Kartal through to the last 16 though, faces Andreeva next.

Good start for Kartal in Beijing, takes the first set 7-5 against Andreeva....although she's a break down at 2-0 in the second set Edited October 1 by PortyJambo
PortyJambo Posted October 1 Posted October 1 Great win for Kartal over the World no.5 in Mirra Andreeva. I thought she's lose the match after losing the second set 6-2, but she came back to win the decider 7-5.
PortyJambo Posted October 1 Posted October 1 The BBC had a feature they called 'Second Serve' earlier this year, where they did a weekly rundown of the top stories in tennis, risers and fallers in rankings, and a 'Brit-watch' section. It wasn't great in-depth journalism or anything, but it was a good feature for those that maybe didn't follow tennis that closely outwith Wimbledon. It seemed to be well received as well, going by the comments on it each week saying that people were enjoying reading it...but, for some reason, it seems to have been binned as I haven't seen one for months now.
PortyJambo Posted October 7 Posted October 7 After introducing a party court at the Aus Open in the last couple of years, they're now going to have a One Point Slam event in January next year before the main event, with Carlos Alcaraz going to be one of the professionals appearing against amateur tennis players. They apparently had it this year, but the prize money wasn't that high, whereas in 2026 it's going to be almost the same for the winner of it as it is for reaching the semi-finals of the main singles event, A$1M. Win 1 point against a professional player and you go through to the next round. There must be a decent chance of winning it for an amateur, seeing as missing 1 serve would lose it for the professional. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/articles/clyd77np0l0o

Shame, as I can afford the tube fare to Southfields but getting to Melbourne would break the bank. I'd have to get my old racquet re-gripped but, with that done, I'd be a dangerous contestant.

Get on the phone to them now and see if they'll pay your travel expense to Oz...

I've actually still got a woody... ...and not from that time that Annabel Croft kissed me on the face. It's in its racquet press, so shouldn't be warped, but the strings and grips may need attention.

PortyJambo Posted October 23 Posted October 23 If anyone's wanting to see some tennis and don't have Sky, the BBC is showing a bit of Mingge this week from Wales... https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/live/cn4jyxyjrwrt
PortyJambo Posted October 24 Posted October 24 Mingge into the semi-finals in Wrexham....shame she's not played the Czech playing at the moment who's called Havlickova.
PortyJambo Posted October 27 Posted October 27 Good week for the future of British women's tennis in Wrexham, as 18 year old Mimi Xu wins the biggest title of her career, a W100 event, against last year's 16 year old US Open Junior winner, Mika Stojsavljevic, who won a title last week before reaching the Wrexham final. Both up to their highest rankings, and Mimi, now she's 18, can play more often on the senior circuit next year.

PortyJambo Posted October 28 Posted October 28 (edited) Norrie beats Alcaraz at the Paris Masters, his first win over a world no.1. Carlos not at his best but then again, as usual for him, Norrie was making him play an extra shot in so many rallies. Edited October 28 by PortyJambo
Rudi Skacel Posted October 29 Posted October 29 A glimmer of hope for Sinners year end number 1 hopes.
PortyJambo Posted October 30 Posted October 30 Norrie is playing Vacherot, the shock winner of the Shanghai Masters a few weeks ago, in the last 16 of the Paris Masters at the moment on Sky Tennis
PortyJambo Posted October 30 Posted October 30 Vacherot, with the backing of the French crowd seeing as he's from Monaco, wins the first set on a tiebreak. Norrie was on top for the majority of the set but couldn't break Vacherot, who finished the set stronger.
PortyJambo Posted October 30 Posted October 30 Norrie can't follow up his win over Alcaraz, as he loses to Vacherot 7-6 6-4
I P Knightley Posted November 4 Posted November 4 Well, this is going to be interesting/entertaining: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/articles/c9d6vp3lv4xo Kyrgios (who's not played competitively since March) to take on Sabalenka. Both are entertainers, so it ought to be enjoyable, albeit not really a 'match'. I'm sure that they'll play under some modified rules so that it's not a thrashing. Unfortunately for women's tennis, doing so is likely to undermine the credibility of the game in that the message it might send out is "Of course women are inferior to men; so we're playing a different game to compensate."

Slightly smaller court on Sabalenka's side, and only 1 serve each per point. Not sure how much difference that will make, especially the one serve as both will serve a little slower to try and be more accurate, but Kyrgios will still have a significant serve speed advantage. I'm not sure Sabalenka, and women's tennis in general, have much to gain from the match. Even if Kyrgios takes it seriously, and I think he might just treat is a laugh and as the exhibition match it is, if Sabelenka wins it'll be about how Kyrgios isn't anywhere near match fit and is outside the men's top 600 players currently. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/articles/cvgdn9ewg97o
I P Knightley Posted November 5 Posted November 5 I think I read that the guy who played in the "Battle of the Sexes" with BJK in the '70s was properly ranked deep in the boonies, whereas Kyrgios should really have picked up a slam by now, if not for his attitude and his injuries. He ('70s guy) also smoked and drank at the changeovers. It'll be interesting to watch but I kind of agree that Sabba's on a hiding to nothing. She shouldn't win - even with those adjustments to the court and one serve only. And, as you say, if she somehow does, folk will scrutinise whether Kyrgios was just playing it for giggles.
PortyJambo Posted November 8 Posted November 8 (edited) Cam Norrie is in the final of one of the last ATP events of the season today, an ATP250 event in Metz. I must admit I thought he was on his way down out of the top 100 earlier this season, but he's made a good comeback in the last 6 months, so much so that he'll probably be seeded when the Aus Open comes around in a couple of months.
