Joey Barton trial: Manager accused of Daniel Stendel attack

Ex-footballer Joey Barton caused serious facial injuries when he pushed over a rival manager after a tense 4-2 defeat, a court has heard.

Mr Barton, 38, boss of League One side Fleetwood at the time, is accused of chasing Daniel Stendel into the tunnel at Barnsley's Oakwell Stadium.

Once inside, Sheffield Crown Court heard, the defendant shoved the German in the back and caused him to tumble into the structure.

Mr Barton denies a charge of assault.

Prosecutor Ian Goldsack told jurors there had been tensions between the two sides when they met earlier in the season at Fleetwood, including a handshake that Mr Stendel "took to be an intimidatory gesture".

These tensions carried on into the match at Barnsley seven months later, the prosecutor said, and the defendant had confronted Mr Stendel both during the match and after the final whistle.

After the defeat, Mr Goldsack said, Mr Barton was "still very worked up" and used some foul language towards Mr Stendel, which he "did not fully understand but realised he was being insulted". As players and staff left the pitch, Mr Goldsack said, the defendant ran past a number of people and entered the tunnel behind Mr Stendel.

"Mr Stendel felt a push from behind and fell forward, hitting his face against that tunnel structure. He was knocked to the ground and when he looked up he saw the defendant passing him," he said.

"He believed him to be responsible for what happened."

He suggested the defendant's mood "was perhaps not helped" by the previous defeat, a player being sent off "just after it looked as though Fleetwood might get back in the game" and "provocative celebrations" upon Barnsley's third goal by first team coach Christopher Stern.

Jurors were shown photographs of Mr Stendel's injuries, the most serious of which included a dislodged upper right incisor and associated nerve damage.

They were also shown video footage of Mr Barton running into the tunnel behind Mr Stendel, followed by the structure shaking. Further footage showed a bloodied Mr Stendel being helped back to the changing room.

Mr Goldsack said jurors must decide "whether Mr Stendel fell forwards in that tunnel area, colliding with the tunnel structure and thereby sustaining those injuries, as the result of an unlawful assault and, if he did, whether it was Mr Barton who is responsible for that assault".

Earlier, 12 jurors were selected after being asked questions including "have you heard of Joey Barton?" and "do you have any opinions about Joey Barton?"

Potential jurors were also asked whether they were at the match or watched it on TV and also whether they were Barnsley or Fleetwood Town supporters.

The jury has been told that Mr Stendel will give evidence by videolink from Germany on Tuesday.

That's harsh, I know we ended up bottom at the end but there was plenty games left and it was mostly Leveins fault.

On the subject of thuggery, I read on the BBBC site this very day that Harry Cochrane still has a displaced bone as a result of Brown's assault.

In fairness to the BBC they laid it on thick.  They linked it to Cochrane outplaying him in the 4-0 game.

I will remember Brown for one thing and one thing only.  That assault on a comparative boy.

Read that, too.

Brown is a fecking disgrace.

As for Barton it reminds me of the "case of the bloody knife" in Blackadder Goes Forth.

The accused was found standing over the body, bloody knife in hand and said to police on his arrest "I'm glad I killed the b******".

Open and shut (nut)case, imo.

The Apprentice

Barton has form for this kind of cowardly thing. You only need to look at the incident on Sergio Aguero when he was sent off for QPR.

I went to a Newcastle v Chelsea game years ago 2011 I was back row of the bottom tier leazes west corner and above us was the players box.

Mike Williamson was suspended after headbutting the Bolton player the week before and their captain Fabricio Coloccini were sitting right behind us we got autographs and pictures with them and was asking Williamson why he stuck the head on Elmander he said it was an accident had a bit of a laugh. Barton was behind and we shouted him down Williamson even waved at him to come down for a photo for us he came out and said I get this all the time I look like Barton but I'm not Joey Barton and swaggered off with a big grin on his face utter cock of a man.

I remember the build up to a Liverpool game at Anfield against Newcastle Barton was out in the papers saying he had the chance to sign for Liverpool and it would be a dream to play for Liverpool. I think some fans started thinking different of him with his comments to Liverpool role on the game and he got sent off for a crunching wreckles no need tackle on Xabi Alonso. He then came out years later to say he had beef with Alonso for stealing his move to Liverpool of him.

What mad world does Barton live in Xabi never stole anything of him Rafa probably took one look at him and said no chance.

If you’ve got kids with you then that’s out of order. I’ve got no problem with any professional ignoring grown men acting like fan boys though.

Nah it was out of order the other two players were sound enough but Barton was an arse. When they were fans young kid in his toon top. it never bothered me at the time my English team are Liverpool I went down just to watch another English game of football with them.  But the more I see Barton now and think how the hell did he get through life and still in football amazes me.

Someone used the word unbalanced and I think that's right.  Same with Brown.  His behaviour at the end of the SC final last year was seriously troubling.  His assault on Cochrane was astonishing.

Virtually every criminal in NZ these days tries to play the mental health card after they've been caught.  That blurs the fact that many people do suffer from adverse mental health conditions.  I strongly suspect that Barton and Brown are both in that category.
