Do you want them to sign anyone just for the sake of it? Do you want them paying over the odds just for the sake of signing someone? After the last few seasons we’ve all seen how that works. I’d rather they sign no new players if all it does is lead to more “wage thief” and “$#!te” game day threads.

Dont think I could handle another season of that on here.

This is what we did in the past. Hopefully those days are well behind us. I would rather play some of the young guys than just sign someone for the sake of it.

Have to agree here

go onto transfermarkt and the list of free agents is staggering. Some top quality players too. wages would be a stumbler but a free agent, 28,29 years on the way out would likely take a cut. Or Anne just coughs up extra for the wages

There's literally hundreds. I've filtered this down to ages 23-30 and guys around the market value of our top players, but this is the sort of calibre I would expect us to be aiming for in a first team player:

Pinning all of my hopes on this "playing at the top level" rumour, here are some possibilities:

- Josh Sims (Winger): Never quite cut it at Southampton despite some early promise. Wasn't on massive money, maybe £15k p/w. (Possible connection to our new guy?). Would put him in the same sort of bracket ability-wise at this Mueller lad. Wages should be in our ball park.

- Max Meyer (Attacking Mid/Winger): Was at Crystal Palace the first half of last season, they let him go to FC Koln where he didn't do too well, and they've released him. Ability levels as above. Wages should be affordable.

- Conor Wickham (Striker): Another Palace release-ee. Probably slightly better than Boyce. Wages again though around £15-20k...

- Muhamad Besic (Playmaker CM/DM): Always a bit strange he was at Everton for me. Never an EPL player but would suit us nicely. Will have been on decent money at Everton though (possible connection to SN?) - would love to get him as he's one of those skilful midfielders with a bit of flair.

- Kyle Edwards (Attacking Mid): Released by West Brom. Quick wee lad, good dribbler, quick feet. Reading apparently interested.

- James McCarty (CM/DM): Well al know him. Connections to JS and SN through Hamilton and Everton.

- Marco Stierpermann (Attacking Mid): Released by Norwich and apparently on very low wages by PL standards - rumoured to be on as little as £10k p/w.

- Henri Saivet (CM): Left Newcastle last month. 30 y/o now but had loads of promise early on. Would be good for us I think. Wages with Newcaslte about £25k though.

- Jerome Sinclair (Striker): Watford thought they had a real coup on their hands when they snapped him up from Liverpool a few years ago as "the next Michael Owen"... Various loans later they've released him aged 24. Might be a shout for us with his pace.

*Disclaimer before anyone starts* again, I'm not saying we are in any way going to sign any of these boys, just showing some examples of what's out there.

I’m seriously concerned about this season. Our team wasn’t good enough last season and an academy player from down south is not enough.

I’m not making excuses. I’m being selfish. I dont want to read post after post on game threads from negative “I just don’t believe it” fans like you. Why wouldn’t you want them signing the right player for the right money, rather than the wrong player for crazy money?

If Hearts offer the right player 4000 a week and he insists on 5000 are Hearts in the wrong to say BOLT?

Right now with “fans” like you Hearts are on a hiding to nothing. They can’t win for losing.

Can you show me where i said I didn’t want the club to sign the best players for the right money?
Savage himself said last week if a player doesn’t accept our offer we move onto the next one so your completely wrong with your analogy.
Fans like me, thar pump thousands in every year that demand the best from every aspect of the club? Or folk that accept any old crap that saw us back in the championship under this failed regime?

A handful 🙈, hundreds I would say. Go and have a look at transfer market and see.

Depends entirely on what quality we want and what we can afford though surely? Two unknowns.

If we'd wanted someone like Andros Townsend and had £4k per week to spend on wages, there certainly wouldn't be hundreds. There probably wouldn't be any.

Am I the only one happy we aren’t signing anyone?  I don’t want us bringing anyone in whilst Neilson has a say in it.

This season for me is get rid of a lot of the dross, hopefully finish about 9/10th, get rid of neilson and the rest of the dross.  Then move forward with a new manager and some signings next season.

No point bringing in yet another raft of shite players on big deals that our new manager will be lumbered with.

Playing the 3-4-3 a striker really isn’t a priority now. Boyce plays, Nando for backup and Henderson pushing for game time. A centre back and a real player of quality in centre mid would be nice …

Yeah they are definitely more pressing. Maybe even another winger given Ginnellys injury troubles.

I don't doubt things are going on in the background, I was just hoping we would be looking more like the finished article by this point.

We only sign the right players for the right money is generally what clubs say when they’re getting nowhere in the market.

A season lasts 38 games and a 2 year contract 60+ appearances so one game against Celtic, IN CONTEXT,  is not worth hurriedly making mistakes AGAIN.

The thing is, anyone in League One would most likely be interested in those calibre of players too. And unfortunately, most League One clubs have more money than we do.

I think we need to lower our expectations of players who were earning 5 figure weekly wages unless it's on loan.

I’m sort of hoping we sign some decent players through Savage and whenever Robbie leaves the new guy will inherit some decent players. Whoever replaces him will be backed in the transfer market anyway.

