Old style ring pulls.

 

If you serrated the ring from the pull you could then use the pull to fire the ring like a frisbee.

I can't remember jokes on them either, they must have appeared later.  There used to be arguments in our house as to who got the blue penguin, you only ever got one of those in a pack.

you still get them, just that they are now made by walkers not smiths
