Bo’ness Athletic boss Willie Irvine admitted he was speechless after watching his team lose out on three points against title rivals Syngenta, due to the referee allowing the hosts to kick-off when his players were in the midst of celebrating going 2-1 up with five minutes to go.

 

After veteran hitman Andy Rodgers put Gordon Wylde’s side ahead in the second-half, two strikes from 55-goal man Tiwi Daramola put the away side top of the league, and set to pick up three points at Ochilview.

 

However, while the Bo’ness players celebrations spilled into their own half, referee Richard Macartney allowed the Dyes to kick-off, and they bombarded up the pitch scoring to level the match with just goalkeeper Fraser Currid to beat.

 

Hamilton Accies loanee Lennon Pirrie slotted home to set up a chaotic ending with Craig Sneddon sent off for Bo’ness for his protestations.

 

The anger was evident at the full-time whistle with the away sides directors and playing staff livid.

 

Speaking to the Herald, an incensed Irvine said: “In my 40-odd years in the game I have never witnessed anything like that.

 

"Imagine if a situation like that had happened at Celtic or Rangers and the referee did that, imagine the fallout. A riot would have occurred, people would have been murdered.

“Half of our players were off the park and he (the referee) has got to identify that both sides were ready to restart the game.

 

“Imagine if that happened every match, no-one would celebrate near the corner of the pitch because the other team would go up and score.

 

“It just wouldn’t be done. It was embarrassing.

 

“If we had won our last two games and won this one we would have been up more than likely.

 

“For the referee to do that when we have dominated the match and could have been two or three up really was something I’ve never saw before.

 

“Even bringing sportsmanship into it, honestly, if that was me in charge of a side and that happened I would say to my players to let a goal go in.

 

“In my eyes it was unfair and it was something that you just don’t want to see in football.

“Our team was celebrating a goal and we have just about lost out on a league title because of it.

“I started football in and around 1982/83 and it is something I have never seen before and will not ever again, I am speechless.”

 

 

 

I’ve a vague recollection of one of our players stepping back into the opposition half whilst we celebrated a goal in our own half. May have been Zaliukas. Could be talking utter jobbies though

This was a long time coming. Bonnyrigg way too good for the Lowland League, and got their just rewards today. 

Won't be surprised if they end up winning Division 2 next season.

My team Armadale have dropped 5 points in their last 2 games and it has cost them promotion.

 

Winning 0-2 v Syngenta and lost 3-2 and then today drew 2-2 with Whitburn after leading by 2.

Firstly, we have already passed on our congratulations to Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic on their play-off win and have wished them well for the future.

Secondly, and most importantly for Cowdenbeath FC, we thank you all for your most loyal support both yesterday, all season and indeed always. We are proud of our community and to be your football club. In our 142 year history there have been many ups and downs and of course yesterday represented one of the lows. Days of great joy and some of sadness are very much the lot of most football followers. Self-pity though won’t do us much good so today we begin anew – the first day of the rest of our lives as the saying goes. Changes and challenges lie ahead but with your ongoing help and commitment we will focus on ‘bouncebackability and the Blue Brazil’. We are indeed encouraged by the depth and warmth of support we see for the club on Social Media and from messages sent to us.

We of course now immediately have to take a bit of stock and deal with a number of key matters. But as regards the bigger picture, we have already had meetings with a number of fans and other parties in recent weeks regarding being involved in playing a part and bringing fresh ideas and impetus to the club. That process is continuing. We are looking in some ways too to evoke the spirit of the famous Cowdenbeath Cooperative and the core part it played in our community. Elements of a cooperative approach involving the wide engagement of a range of people can help shape our future – an ethos whereby many can play an active part be it large or small at differing levels. MERIT is an acronym we are using – key aspects to refresh the club being centred on Money, Energy, Resources, Ideas, Time.

If you can, please BE involved – that is the spirit of our community and our fans.

I was in hospitality that day, couldn't have gone better.  Also got to bear in mind that we scored our 10 goals in a 55 minute period either side of half time.  I suspect Robbie probably told the players that 10 was enough of a scudding because we seemed to ease up in the final 20 minutes.

It's fairly normal though for at least one player to stay in the opposing half after a goal to prevent the opponents from kicking off before the rest of the team are back in position after celebrating.

 

There was a similar situation when we beat the huns at Ibrox in the opening game of the Championship season.  They got a late equaliser then we scored the winner straight from kick-off.  Fat Sally wasn't happy because they'd made a sub but the player wasn't in position when we kicked off.  They should have left a player in our half to prevent the kick-off until the sub got into position.

I mind Zal doing that in a home game against St Mirren.

 

Everyone except him were in a heap in our half by the main stand.

 

St Mirren players kept trying to push Zal into our half but he resisted until our other players got back into position.

It’s a bad day for Cowdenbeath FC and this statement is a good rallying call.

Most Hearts fans will recall similar backs-to-the-wall situations and their own emotions when our club’s future was at stake.

it has and it’s working which is the pleasing thing. It’s flushing all the shite out the leagues and getting genuine clubs in.

Saw an interview with a Bonnyrigg player. He said coming through the juniors was a big help and he expects them to keep going up.

I'm sure it is within the rules but considering the trouble it causes when a team doesn't return the ball after the opposition kicks the ball out for an injury something like this would cause a riot in a bigger game.

Fundamentally there’s issues with how it works logistically as proven last year when Brechin tried to bribe teams to let them in the LL. I don’t know how you resolve the issue if say Bonnyrigg get promoted and say Peterhead got relegated because there’s no way they could play lowland league. 
 

What it proves is clubs like Cove, Kelty etc can progress and there will be many more, Darvel for example who I expect in the coming years to get in and move up the leagues. 
 

The issue with the B teams could be resolved if they just did a B league logistically. The lack of reserve football kills young Scottish players.

The English Football League and National League have demonstrated how fluidity between the leagues can work both up and down if you are minded to do it.  Half the NL have played in the EFL this century. Similarly the EFL has seen many former Non League sides establish themselves at a higher level.

 

Others have dropped into the NL and made their way back. A striking example is Luton. They were in the top tier in the season immediately before the EPL started in 1992/3, dropped down through the leagues and into the "Conference" in 2009, where they spent five seasons, before regaining their EFL status in 2014. This season they contested the playoffs to reach the Premier League, so almost going full circle over a period of 30 years..

I don’t see any real problem that would be caused by Peterhead or Elgin being relegated: they would simply return to the Highland League, from where they joined the Scottish Leagues.

The point I mean is number wise in the leagues. If nobody gets promoted from the Highland league but they then have to accept another team into it, it knocks the balance off in terms of numbers as there would be one less team in the LL.

Numbers wise there is the same situation in the LL.  Had Fraserburgh won the SPFL playoff with Cowdenbeath being relegated, the LL rules on relegation would have resulted in Gretna 2008 being relegated along with Vale of Leithen, in order to keep the LL numbers at 16 (excl B teams).

I was at the Tranent game today. The gap between the sides was as big as the score suggests.

 

Darvel was represented at the game by a couple of players and some coaching staff, but I'm not sure what they would have taken from what was a mismatch.

 

The SFA/SOSFL need to look at the league dropping to tier 7 and becoming a feeder for the WOSFL.

 

The Bonnyrigg result wasn't a surprise either. They made six changes to their starting line up against Cowdenbeath last week. It will probably serve as a reminder that they need to strengthen their squad before embarking on their League 2 campaign.
