Very surprised at Price making squad, but good to see our representation is up, and deservedly so.

Feel Jamie R very unlucky to miss out, along with other back rowers.

Dan Biggar, Taighd Furlong and M Vinnupola would be nowhere near my squad, but choices made so there you go.

Okay, spelling his name, without checking it, probably mistake. Taghd Furlong then.

Nope. Not because of that. He's one of the best props on the planet.

Bump.

Announcement at mid-day tomorrow, 6th.

Quick 5Live discussion just now.

They fully expect Manu Tualagni (sp) to go.

Simmons and Care under serious consideration.

Sexton could be test starter or may not go.

Hogg, Watson shoe ins, Van der Merve and Zander or was it Matt?) Fagerson very close.  Certainly won't be 8 or 9 Scots.

AWJ will be tour captain but not guaranteed to start tests.

Well, not quite 9 but will take 8

We can agree to disagree. Don't think he will cope with conditions and will be pinged non stop by refs.

And let's hope they only use surnames going forward.

You can disagree all you want Furlongs probably the best tight head prop on planet earth.

Agreed on VInupola. As I wrote, I'd have put Healy in his place.

I'm joining Cruyff in surprise at your omission of Furlong. He's been the best tighthead in the 6N for a while now and the Lions will need a beast against the Saffer front row. Who would you replace him with?

I'm happy with Dan Biggar as the selection at fly half is quite sparse. As soon as you've ruled out Farrell, you're left with Sexton and his eggshell head; George Ford (does he do place kicks?); Finn and Biggar before dipping into a pool of relatively untried #10s - Hastings, Burns, the other Welsh bloke. Couple of mates down here who are Quins fans were shouting for their guy Smith (?). Biggar won't ever set the heather alight but with the same logic for taking Price, his selection makes sense to me.

Out of that squad, now we know who's selected, name your First Test 23.

1. Jones

2. Owens

3. Furlong

4. AW-J

5. Itoje

6. Beirne

7. Watson

8. Faletau

9. Murray

10. Russell

11. Adams

12. Henshaw

13. Harris

14. VdM

15. Hogg

16. LC-D

17. Sutherland

18. Fagerson

19. Lawes (or Tipsy)

20. Simmonds

21. Davies

22. Biggar

23. Daly

(If I was being utterly pragmatic and given that squad, I'd probably put Farrell on the bench rather than Biggar - cover for fly or centre depending how things pan out; with Daly covering centre or back 3).

Spellczech

Good squad as far as Scottish representation goes, and it could be exciting to watch if Gatland does indeed feed the backs and not just try to do an 8-man game...

I can see problems at the half-back positions though. If Gatland wants to play expansive rugby then it will be Murray at 9 & Russell at 10 and they will be targeted by the Boks. If Russell gets an injury then Biggar can replace him, but if he also gets clattered then it is back to the somewhat indestructible, but not at all expansive Farrell by the time the tests come around...Similarly if Murray gets injured, there isn't much back-up there...

I guess none of us can tell if Gatland will get a tune out of the English contingent where Jones couldn't, and that is the key...

2 hookers on your bench? ;) And I believe you're allowed a 23rd, aren't you?

I think your starting XV is probably closer to Gatland's than mine. But I was answering the question you set - what would be my squad (hence no Farrell - he'd be on a tour of Robben Island).

Delighted with Van Der MacMerwe being picked. If played he might line up against his brother which would be amazing.

To set the cat amongst the pigeons, what do we reckon the crowd will be for the Japan game?

I'll say 22k and much gnashing of teeth as Hampden still only 12k.

Jason Leith at Murrayfield withartan rug uttering words 'cos Mike Mulraney is a bell end under his breath.

Probably a tad early.

Strong team.

Curry at 6 might be a better shout than Beirne (my call) as Gatland appears to have gone for size rather than pace at centre and having a bit of pace round the fringe of the scrum could be useful to keep deKlerk quiet.

Mind you, I agree with someone who wrote that the Lions should concentrate on their own game rather than setting out to nullify the Bokke. Let them worry about us rather than the other way round. I'm glad I'm not picking!!

Doubtful there will be any fans at the games due to sharp rise in cases in SA.

Yep.

Lions staff are preparing on a 'no fans' basis.

As a PS, Ringrose scudded himself last night putting in a massive hit.  It was deemed legally but Ian Henderson questioned how such a huge hit could be so.

If as predicted there are no fans in attendance in South Africa. Then maybe it would have been better to play this game behind closed doors, as good preparation?

Players have been playing behind closed doors for over a year.

I think they already know what it's like.

It will be good for morale getting a good send off.

12500/52000 = 24%

16500/67500 = 24%

Although I think Hampden capacity is slightly lower.

SG pretty consistent in what is being allowed in.

Looks good for at least 25% in grounds next season, if your ground can meet criteria.

(Maybe better for The Terrace, so as not to derail this thread)

Perhaps, but they haven't played as a Lions team behind closed doors.

  • 1 month later...

I was expecting there to be a few Scots starting on Saturday or in the matchday squad, just with it being at Murrayfield. Of the 4 starting, I think Watson has the best shot of starting the first Test, but will be interesting to see if VDM can improve his defence, as that could be the difference between him making a Test squad or just being a mid-week player.

Stuart Hogg, Chris Harris, Finn Russell are still with their clubs.

Yeah, I was just talking about the 4 starting on Saturday. Hogg will be favourite to start the 1st test at fullback, but I don't think Sutherland, Fagerson or VDM will be seen as favourites at their positions.

I don't think it would be likely. I know there are honorable exceptions, Hogg, Hastings and Irvine off the top of my head, but I always feel that full back is the worst position to have your captain.

I thought that. He must have been only a Bawhair off being in the squad. Beirne was great at 6 (as expected) so, although he covers lock, I'd be looking for a lock to replace AWJ, rather than a 6 and pushing Beirne forward.

If Tipuric is looking dodgy, does this bring M'bozza Ritchie to the front of the queue or is he one of the 8 Scots Covid isolating?
