Non-Exec directors offer a bit of of an outside view on things but are also there to challenge Board decisions.

Maybe he might have asked some tough questions around which contractors are being appointed and why?  Who’s responsible for ordering seats (well, not quite that deep, but possibly, if there clarity of management responsibilities)?  Questions other Board directors might not have been prepared to ask.
This might have prevented some of the issues that arose where the Chairperson appeared to be making decisions unchallenged.
I recon, he would be pretty forthright in this role.

I know. But there will be a way of him being able to offer opinions and stipulations without being tied to endless meetings.

If I was chucking money at Hearts I would want some official input, to say the least.

Me too but JA is a philanthropist and we obviously aren't.

Would this new role not suggest something different from philanthropy? More an investment and oversight role?

I don’t know. Do philanthropists usually join the board?

You need to see the bigger picture,he won't have to attend board meetings,he  has a free hand,he can still and will influence the other directors and chair. The man is a very experienced business man, that NOBODY at the club can match,he is  a win win win for HEARTS.
