Pick your best Scotland team ever (all eras)

Morgan

Recommended Posts

It’s looking like Jordan, Law and Dalglish would be obvious choices.

McQueen and/or Holton, perhaps?

Asa Hartford, Jim Baxter, McGinn, Bremner, McCoist, Cooper, Goram, Lorimer, Archie Gemmill - all in with a big shout.

Who else, and in which formation?

Robbo?   For me, that’s a definite. 👍

I'm terrible at these sorts of things, but these are from whom I've seen play for Scotland (apologies for any I have out of position). Apologies also to Joe Jordan - I just couldn't fit him in there.

McFadden is getting a fair amount of traction based on one brilliant goal.  I’d have Souness in there instead.

McFadden was our talisman for a few years. He did far more than score that belter.

I know he wouldn't be in an overall first 11 bit if you're asking people to pick on who they've seen, there has been no-one better since France 98 (imo).

The trouble with an 'all eras' team is that there will be nobody around now who saw, for example, Bobby Walker play (The Football Encyclopaedia from 1934, edited by Frank Johnston, referred to him simply as "Bobby Walker, the greatest natural footballer who ever played.") so how could we leave him out, a man who got 29 caps for his country when international travel wasn't really a thing.

For what it's worth, much as I can appreciate that players are fitter and more dedicated now than ever before I'd find it hard to pick anyone from this century. We had so many very good players playing throughout the 60s-90s that even our current 'star' player, Robertson (imo he's not that good a defender) would struggle to get in my team.

I’m fortunate enough and old enough to have seen all these play. Was tough to leave out the likes of McLeish, Hartford, Lorimer, Jordan etc but this team would take some beating.

Correct.

"one brilliant goal" - scored 5 or 6 peaches.

For "all eras" you'd have to include some of the Wembley Wizards - Hughie Gallacher and Alex James would be obvious choices. Alex James was a serial English league champion with Arsenal (and in the English Hall of Fame) and as ex-Raith player was considered as Raith's greatest ever player (ahead of Jim Baxter, no less). Hughie scored more than a goal-a-game for Scotland.

Comparisons over eras are difficult!

That’s what you call a ‘front three’! 👍

I like wingers, so would try to fit in Eddie Gray too. I was also a bit of a fan of Tommy Hutchison.

Scotlands had some ridiculous footballers, it's almost impossible to pick a greatest squad of 23 nevermind an all time XI.

The second one must be Paul, picked on account of his performances for the U21's. ;)

Both the Walkers, Massie, Cruikshank, Mackay, Wardhaugh and Bauld would be in it.  Wouldn't matter too much who you stuck in there with them but I'd try to fit Baxter and White in.  And Robbo of course.  And Alex Young on the wing.

That should do it.

I think that’s the first time Murdoch has had a mention.  It’s not the worst suggestion.  👍

I can’t name a team but in my lifetime certain players made me fall in love with the Scotland team.
It was really Kenny Dalglish. He just seemed god like to me as a youngster. I had Liverpool strips and I’ve never supported any of that English nonsense or even since. Supporting an English side is ****ing nonsense. He was the man though imo.
I admit to liking Charlie Nicholas too as a yoof! 🙈🙈

Robbo was an idol growing up too but as an adult the only player I’ve ever seriously got the love for, like proper loved is Rudi...
Jesus I loved that *****🥰🇱🇻🇱🇻🇱🇻
