All human beings at the end of the day and getting addicted to something is not a selection process.

That's why there are help organisations.

Part of me thinks alcoholics are selfish for example but if it has got a hold of someone I can see how difficult it would be to get free from it. Same for smokers.

Yes and no.

Alcohol and smoking are drugs, they have a physical element to them.

Smoking, which I hate also does not impact others like alcoholism.

A different debate but it does seem that many behaviours are excused now as an addiction, ranging from gaming, gambling through to porn/sex addictions.

I wonder where the line is-addiction / illness v just poor judgement/ environment factors, selfish or even worse behaviour.

Going to be harsh but I have no sympathy for footballers who earn ridiculous wages gambling thier money away.

Is it greed, lack of  intelligence, environmental, or just pure selfishness illness - I don't know, but I don't have sympathy for folk that bring much of the sadness and tragedy on themselves.

Same goes for actors etc.

The average Joe blogs might use gambling as a hobbie and an escape but in all honesty I still find it hard to  have sympathy for them.

Human nature for me. When sky and BT are badgering adverts with gambling offers it’s only natural people will start to look. Then it snowballs from personal experience.

I look in from the outside now and see mates who post their wins on WhatsApp groups and think if only everybody knew how many bets you had on for that game, lucky to have broke even! It’s a horrible cycle.

that poster appears to be addicted to the attention you get from posting tons and tons of stuff on a football forum - hopefully doesn’t have such far-reaching consequences as other addictions but difficult to imagine a satisfactory life enhanced by those actions

and well done to the ones on the thread managing their gambling issues and for having the courage to speak about them and offer support to others

i enjoy a few bets and lucky that not addicted but have been to cigarettes and it would have been incomprehensible to me how difficult it turned out to actually give up until I actually tried

I speak from personal experience, my brother tried to take his life and it was largely due to gambling.

I was a big part of his support circle to get him in a better place.

I don't take the subject lightly.

My life is fine.

I won't be retiring at 50, but I'm comfortable, have my health, family and friends.

Thanks for your concern, it is however, interesting how you show support for one addiction then are very passive aggressive in regards to the another.

Congrats on that.

Yeah, it's a vicious circle.

I've never been that interested in gambling but it ruins life.

It's also very much a man thing, very interesting psychology involved in this and also other addictions.

well done on the support you gave to your brother

i think you have misunderstood part of my post

i didn’t refer directly to your life but good to hear like a lot of us no doubt it’s fairly good without being perfect

also the possible addiction to a football forum / social media - can you point out where I’ve made light of it or been aggressive about

you will noticed that another poster made a wee joke about it (meant in good taste it appears) but I chose not to respond to it with a wee  or something like if I wasn’t making a serious point

interested in your response to this

Lucky you that your life is fine.

Congrats on that.

Some on here have expressed a different feeling towards gambling and how their life has been as a result but not one said they didn't take repsonsibility, didn't regret it and not one asked for sympathy. All shared an experience to do with their own or football's relationship with gambling. I have absolutely no idea what your initial post did to advance any sort of argument or debate related to the subject. Purely provacative.

Also your lack of sympathy towards addicted individuals considering what your brother went through is absolutely mind blowing.

It was meant in good taste. Humour is like a shield that can help you get through the most testing of circumstances.

More compassion is needed in the world as well.

we’re probably not going to get much further with this and obviously want to avoid clogging-up this important thread with side-debates but you would really need to explain what and where - that’s just a term and not a complimentary one I don’t imagine in many scenarios - so rather than just use it it needs to be defined in the context of the post

suits me just to leave our side-debate here for the greater good of the thread but if you feel you want to respond then try to substantiate

cheers

The subject is about footballs gambling addiction.

I stated my view on them

Maybe if the subject moves away from footballs gambling addictions to others personal experiences and gambling in general it should be moved to the shed.

If someone is lucky enough to earn  10k, 20k 100k a week  playing  football and blows it away on an addiction then I have little sympathy.

Gambling, drugs, alcohol.

I've seen threads and  posts about players like e Gary o Connor ( drugs), Griffiths ( gambling) and many posters are a bit less understanding and supportive.

I'd suggest mods move it / re name it  if it is more about personal experiences.

Maroon Sailor

The programme is not looking for anybody's sympathy.

It's showing football clubs hoovering up money from the gambling industry but also making them aware it's a double edge sword as fans are getting sucked in to dangerous levels by these constant adverts and free bets

Yip.

It needs to change.

I've not had a bet in 4 months and do not miss it at all.

I found the first few weeks a bit tricky but after that it was fairly easy.

A psychologist on the radio here recently said that worldwide evidence proved that all addictions were experienced largely by poorer people in society.  He said it wasn't so much a question of intelligence as one of escapism.

Not sure I agree with him entirely.  I didnt start smoking because I was poor.  I've fortunately never been poor.  I kept smoking because I enjoyed it.  Stopping was a significant life achievement for me.

Best thread on this place already, plenty of people showing support ❤👏

Very humbling people's stories. The effort and things people have to put in place to come away from such a difficult addiction is always very impressive.

There ditching them has nothing to do with the gambling side of things though and all to do with the scantily clad Chinese ladies used for advertising and their other links to as you say soft or otherwise porn.

If another bookie comes along I'm sure Delia will be baking cakes for them pronto.
