by PortyJambo
PortyJambo Posted January 11 Posted January 11 Qualifying for the first Grand Slam of the year in Australia starts tonight. TNT and Discovery+ have the UK rights for the live broadcast. No Draper in the men's event, but Norrie and Fearnley have direct entry to the main draw. There are 9 other British men in the qualifying event. Raducanu, Kartal and Jones all have direct entry to the women's main draw, with 3 others in Boulter, Dart and Mingge Xu trying to qualify.
PortyJambo Posted January 12 Posted January 12 Mixed results in the first day of qualifying for British tennis players. Dan Evans, Jack Pinnington-Jones, Jay Clarke and Oliver Crawford all lost, but Arthur Fery and George Loffhagen got through to the 2nd round of qualifying. Katie Boulter got lucky too, as doesn't have to go through qualifying now as enough players dropped out for her to now have a main draw direct entry.

Nothing mixed about the results for Day 2 of qualifying. Dart won her 1st round match, but the others, Harris, Choinski (both seeded), Peniston and Xu, all lost their 1st round matches.

Fery and Loffhagen make the final round of qualifying, but Darts goes out. Loffhagen plays Nissah Basavareddy of the US in the 3rd round, who got through against Seb Ofner in a weird one. Ofner went 7-1 up in the final set tiebreaker and started celebrating and going to the net to shake his opponent's hand...before the umpire told him it's a 10 point tiebreaker in the last set . He then must have lost his concentration after thinking he'd won, as he lost 8 of the next 9 points and the tiebreak 13-11. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/articles/cpdy1yzyjvlo

PortyJambo Posted January 14 Posted January 14 (edited) Sounds like the One Point Slam went down quite well in Melbourne. An Aussie amateur won it and the A$1m prize, which is probably a better result for the organisers than a professional multi-millionaire winning it. Bit of fun really and reads like those taking part had a laugh and, although I don't see Wimbledon doing it any time soon, I wouldn't be surprised if somewhere like the US Open did something similar, seeing as they're already experimented with things like the mixed doubles being staged before the main events. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/articles/ckgyl1ndw57o Edited January 14 by PortyJambo

PortyJambo Posted January 15 Posted January 15 Well done to Arthur Fery who came through qualifying to make the main draw. Saw his match at Wimbledon last year where he beat Popyrin, and he looks a decent player. Seems to have kicked on from that to start moving up the rankings, and qualifying for a GS is no mean achievement. He's been drawn against the Italian 20th seed, Flavio Cobolli, in the 1st round.

I forgot Raducanu was playing a couple of hours ago, so didn't watch it, but she won in straight sets, and Norrie managed to get through in 5 against Bonzi also.
rudi must stay Posted January 18 Posted January 18 I call Raducanu Radnuka I think that's a name that suits her
rudi must stay Posted Tuesday at 10:53 Posted Tuesday at 10:53 Like the look of Mochuzuki he plays a simple and consistent game and he has that typically strong Japanese temperament. He's 92 in the world he has the potential to go higher than that

neilnunb Posted Tuesday at 11:21 Posted Tuesday at 11:21 That Osaka outfit. I guess if you can't win much at the tennis these days, you need to get the attention somehow.

neilnunb Posted Wednesday at 08:40 Posted Wednesday at 08:40 Emma out. Suppose it means she avoids Sabalenka.
PortyJambo Posted Wednesday at 10:40 Posted Wednesday at 10:40 Rain stops play with Norrie 2-1 up in sets and 4-3 up in the 4th set tiebreak. I imagine they'll want to come back and finish it if the rain stops, even though it's pretty late, rather than have to come back tomorrow for what could just be a few points.

Norrie gets it done in 4 sets. Last Brit standing...again. Likely plays Zverev in the 3rd round. Edited Wednesday at 11:45 by PortyJambo

rudi must stay Posted Friday at 12:55 Posted Friday at 12:55 What an arrogant so and so Bublik eh. Immensely unlikable
I P Knightley Posted yesterday at 00:51 Posted yesterday at 00:51 Stan Wawrinka is still playing in this tournament!!! He's very nearly old enough to be my dad.
