Hibs stars should carry Scottish Cup Final failure can not Jack Ross after unforgivable showing – Tam McManus

Tam has hit out at the online poll that asked if the manager should be sacked following Scottish Cup Final defeat.

Hibs went AWOL at Hampden on Saturday and on the biggest occasion of them all it was best summed-up by another four-letter word: SH*T.

The big game players that were supposed to make the difference in the Scottish Cup Final were posted missing. They no doubt popped up in Callum Davidson’s back pocket as Saints partied later on at night.

It was an unforgivable performance. Weak. A nothing display in a cup final.

St Johnstone won at a canter and a fourth defeat on the spin to the Perth side without scoring is simply not on.

The frustration levels after this latest Hampden horror were through the roof and I can half understand brassed off-Hibees calling for Jack Ross ’ head on online polls after a third defeat at the national stadium in seven months.

But I certainly don’t agree with firing flak at Jack.

Why? Because this flop lies firmly at the door of the players. As soon as St Johnstone scored you could see the air going out of the Hibs players wondering ‘what we going to do now?’

They panicked and just started launching high balls up to Christian Doidge. The Saints defenders lap that up. That’s when you need guys like Martin Boyle to take the ball, be brave and get wide.

He has been outstanding this season but he was lifeless at Hampden.

The three guys you needed to turn up - Boyle, Kevin Nisbet and Doidge with over over 40 goals between them - never kicked a ball.

Only one man who started the game in a Hibs shirt can look himself in the mirror after that - the goalkeeper, Matt Macey.

That’s why Hibs lost. Simple.

Jack has taken a lot of abuse from the fans.

But the only thing I would question him about was playing Ryan Porteous ahead of Darren McGregor.

Porteous looked like a weak link that had been targeted by Chris Kane.

I thought McGregor’s experience and physicality would have been better suited - especially after his performances against Aberdeen and Celtic recently.

But that’s it as far as the manager goes.

The rest of the team he selected is what I think every Hibs fan would pick and there’s very little else he could have done.

He was positive, played 4/4/2, and was brave enough to take off Alex Gogic and bring on Jamie Murphy for an injection in the second half.

Bravery doesn’t describe the performance of his big game players though.

And they will have major regrets.

Third place is a brilliant season but what an opportunity to go and get their hands on the Scottish Cup they’ve allowed to slip away.

I remember the 2004 League Cup Final defeat against Livingston all too vividly. We knew we should have done better and that the occasion got to us.

It’s sickening. That feeling of regret never leaves you. Ever. It still turns my stomach thinking about the medal that got away.

That’s what this group of players will be taking into their summer. They were like rabbits caught in the headlights.

But Jack Ross doesn’t deserve that.

He’s a great manager and he’s had a very good season. Finishing third is a big achievement - it’s the first time in 16 years..

I don’t pay attention to online polls and I don’t think Jack will either.

When the dust settles fans will look at it and realise it’s been a good season. Third place, a semi final and a final.

It’s there to be built on again next season and Jack is the man to do it.

Whether all his top players are still in place is another question.

Bids will come in for Josh Doig, Porteous and Nisbet, especially if the latter shows up well in the Euros with Scotland.

One thing’s for sure though - not one of them did themselves any favours on the big stage on Saturday.

That's very teary and snottery indeed.  Neilson got fat more out of his players in 75 minutes against Celtic, not St Johnstone, than Ross did.  That's a manager's job.

Glad he's still hurting about Livvy.  And what about their Hampden record against us?

Poor soul.

Nice of Tam Anus to remind us that he played his part in the comedy show against Livvy. That has been surpassed by a plethora of H1B5ings but that remains my favourite cup final H1B5ing. They were convinced all they had to do was turn up and collect their winners medals.

I love how these cretins always make out the " big" team failed rather than the "wee" team did better. In this case with prior games into account StJ beat them fair and square, and they had the better of Ross on ( was it ) three previous games where Hibs failed to score.

Had this been a one off game then ok playing badly is a big factor, BUT StJ have shown Hibs up all season and well deserved the win.

He forgets its the manager's job to motivate his players and to get the best out of them.

They are all equally at fault in fact if these players who are so highly rated can't get themselves up for a cup final are they really worth the hype ? 🤔

Last month he was creaming himself that Hibs were best placed to stop Rangers doing the double.

Oops.

In 2004 Hibs knocked out Celtic in the quarter final and Rangers in the semi. As others have pointed out they fully expected to beat Livingston but similar to Saint J this season, Livingston had a very good record versus Hibs that year, winning 3 of the 4 league fixtures between the sides.

