NHS Data sharing

The NHS intends to share "personally identifiable" data about the medical records held by your GP with other healthcare professionals for the purposes of your individual care (fair enough)  but also "to support health and care planning and research, including by commercial organisations (as far as I see in the UK and elsewhere). If you don't want this to happen you have to opt out by the end of this month. You can opt out later but your existing records will not then be covered by the opt out.

I feel a bit uncomfortable about this. It is not clear why the data needs to be personally identifiable and its extension  to commercial organisations could include a huge range of businesses.

I am inclined to opt out. Any other views on this? I have not had any direct communication from the NHS or my GP.

Letting the Yanks have a peek so they can decide what parts to buy up.

Another step towards the break up and privatisation of the NHS.

^^ This.

Conservative government came to power explaining how they would resolve the issues left over by Labour and the global economy crash.

We have had a over a decade of increased UK debt, austerity which was widely panned as non effective and delayed recovery, various bit of public owned entities privatised like the 80s (Royal Mail) and the NHS battered from pillar to post.

On the plus side - many of the English have been conditioned to blame foreigners for it all.

Having Conservative views on life/the economy isn't a bad thing but the people who operate the party/country are thanks to greed/incompetence/corruption.

Rant over - thanks Tories for continually ****ing over public services and the people of the UK. Feels like we're approaching a point where the Major government was on it's way out - just need a decent opposition leader now.

English health service I think.

Sorry yes. I get the anti-Tory rants but it was more the Big Brotherish aspect that concerned me.

And I can see that the data could be a gold mine for Big Pharma marketing and product development.

And this.

I'm generally well informed for an average Joe but this is the first I've heard of this. It really is a big deal. How come the opposition aren't howling about it from the rooftops?

Already happens in Scotland, well for diabetics at least.

I'm on a scheme called mydiabetesmyway which is run by NHS Scotland and your personal site contains all your lab results, clinic test results, medication, doses etc etc etc, you can even add your own home test results, if you so wish.

I got the results of a blood test, just Monday past, I knew the results before the doctor phoned me to tell me them, I accessed them online via my site.  I think it's a great thing as it's handing back some level of control of your condition to yourself, as your site shows you where you should be and where your levels actually are and not just glucose levels but various different components of your blood, and if something is too high it gives you advice on how to get things back in range again.

Can anyone access your data? I assume since it is your "personal site" the answer is no. And certainly it should be. The topic is about the NHS allowing access to your personal data identifiable as yours to others for purposes not related to your personal care, including commercial organisations here and abroad.

Since my OP I read in today's paper that the roll out (in England only for now) of the provision of your medical records other than for the purpose of your care has been postponed from 1st July to 1st September.

They tried to launch something similar a few years ago and it was abandoned after protest.

There is speculation that it was thought the current love affair with the NHS might help them get away with it now.

Anyone who has access to the data held on the SCI-DC (Scottish Care Information - Diabetes Collaboration) system.

SCI-Diabetes provides a fully integrated shared electronic patient record to support treatment of NHSScotland patients with Diabetes. It provides functionality for both Primary and Secondary Care Clinicians and includes specialty modules for Paediatrics, Podiatry, Diabetes Specialist Nursing and Dietetics

i would be questioning if that breached gdpr rules.

The way the Fokkers in this government roll, it's not going to matter whether it does or not. They'll simply ignore when they're told that they've broken rules.

If it’s medical history with no names attached then yes for me. Ages and sex would also be very useful to allow proper research and medical to flourish and bring in better care and health outcomes.

It's a good idea but it's also commercially very lucrative. As it's our data, those private entities should pay us for it if they want it.