There'll be protests and even less fans will renew next season if we don't compete this year. Eventually the only thing we'll be consolidating is safety in the SPL, that'll be our level if more of the same abject failure we've seen for 5 or so seasons continues this year.

More than likely true but protests over a top 6 finish won’t be enough to get Neilson punted and neither will a drop in season tickets. Failing to achieve top 6 is the only thing that will see Neilson lose his job.
He kept his job after Brora due to achieving what was expected in the league. It’ll be the same this season.

We are the third biggest club in the country but our level is anywhere between 3rd and 7th. That’s certainly the average placings we have finished in my 30 years of supporting the club, including going down twice.
I’ll certainly not be demanding we do better than 6th this season but your correct that a lot of fans will demand 3rd.

What maximum weekly wage do you think Hearts pay?

Can you show me where i said I didn’t want the club to sign the best players for the right money?
Savage himself said last week if a player doesn’t accept our offer we move onto the next one so your completely wrong with your analogy.
Fans like me, thar pump thousands in every year that demand the best from every aspect of the club? Or folk that accept any old crap that saw us back in the championship under this failed regime?

How is my analogy wrong? My analogy was Savage offering X, player wants XX. Player told to bolt. We move on.

Agree. I am trying to be patient but I want us to have the best possible chance of getting off to a good start next Saturday.

For me, we need a better centre back in there next to Souttar, a better central midfield player and a decent striker (even if just to bring off the bench). We probably need another centre back too tbh.

Even if that happens in the next 9 days its not ideal prep time. That's kind of the point I was trying to make in previous post.

Exactly, Celtic are there for the taking.
We are only playing three at the back because “It suits the players we have”, no partner for Souttar who we have to hope plays a full season.

We are a bit light on decent options off the bench also.

Blah blah blah, more excuses, they’ve had months to organise signings, look at January for example where GMS was signed right away.

Everyone else is signing players.
Savage said we wouldn’t wait on players and would move onto the next one, but apparently we have had two on hold for some reason for weeks.
What I want them to do is their ****ing job and get players in that are ready to  go by the difficult start to the season, if we don’t we will be looking for a manager in September.

Depends entirely on what quality we want and what we can afford though surely? Two unknowns.

If we'd wanted someone like Andros Townsend and had £4k per week to spend on wages, there certainly wouldn't be hundreds. There probably wouldn't be any.

If they are trying to get guys we can’t afford then that’s just crazy when there’s plenty of players we can pay a decent wage to who would improve us.

I’m seriously concerned about this season. Our team wasn’t good enough last season and an academy player from down south is not enough.

Agreed, a few bog standard wins against lowly opposition seems to have wiped folks memories of some of last seasons struggles.

I don’t think any of us thought we’d be starting this season’s league campaign against Celtic with the same squad we had last season apart from Cochrane on loan.

Who have you identified as top targets from this list of ‘hundreds’ ?

My contributions help pay the £500k salaries of all those involved in sourcing new players for the club we own, it’s not my job to do that.

Alternatively, the change to 3-4-3 and the return of Souttar, have negated a lot of the issues experienced last season …

Take your point.

But, as a few of his supporters often suggest, Neilson's going nowhere.

That being the case I'd rather we strengthened with him in charge rather than not at all.

Not my way forward, but the stark reality, I'm afraid.

2 year deals max, though, would, at least, make a mess easier to clean after the axe inevitably falls.

We still haven't cleaned up the hoarded squalor Levien left behind and he was away before Covid 19 was ever mentioned.

BackOfTheNet

On one hand I am concerned, as I don’t want last season’s squad (which is in effect still is) trying to compete in a league above. Also, teams that finished high up the league last season have either kept their squad intact or have added to it, like Hibs, Aberdeen, St. Johnstone or Livingston.

On the other hand watching Motherwell last night against Airdrie, we should have enough to get by some of the dross near the bottom. But we don’t want a mid table finish and I suppose those of us desperate to see signings is because we want top half not to even be a question and to immediately compete for the best of the rest at least.

That can’t be ascertained until we play a decent side, he can’t cover for every Halkett mistake.

It’ll cut the mustard for budge and Neilson. Top 6 is the aim. Fans demanding more and expecting to compete for 3rd won’t bother the club.

Only way Neilson gets the sack in my opinion is if we look like we are struggling to make top 6. Other than that he’s on easy street.

Yup. The club has already shown, certainly during the pandemic they don’t really listen to the grumbling.

Different when Tyney is full but who knows when that’s gonna be?

I’d expect top 6 will be enough for those in charge regardless of performance/style

Honestly not a clue mate but considering our average wage is north of £100k p/a I would say at a wild guess that for the right first team calibre player we could probably do around £4-6k p/w, which is likely what we'll be paying or will have paid to the likes of Gordon, Naismith, Berra, Boyce, Damour. Halliday, GMS, Gino, Walker etc won't be miles behind.

We’ve gone from losing to Alloa and Brora Rangers to winning game after game without conceding a single goal. A clear improvement.

A new centre back is essential but I’d rather we get it right than rush in and end up with a poor signing.

That’s not all down to Souttar though, we were awful in Greenock.
As I’ve said there’s been months to find a player, no rush was required.