The only thing he said that was wrong was Ross is a great manager.  Hibs players didnt shit the bed they just lacked the professionalism and mentality to win the final. That’s going through the highlights and match report mind you.

This will be typical of how crushed they are at not managing to win either of this season's trophies. They know that both were gifted opportunities that don't generally come around once in a season, let alone twice.

No old firm in either semi final draw.

Being given the opportunity to win the cup without having had to eliminate Rangers, Celtic, Hearts or Aberdeen first.

St Johnstone having had a Covid outbreak which would have disrupted their training and preparation.

The cup was being tossed at them and they dropped it. The wonder of them winning the cup twice in 5 years bursting like a big balloon.

Dropping into a minor European competition by allowing St Johnstone to leapfrog them into the Europa League, taking the reward of their 3rd place finish in a league of average standard away from them.

Previously, although it was last season's cup, they helped manipulate a situation where their semi final opponents were demoted by a corrupt vote, not allowed to train until after Hibs season had started, not allowed to play a competitive match until October. All of which were detrimental to that opponent's ability to sign enough good players to be available to play against them at Hampden. They still lost, again, to Hearts at Hampden.

I sincerely hope they are hurting badly for some time because the season just finished has been a disaster for them. Nobody will remember this Hibs team for anything other than losing 3 cup games at Hampden in the same season.

The boy is an utter liability and very poor defender, yet gets talked up about how good he is.

Yep. The chance to win both cups without playing Celtic, Rangers, Aberdeen or Hearts is a one off opportunity and they blew it.

Players and manager are to blame. Lovely.

The Apprentice

McManus is a complete irrelevance. Surely someone with the derby record, and indeed level of career he had at Hibs would be doing their best to stay out of the limelight.

The highlight of this career was a derby goal in arguably the biggest 'Hibsing' of them all

Is there anything worse than a weegie Hibee, absolutely awful player and showed his lack of understanding of coaching in this laughable defence of another weegie.
If he doesn’t think Hibs play long balls on a regular basis he’s not been paying attention.

Say What Again

Repeating what others have touched on above, I watched the game with two Hibbys on Saturday.

Both agreed - before kick off - that they'd have liked to see McGregor in the side over "Porto".

Then as they day went on discussed how they'd take £2m for Porteous.

The same guy they'd have dropped for 36 year old McGregor.

Wait. So Porteous weak link and shouldn't have played... Few paragraphs sookin Slack Joss' taw.... If the bids come for Porteous.

Honestly all you have to do is bew youngish and get more than 5 games for Hibs and no matter the evidence, you're worthsquillions!!

My assessment of Hibs is that they play in a very rigid way.

Now you can fault the players but I'd say the system is at fault too.

And specifically he's picked Josh Doig and Paul McGinn who on their own gifted St Johnstone their winning chances. These players are just not good enough.

Then the fact Martin Boyle wasn't in the game.

I could do a more detailed analysis but it was pretty plain they had no structure, energy or variation to hurt St Johnstone.

80% the fault of Jack Ross.

Oh my. Is that true, that the St J victory pumped them out of the euro Cup and they are now in the European evostick Cup or whatever its called. The Johnstons Paint Cup of Europe? Oh I didn't think it could get any better. But the benefit of that historical 3rd placed finish being ripped from them is like a little cherry on top of the hibsedit shaped disaster they just pulled off yet again.

I seriously would miss them as rivals if they folded.

It's just a matter of time until their media pals start bumming them as being trailblazers by being in this Conference, which is just the latest version of the Inter Toto Cup. Sure it's a European competition which will catch a few of the top clubs who have tumbled down their domestic league, but many of those clubs will use it to give youth players experience of playing abroad.

It's just more crumbs from UEFA to keep the minnions happy and let the big boys keep making the real money.

This has made my day. They even hibsedit when they got 3rd place and didn't get into the still quite respectable one that's below the champions league.

100%.  Even in to injury time, they were still just hitting long balls somewhere near Doidge, hoping he'd win a flick or something.  The St J defence lapped it up.  The only little spark came from Murphy when he came on but that dissipated soon too.  There was one moment where Murphy occupied the St J RB and Doig got down the outside and play a shite cross.  But it was a moment.  They didn't even look to try it again.

It isn't easy to break down a solid 541, but they only did what St J wanted them to.  Davidson pissed all over Jack.  As he has all season.

Not seen a lot of non-Hearts football, but Hibs appear to me that if Boyle's weekly dive doesn't win them a penalty, they've nowt else in the locker?  Otherwise it's more or less long balls and Doidge barges some chances out for them.
